cut up hot dogs...cheerios..even mac and cheese..anything that he can pick up...don't baby him though lay it out there and walk away..he'll eat..he just wants you to put it in his mouth for him..lay it out and walk away..I guarantee he may be a bit pissy for a few but he'll get it..and then he will get mad if you try to feed him

Hi,

Food transitions with kids take time, please try giving him only 1-2 new things each week, if he does not like it that week, give it to him 2 weeks later again. It takes a number of repeated tries before they enjoy something since their taste buds are still developing. Also increase the gap between his meal times, he will eat better when he's hungry.

Is he stilling up in the high chair? If yes, serve food on the tray itself and let him explore his food with his fingers. Plate/fork/spoon throwing is a game he enjoys probably, along with your reaction. Its OK if he makes a mess while eating.

Sometimes kids appetite changes as well, and they eat more during growth spurs and less otherwise.

Children will not starve themselves.
A mom asked this same question last night, you should look at her responses also.. here was my suggestion.

Make a healthy meal each time and a sippy cup of milk. Make his portions very small. 4 peas, 1 tablespoon mashed potatoes. chicken pieces ,2 (cooked) baby carrots a cherry tomato If he eats all of something give him a little more. If he doesn't eat anything, that is fine, but no snacks. Use small plates and small utensils. This will help not to overwhelm him.

Do not make a big deal about his eating. Almost ignore it, but make sure he does not throw food on the floor. Take away the plate if he does not want to eat.

I agree w/ Laurie A -

Give him VERY small amounts and VERY healthy - they will eat when they are ready.

Also - 1 is still young so yes - if you've moved from baby food straight to more solid w/ out bringing him thru the various stages of letting them feel/adapt to a more solid feeling of the food in their mouth they may reject it. I would start by cooking the food to just above mushy and as he accepts that then slowly make it more solid. Also make sure it is easy to pick up.

Re: a baby not starving themselves - that is true. I've also read that if given the chance they will self regulate and that a parents should not look at what they eat each DAY but rather each WEEK as an indicator as to if they are getting a balanced diet. Good luck!!

We are going through the same thing with my 17 month - old. I am thinking it is a stage. My son eats ramen noodles and chicken noodle soup really good. We also brown sausage and scramble an egg and he eats that well. Hang in there!

You may be giving him foods that are not mushy enough. Also I not sure if the stomach acids can handle that kind of food at this age and his stomach might actually hurt. You can find out by calling a pedicatric GI docs office and ask for any information they can give you.its not going to hurt him if you help for a little longer just start getting the different stages of foods. Also fine motor skills to pick up things can be tough unless it s really easy to pick up like cheerios. Good luck.

How did you transition from baby food to finger food? Did you go more and more chunky until he got chunks of that? 1 is still pretty young, and he may just not be ready for finger foods. Will he still eat the baby food?

frozen peas. Sometimes the cold is just interesting enough. Popsicles made from home-made smoothies of yogurt and banana and wheat germ.
