Hi Moms,
My question is finally about myself. I've had a cold since last Wed.(5 days now). It doesn't seem to be getting much better. My nose feels like when you get soap up it in the shower,my ears are blocked and itch. I'm so drained and have to work and care for my 4 yo daughter. If anyone knows of a quick acting non-prescrition remedy to make you feel better, even if the cold is still there it would be gratly appreciated, Thanks in advance. H.

Hi, I found Mucinex to be helpful when I felt the cold had navigated down into my chest. Just wanted to mention that there are two types of that medicine. One of them, I think it was Mucinex "D" would make me feel loopy, it is the only medicine that I have ever known to do this to me, but the Mucinex (without the "D") was good for me.

Ginger Tea:

Peel and dice a 2 inch peice of ginger root and either put it into a tea ball or tie it up in some cheese cloth. Drop it into some boiling water and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Take it out and transfer the ginger tea to a mug or tea cup and stir in some local unpasturized honey if you have it available.

Ginger and honey are natural immunity boosters and have antibiotic properties. Just keep drinking it and it will cut the time your cold lingers around considerably. All the other cold medicines that you buy at the store just mask the symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi H.,
Hope you feel better soon. This might sound strange, but it's worked for me every time: grate an onion (or two) and squeeze out the juice using a muslin cloth (or a coffee filter, if you don't have any muslin). Soak two cotton pads in the juice and stick in your ears overnight. It might burn, but that is actually a good sign (do NOT do this if you have any open sores). Do this up to 3 nights in a row, you can also do it during the day, but your ears will temporarily smell of onions, so prob. not best to do it if you have to leave the house :-)
Warm any leftover juice, add a spoonful of honey, lemon and ginger and gulp it down.
The quercetin in the onion works wonders: (cf. http://www.phytochemicals.info/phytochemicals/quercetin.php)

Eat lots of fruit and veggies.
Drink ALOT of WATER.
Get a neti pot and put warm salt water in it and use it, it works wonders real fast.
If you can't get a neti pot then I would gargle 3 x a day with warm salt water.
Have some honey and lemon together and let it slide down your throat. (Lemon and Honey Heals).

I hope you feel better soon.

I would put some sol-u-mel in a vaporizer also use some slightly diluted (in a carrier oil like jojoba or olive oil) melaleuca oil on your chest. And make sure you step up the vitamins-and drink plenty- I use Emergen-C in my water..

I appreciate your interest in a natural cure. I've used just about everything but the garlic listed below - and the onion in the ears. That said - while it's possible you have a sinus infection, the fact that your ears are blocked and itch may indicate an ear infection. TO my mind, it's not a good idea to trifle with ear infections. I'd suggest a trip to your family doctor to make sure your ears are OK. While you're there, you can ask if he/she has any natruopathic remedy suggestions as well, since you want to avoid a drug solution.
If your throat hurts at all, I recommend raw apple cider vinegar ("with the mother") solution. 1 Tablespoon in 6-8 oz of water. Take 1 T of the solution on rising to gargle and spit. Immediately follow with another 1 T of solution to gargle and swallow. It's not tasty. But it'll help. If you're able, continue with the 1 T of solution to gargle/swallow throughout the day and repeat the process again the next day.

You might have a sinus infection... so perhaps getting an over the counter med for that.... Sudafed is one brand. There are many others.
Hopefully you can get to a Doctor... sometimes sinus infections are hard to get rid of.
My Husband has those... and tends to get sinus infections. He uses a "neti pot" which is a nasal rinse... and cleans out the sinuses using warm water.
You can get it at any drug store.

But.. perhaps I would, go to a drug store... and speak to the Pharmacist there... tell him/her what is going on, and see what he/she recommends. That would probably be your best bet.

all the best,
Susan

Mucinex helps me feel better. I buy the generic brand but can't think of its name. I also suggest taking Vit C, 1000 mg or more along with zinc. I buy the individual serving packages that mix in water; Emer gen C.
