Need Advice... - Chesapeake,VA

My son is nearly 11 months old and has been attempting to crawl since he was about 8 months old. He still has not done anything more than just being on his hands and knees. He loves to walk while holding my hands though and I am assuming this means he may skip crawling. It is a frustrating time as I'm sure you all know since he wants to be mobile but cannot do it on his own yet. A lot of my friends children around the same age are crawling pros and are working on the wobbly walk. I know not to compare but I am still looking for any advice to help him crawl.

Also, he has been teething since 4 months old but still has no teeth. He has gotten really bad with it in the last 2 months. Any advice to help bring these little buggers out of their gummy homes??

Thanks - in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone who has responded so far. I appreciate all the info although its what I thought I would hear. I guess it was just wishful thinking. I'll have to update when he does pop a tooth and start crawling/walking! Thanks

Sounds like your kid is perfectly normal! I know several babies who didn't crawl until around a year or later, and one that skipped it altogether. Not much you can do to get him to crawl. I suppose spending time with him on the floor might help a little, but he'll crawl if and when he's ready.

Same with teeth. My friend's son didn't get his first tooth until close to a year, and he's 20 months now and still only has like 6 teeth! There is absolutely nothing you can do to make teeth come in faster. Unfortunately you just have to wait it out. (And as the mom of a boy who is TERRIBLE when getting teeth, I feel your pain!)

Sounds like you're doing everything right and your son is just on his own schedule!

Everything will come in due time, just relax and enjoy this moment. They really do grow up too fast. I have 3 kiddos and all of them barely crawled, my oldest and youngest were walking around 8.5 months and my middle one walked around 7.5 months (no joking either). There is a 9.5 year gap between #2 and #3, so let me tell you, I've enjoyed the little things with #3 more than the other two. My #2 loved the bouncer and walker, he wanted to just go, I do feel like the bouncer help build up his leg muscles. My first did like the walker but not the bouncer too much, she just wanted to go, same for my youngest. As soon as they start walking you have to have a closer eye on them too, or they will get into everything.

As for teething, let it come in when they are ready. My first two had their first teeth at 6 months, my last one, took almost a year before they came. All in good time. With my youngest, a couple of co-workers told me how good chicken bones were for teething (drumstick). So when we had them, we would let him bite (no teeth) and put in his mouth. She told me that it's soothing for the gums and not that he would break the bone but there is calcium in them.

Anyway, just enjoy these years, before you know it, they are eating you out of house and home, and going all over the place...

My son never crawled and went straight to walking around 11 mos. I know how frustrating it can be having to still lug baby around. However, my baby girl is an expert crawler at 12 mos, and has no interest much in walking. Why would she when she can get to where she is going with the tried and true crawling? lol Don't worry about it too much- you will have a walker on your hands really soon...
No advice on getting those teeth out. Teeth come when they are ready. My daughter just turned 12 mos and just now got her 4th tooth. She got her first tooth at 9 mos, but those aggravating things have been gnawing at her for months. Hang in there and they will be in soon enough.
Take care!

First off, you can't "help" teeth come in! They come in when THEY are ready, not when WE are ready for them! LOL
Just let him chew on safe things if his gums hurt.

As for the walking--what does your pediatrician say? If he/she isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be either. Many babies are late walkers. a lot of kids skip crawling--my son did.
O. thing I wanted to mention was that while my son was receiving some OT for fine motor issues in his hands, the therapist asked me if he skipped crawling because a lot of kids with delayed fine motor and weak hand strength do--I guess the crawling on their hands build up the hand muscles--so keep an eye out for that if he does skip crawling!
Good luck!

MIne didn't crawl much but she cruised forever! She loved to walk with my fingers & would get mad when I wouldn't do it constantly. finally, at 15 months my husband & I started sitting across from each other & started giving her a gentle "shove" to each other. It was a great game for her, running into mommy or daddy's arms. We did that over one weekend & on that monday, I started doing the same only sitting across from our (very padded) couch. She was walking independently by the end of the week. Obviously, at 15 months we weren't really "pushing" her but it was a safe way to practice, cause mommy's back couldn't take much more "finger walking"! She's always been a little fearful to try things but once she does, she takes off. Yours may be the same??

Re: the teeth, not much you can do about that but keep him comfortable. Mine liked the mini frozen whole wheat bagels to gnaw on, until they got gooey ;-)

He's fine....My son did not walk until 16 months. I also understand that some kids don't get their first tooth until a year old. At his one year check-up discuss with your pediatrician but he sounds pretty normal still.

well you can't force either thing to happen. My son was 11 months and got 5 teeth all at once. he didnt' crawl until he was almost a year then walked at 14 months. He will crawl when he is good and ready. He will also get his teeth when his body decides to pop them out. Don't worry or compare all it will do is drive you crazy. Just enjoy the fact that he is in one place because once he goes he may not stop, mine hasnt'!
