ELF has great nail polish that is free of Toluene, Formaldehyde, and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP). These chemicals are not good for anyone, pregnant or not. You can find them at eyeslipsface.com, they are only $1.00!
My mom told me that pregnant women should not use nail polish because it has chemicals in it that's bad for the baby in utero. Is there any truth in it?

You can paint your nails as much as you want, that's what my OB said. Nail polish has probably changed a lot in composition since your mom was having babies, so she's not necessarily wrong, just that it's no longer true. Have your OB clarify, and take your mom with if she's giving you a hard time!
There are many polishes on the market now that do not contain formaldehyde or toulene. In fact, even Sally Hansen has several now, which you can usually find at any drugstore or Target. However according to the Cosmetics Database they still have Developmental/Reproductive toxicity.
You could check the database for options, there are a few that don't have that toxicity, though they may be hard to find. Or as an alternative, consider having your nails buffed instead of polished. I do it and it almost looks like you have a french manicure!
Hello, I have never heard of such a thing. Sometimes we "Grandmas" tend to believe things our mothers told us. However, I will be curious to see what the rest of the answers say.
Good luck with your precious baby.

Actually there is some new research out saying the chemicals in nail polish do go to the baby. The reality of the situation is anything you put on your skin (makeup, hair dye, lotions etc) gets absorbed and goes to the baby. The amount that actually gets there, however, is small. I don't think it's anything to worry too much about but if you want you can always opt for a phthalate free nailpolish. I know they sell them at whole foods.
Not true. As long as you don't drink it, you will be fine.
As long as you don't swallow the nail polish, you're all good! Enjoy that mani/pedi!

I hadn't heard of that but I know that Whole Foods sells a line of nail polish that is fermaldahide (sp) free. Maybe just have the buff and polish for the pregnancy and then get a pedicure right before the baby is due. I got pedicure the day before my son was born and believe it or not got joy from looking at my pretty toes during labor!!
Good luck!
I really hope not!!!
I did my toes while pregnant- My daughter is okay.
There's actually a lot of diff-things ppl will tell you is not good like wearing make up, wearing a necklace etc
Best whishes to you

Nail polish is definitely bad for you. It contains formaldehyde and tuolene which are known toxins. Nail polish remover is worse than nail polish.
The best option would be to get a "buff and shine" at the local nail salon. This allows you to get all the pampering without the chemicals and it looks fantastic.
Another option is to get nail polish without these chemicals. A great company with an awesome variety of colors is the No Miss Nailpolish. Here is their website: www.nomiss.com/nailpolish.html You can bring your own nail polish remover, polish, and lotions to your nail salon and have them use that exclusively. I have done this for years, and it did take some work to get them to work with me on it, but they are slowly getting educated because of my firmness on the subject.
Yes, that is absolutely the truth. I worked in the nail industry for many, many years and my company did a lot of research on the subject. As a matter of fact, some nail polishes actually come with a warning label that they contain chemicals that are known to cause cancer. I personally did not polish while pregnant. The chemicals are also bad for you.....not just the baby.
Here's a link to an article on the subject: http://www.naturalnews.com/020031.html
I don't think so. I painted my nails all the time with all four of my pregnancies and all my kids are just fine. If you want to paint your nails, then do it. It's not going to hurt your baby.
