Need Advice About My 10 1/2 Mo. Old Not Sleeping at Night Anymore

My daughter who is now almost 11 months old is having trouble sleeping through the night now. She has always been a great sleeper and never had problems sleeping throught the night until a few months ago. Here is some background info- she started getting ear infections that antibiotics couldn't clear leaving us to give her shots. After doing this twice we went to a ENT specialist and he said we needed to put tubes in her ears and take her adnoids out because they were causing so much drainage in her throat that it sat behind her ears causing fluid to build up and then next thing you know another ear infection. The thing is she never ran a fever or pulled on her ears so we never knew she was sick until we took her to her well baby check ups and the docs were like Wow I'm surprised her ear drum hasn't busted. Needless to say last week she had the surgery and she did great. That same afternoon she was eating and drinking and playing like nothing had happened. Here's my question-over the weekend she began screaming during the night and I couldn't calm her down and finally I would get her back to sleep but when I put her down she would awake and begin crying again. I am at my wits end after several nights of this and the only way to calm her is to hold her and she ends up sleeping between my husband and I. Last night this happened and she was just so restless-tossing and turning and screaming and crying but still asleep. I don't know if this is from the surgery, if she's in pain, or what so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

What can I do next?

it sounds like she is in pain. if she is asleep and is tossing and turning she is probably in pain. she may have another ear infection or maybe it is pain from the surgery. i have had surgery 6 times and the doctor always gave me pain releif instructions coming home from the surgeries. you need to follow those instructions. if you cant find those instructions you can call the doctor who did the surgery to get them. also it is a good idea to call the doctor who did the surgery and tell him her symptoms because she may have an infection from the surgery and he may need to see her. the sooner you take care of infections the easier they are to handle otherwise they can get out of control.

it does sound to me like she is in pain. have you tried motrin? it would reduce any swelling and allow her to get some sleep. you may need to take her back to the ent, i have heard of ear tubes clogging, and fluid collecting behind them. they have to be cleaned out all of the time. if they are clogged, the ent can clear them out, and prescribe drops for you that should help to keep them from clogging again. good luck, i hope you get some sleep soon.

When I first read your question, I was going to tell you how (1) babies go through sleep phases where they sleep good then bad and back and forth (2) and how lucky you are that she was even sleeping thru the night since many toddlers do not (3) and I was going to encourage you to just stay patient, try no to resort to harsh tactics like crying-it-out, and cross your fingers that this phases passes quickly. But the more I read, the more I feel worried for you. I would call her doctor ASAP. Sounds like she's not simply crying, but screaming, and having a hard time getting comforted. This does not sound normal to me, especially since she just had surgery. I would call TODAY and if they can't see her soon, maybe you can atleast talk to a phone nurse. Good luck and best wishes! Hope your little girl is feeling better soon!

My little girl (who got tubes @ about 2) did seem like her ears were more "sensitive" (esp to the wind blowing) at first. I'd try giving yours some Motrin and check back in w/ the ENT if that doesn't help. ? Did they give anything oral for pain? (Ie tylenol with codeine or something?) Sometimes pain meds (codeine/hydrocodone), even benadryl, that usually make us adults sleepy make young kids bonkers and restless.
Good luck.

I would definately make a phone call to her dr's office and ask them about it. If she is in pain (which it sounds like to me), she may need to have her ears checked out again.

Better safe than sorry. Best of luck!

Both of my daughter and myself had our tonsils out in the last 3 years. About 4-5 days after surgery all of us had pain in our ears. That's because the area around the ear drum had swollen after the surgery. My ears hurt worse than my throat for about 6 days. I would recommend that you sleep in a reclining clair with her sitting up so as not to add additional pressure. The pressure will will go away in a few days.
