I've researched trip activities with this site- www.roadsideamerica.com. There are some neat things out there that not everyone sees, better, I think, than the same stuff every kid does every summer!
My husband and I are planning a trip to see my grandmother and aunt in KY and of course the cheapest route for us is to drive instead of fly. I am needing to know if anyone knows of any websites that will help you plan a trip. We are wanting to make this like a family vacation where we can make stop at attractions either on the way to our destination or on the way back home. I pretty much know about the attractions in the Louisville, KY area because I grew up there but I am just needing to know stuff that is on the way there or back. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Any ideas of things to do for the kids during the ride would be great too!!!!!! My kids are 6 1/2 and 3 1/2 yrs old
The trip was awesome!!!! I was so worried about the kids being bored during the drive out to Kentucky that I shouldn't have worried afterall!!! Both of the kids enjoyed the road trip; thank you so much for all of your helpful advice!!!!!!

We had a friend that would go to AAA and ask for maps that included all the restraunts and such...they would stop at any McDonalds that had a play area so the kids could run around for a little while for a break from the car. They would drive to Michiagan so it was a good 6 hour drive and didn't have a problem. AAA also has attraction sites and stuff but I'm not sure what website to use. sorry.
how old are the kids....I always keep plenty of snacks, color wonder markers(they only mark on the color wonder paper...)and maybe if you can get a portable dvd player for them to watch movies. My older kids we always play the license plate game...we write down every state we see a license plate for and when we get home count them.
I agree with the other ladies that AAA is great. Another suggestion would be to contact the Kentucky visitor's bureau. They would have lists of all Kentucky attractions.
Best place to get directions, AAA or aaa.com.
As far as things to do--get a DVD player. I was so against having one in the car and my kids are pretty self-entertaining, but we just took a trip to Massachussetts and not 2 hours out of town and the kids were driving me and my husband insane, bickering, whining, throwing toys. We made a detour to Target and got a 2 screen set For $128.
I pack their small backpacks with new activites, crayons, markers, paper, coloring books, small toys, etc. We aslo take a bunch of snacks and water to drink.
My kids are 4.5yrs old.
Have fun!

I've found quite a few that we do on http://www.momsminivan.com/ . Try that one. Currently, my kids are doing a summer journal. The website talks about a trip journal, but we're doing it all summer. All you do is get a sketch pad, or pad of paper without lines and the kids draw their favorite thing of the day in it each night. My children also made a collage on the front of their sketch pad to tell them apart. I have a 12 year old, 10 year old. 3 1/2 year old and a 1 year old. The only one who doesn't do it is my 1 year old.
I live in Dayton, OH and we just got back from a very long road trip from West Palm, FL. I have a 9yr old, 4yr old and I'm 7 months pregnant. It was a very long trip but we did several things to keep the boys busy. We took with us several coloring books and crayons, books to read, action figures to play with. My 9yr old played his GameBoy and shared with his little brother. When it started to get dark we turned on our portable dvd player and played movies to which they may or may not have seen before. We also made sure we had plenty of cds to listen to and sandwichs, snacks and drinks to munch on. We brought their pillows and covers to snuggle up to when they got sleepy which they did alot.
When you have kids you have to take into consideration that there will probably be more stops to make for the restroom and this will give them a little time to stretch their arms and legs and breath in some fresh air.
As far as the stops to make in KY, I would maybe suggest getting onto Kentucky's main website and they should have a visitor category list that should help you out on their different sites to see.
Hope this helps.
Hi A.,
I live in Dayton, Ohio. I am not sure how far you will be from Cincinnati. The Newport Aquarium in just across the river in KY and Kings Island is an amusement park with a kids section that your children would enjoy. KI is about 15 minutes north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio.

I hope you enjoy yourself.
