Then take him off the drugs. Kids are overmedicated these days. Try another school that has a better approach to kids that don't fit in the box.

I've worked with kids who were on meds for ADD, ADHD and other problems. In my experience, I believe most of the meds were over prescribed. There are some children, of course, who probably really need the drugs, but most of the ones I worked with seemed like they were much better off not taking meds.
Have you tried dietary changes to see what will happen with good nutrition? Also try just finding things you can do with him at home... activities that will help him develop his attention span. Even just talking honestly with him about his needs in that area and getting him on board with trying to help himself might work.

One thing I noticed when dealing with the kids who were on meds is that the meds seemed then to become a 'crutch'. I recall one little boy whose mom was - like I am - not good at remembering to give the dosage when he was supposed to have it. He would come to childcare and tell us he couldn't behave because his mom had forgotten to give him his pill that morning. We began trying to work with him on the idea that he was responsible for his actions whether he had taken his pill or not, and helped him develop some skills in staying on task. You might want to look for some good therapist who could help you with ways to work with your son without meds, or to wean him off the meds.

Hi,

My son who is also 6 yrs old had ADHD and we are trying to pin point something else. My husband and I are doing alternative, like social skills class, my husband and I even took parenting class. He also sees a talking dr. (a therapist). Dr. told us to tap him on the shoulder and put his face so he faces us when talking. I don't give him sweet unless he is good in school. This year he's in 1st grade and he is not doing his work in class, he brings his workbook home. We have good days and bad days but God is good to us.

Good Luck..

M.

Lots of good advice already. Please put him on liquid vitamins you can add to water or juice. You can get at your local vitamin store or order online. They will help, not cure the problem. Kid grocery store vitamins are junk and not easily absorbed. Also have his eyes checked by an actual eye doctor as some parents don't realize the child is having trouble seeing until around age 8 or 9. I am a firm believer that kids are kids and you may notice some of your sons behavior in you or your husband or possibly you can remember when you were kids. It is a big world and if you have a daydreamer it is even bigger. Best wishes from a Grandmother of a wonderful 9 year old daydreamer!

Hi there - sometimes when the meds don't work then either he doesn't need them OR you haven't found the right med yet OR there is another issue that isn't being addressed. With our son who has sensory integration we have found that a high protein breakfast along with a wonderful OT that we go to every week - we pay out of pocket, not through the school has helped. His teachers think we are crazy - they say he is normal - the credit goes to the OT. School based OTs are great, but can't give a child the one on one they need with an hour (in our case 1 1/2 hours of time.

Oh - buy the books The Out of Sync Child and The Out of Sync Child has Fun - great books and easy to read. Also, check out the seats available through Isokenetics - 14" seat and it can help kids sit still and focus. It will come with way to much air, just use a bicycle pump to get rid of some of the air.

I think you gave birth to my son's soul twin. You could be describing my 9 y.o. Not hyper but can't pay attention to save his life.
It was causing our son some self esteem issues. Adults and kids always nagging him to finish things, pay attn, horrible time remembering anything.
We also tried the no red dye or preservatives first, low sugar etc but decided to go with the medication. The one that is finally working is Metadate cd. We don't see any bad side effects. He's fine but a little chatty when it leaves his body about 6 at night. Works for school and homework though and that is really what we needed. My son started to feel like he wasn't like other kids and started to feel singled out, hated staying in from recess which he desparatley needed to finish work. The meds took care of that but they aren't for everyone. Good luck with your son.

Hi B.

I feel your pain. All I can suggest is High EPA fish oil every morning. My daughter is dyslexic and I have to say that she improved when we started giving her that. You would have to talk to your doctor and do lots of research on your own because most doctors don't know much about natural remedies. My daughter's biggest issue is still follow through on tasks, but not the immediate ones. The long term ones. by that I mean bringing home the things she needs from school, doing things she is being asked to do after she is done with what she is doing now, etc.

Good luck! Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Dr. Thomas Cowan in San Francisco is an amazing natural doctor. He is also one of only 3 GAPS doctors in the USA. You might want to consider seeing him. You can also order the GAPS book to read. It's "Gut and Psychology Syndrome" by Natasha Campbell-McBride MD. I strongly recommend seeing Dr. Cowan!

Hi B., I may step on a lot of toes mentioning this, but I heard on the radio the other day that the government has spent 4.5 BILLION dollars trying to prove that any of these herbal rememdies work, and not one has come through. On top of which, they are completely unregulated, so you really have no guarantee what, or how much, you're getting. If you want to stay away from more traditional meds, check out the book _The Nurtured Heart Approach_ by H. Glasser. It is a behavvioral model that helps parents and kids work together. I've never tried it with an ADD kid, but I heard the author lecture and he says it works-- it's worth a try.

Hi B.,

I am sorry to hear what you are going through.
You can treat your son naturally to get him balanced. I have been attending Children's Wellness Expo's and learning new ways to keep my grandaughter healthy. There is a panel of medical doctors sharing how to stay healthy without using drugs.

If you want more info let me know and I will share with you.

I have helped many people turn their challenges around to have a better life.

Have a great day.

Hi B.,

I am studying holistic nutrition and learned a lot in my coursework last year about food allergies and the link to things such as ADD (or ADD-like behavior). I have two recommendations. The first is a book, Is This Your Child? By Doris Rapp. Secondly, my nutrition instructor has extensive experience with this as her son also had similar problems. He is now an adult (just graduated college!), and what she learned about nutrition and childhood behavior caused her to change careers from being an attorney to being a nutrition consultant. She lives in Marin, but I am sure could do a phone consultation if you are not in that area. Her name is Susan Machtinger and her website is http://www.yournutritionfocus.com. Her phone number is ###-###-####. Good luck! Stay strong and follow your heart. I know you will find the answer for your boy.

Try Strattera. It is NOT an amphetamine and is usually more effective and it doesn't put them in the ozone. It is really expensive, though, so you might have to fight the insurance to get it.
