Naps...morning Or Afternoon

I have a 17 month old little boy. Always been a great sleeper (10-12 hours at night) 2 two hour naps each day). Over the past 2-3 weeks he has really struggled with naps; he is VERY tired within 2 hours of getting up in the am, so he goes down for his morning nap and sleeps for about 2 hours. In the afternoon, he gets tired and I put him down for a nap (it takes a little more work to get him down in the afternoon, using the same routine) and he is up after an hour, but still sleepy. Sometimes he will go back to sleep for another 45 min to hour, then up again. This leads to him getting tired and grumpy earlier in the evening and to an earlier bed time. I have tried cutting his a.m. nap down, but he still does the same thing for the p.m. nap. Any suggestions??? Is he just a kid who needs a longer a.m. nap and shorter p.m. nap and earlier bedtime?????

When my girls got to this point I started keeping them up a little longer in the morning and moved to 1 longer nap. If they were used to going down for a nap at 10:30 for example, we'd head to the park at 10:15, stay busy for a while and nap when we got home. If you stretch it by 10 or 15 minutes each day you should get to the point where he makes it till lunch time, eats, and then goes down for 1 longer nap for the day. Good luck!

If he were in daycare. the schedule would be

arrive at school, play outside for 1 hour or hour and a half, inside activity, some more play inside , 11:15 clean up, lunch at 11:30.
Prepare for nap at 12:00, in darkened room story time.. kids sleep till 1:45 or 2:00..

Get up, have snack, play outside for most of afternoon.

We tried to start bath time at home at about 7:30 so our daughter would be in bed by 8:15. Many families with early morning wake up, try to have their young children in bed by 7:30.. It does not get dark here in Austin till late, so our schedules are a little later..

I don't know about you but I sure miss that dependable second nap :-)
I have a 15 mos old, her rountine is up at 7:30 plus or minus some, nap at 10:00am, up at 12:00, if I am lucky she goes back down around 4:00. The 4:00 nap is only taken now if she is cranky and extra tired. My little girl goes to bed at 7:00pm, unfortunately she wakes up about twice a night, not fun for mommy at all. I have tried having her go to bed later, not taking her afternoon nap and nothing I do can get her to sleep through the night. I am really thinking of letting her cry it out by herself starting Monday. It seems like this nap thing is normal since when I talk to my mommy friends they all say the same thing. Good Luck :-)

Sounds like he's ready to move to only one nap. How late is he going to sleep at night? Try pushing the bedtime back by a half hour at a time and see how he does in the morning. You could also try to do a relaxing activity in the morning instead of putting him down for a nap, and trying to put him down shortly after lunch in the afternoon. I've always found that keeping the afternoon nap works better in the long run, but that was just my kids.

The trick is to make smaller adjustments, a little at a time, to make the transition easier. With any luck, within a couple of weeks, he'll be napping better only in the afternoon.

My experience with my 22 month old was that around this time 15-17 ish months, we did another sleep adjustment. Mine is one who really needs sleep, but isn't always a good sleeper. He used to wake up later, take a morning nap and a pm nap, both only about 45 minutes and go to bed around 9ish.

Over the past several months, we've adjusted to his needs for more sleep and are always adjusting when there's a cold or teething or a growth spurt because that causes a need for more rest too.

Now we get up early like 6-7am, he goes down between 11-12 for a nap and now usually sleeps 2-3 hrs at that time and no afternoon nap. But is more than ready for bed by 8pm every night.

Just experiment and adjust to what seems to work best for him. It might take a while to get a new schedule to stick

try not to put down after 2 hours of being up.. keep him occupied for 3 hours.. then put him down.. this may help... usually around 13 months or so.. they go a little longer and cut down to one big long nap around 12... so good luck.

My son (same age) is very unpredictable with naps as well. I think it just depends on the days activities... growth spurts... etc. My rule is... if he's tired, let him sleep! Sometimes it seems like he sleeps too much, but I figure... he's a growing boy and if he's tired, why not let him sleep? Perhaps instead of 2 naps.. try 1 long nap? My son takes 1 three hour nap in the middle of the day usually. He still sleeps a good 12 hours at night. You wrote it was only recently that his naps are different.. he's probably just going through a growth spurt and it disrupts his usual schedule. Hopefully you can get him back on schedule. Good Luck!

Maybe if you dont let him take 2 naps during the day, keep him busy doing things he like, take him for a walk or something he's gonna stay awake for! Give him a lil bit of chocolate milk, that might help him stay up so that way he can go to bed at night and sleep his normal hours or maybe not the whole 10 hrs!! & then take 1 nap during the day or 2 but not that long!

I have a 16 month old son, and he doesnt go to bed till like 11pm or later!!! We have tried many things to make him go to bed early but he puts up a fight and wont do it, he can be with the lights off and still be playing with toys! lol In the mornings he wakes up between 9-10am which is gd for me because it gives me time to clean up and get breakfast ready for the both of us! He takes 1 nap during the day around 5-6 for bout an hour sometimes less, sometimes more! and he wakes up all happy because he knows after he wakes up we usually go outside an play or go to the park, so he looks forward to it!!! Hope i helped & gd luck!

My 16 month old has been going through weird nap shifts over the last month or so. I think there must be something about this age. She used to also do 2 naps, but has transitioned now to one almost hour nap in the middle of the day. HOWEVER, if we are on a relaxing car ride mid morning she will conk out and either be tired in the evening or take a second nap that gets pretty close to bedtime. May I ask when he wakes up in the morning? When is bedtime? If my little one happens to be real moody in the morning, I work to get that early morning nap in, but about 70% of the time she now just does the single midday nap. I agree with the other posters regarding adjusting his naptime by adjusting what his activity is around that morning time. We often have a midmorning snack then play outside and this keeps her going until midday... Good luck!
