My husband is going to Afghanistand for a year and I am in need of a Nanny for my 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter in my Gilbert home. This person also needs to be someone who has flexible work hours because my job is not an 8-5 job. Does anyone have any idea on how I go about this venture?

Working Mother of 2 beautiful children and married for 9 years.

I found two great sitters at www.ptofamily.com - You put in a profile of the type of person you need, typical hours, location, etc. and you will receive a bunch of profiles to review. They do the background check, and have other services as well. Good luck!

J.,

Another alternative may be a live in au pair. They can work up to 45 hours a week and since they live with you can be flexible on hours each week. That way you have someone committed to help you the whole year your husband is away. They can be responsible for everything kid related from laundry, cooking to taking them to school. When my daughter was an infant I had an au pair from New Zealand. I consider it one of the best decisions that I made for her. We still keep in touch and plan to visit when my daughter (in my mind) can handle a 15 hour flight. The cost was about $14,000 for the year. High for one child, but becomes reasonable for families that have more 2 or more in day care.

May your year move swiftly and your husband return safely.

The nanny exchange will help you find a nanny for a fee. I worked for them when I lived in Gilbert. Also care.com has LOTS of people looking for nanny jobs. I found a family to nanny for this way also. You can also post on craigslist but you never know what you are going to get. Good luck!

Sittercity.com is a reputable nanny-finding service. The DoD pays for active duty military to sign up for the service for free, so you wouldn't even have to pay. Here's more info: www.sittercity.com/dod. Good luck with your husband's upcoming deployment!

i've used sitter city and got an excellent nanny for my kids. i don't need one now but it worked for me at the time. also, i know you can find an overseas nanny from a reputable agency for far less than $14,000 a year and it is a great deal! I looked into doing this at one point and though pricey, it was a lot less than daycare and you got someone to help you with cooking and cleaning, too. And, the exposure to a person from another country is wonderful for children.

Hi J., I just googled "nanny gilbert az" and a bunch of nanny websites popped up.

Also put word out to friends and family. They may know of someone who would be able to do that for you.

Good luck and special thanks to your hubby for what he does! :o)
