I am desperately looking for ideas to help my miserably teething 15 month old....he has his first 2 molars breaking through up top and boy, is he just beside himself! He even threw up a few times!!! He sucks on his pacifier, and I guess he is just swallowing down so much saliva, that he ends up waking up in the middle of the night and spitting it up. I called the doc, and it is nomral which I thought but it would be really nice to hear if this happenend to anyone elses babies out there!!! My older son never used a pacifier so this never happened to him when he teethed. I have been giving him tylenol here and there. But he hasn't wantedt to eat much, only softer foods so I don't want to give him too much tylenol that may hurt his tummy. He will have periods of playfullness but then get really cranky and nothing will appease him. He will touch at his face and nose area, so it is obvious he is hurting! He won't always take a teether either. Any ideas out there?? Also, how long does the crankiness usually last? I head or those Hyland tablets so I may try them.

What can I do next?

TEETHING TABLETS...the best ever! My son had a horrible time with teething, these saved us! You can find them at most health food stores and some grocery stores near the oragel.

I read somewhere that a frozen bagel, cut in half, is good for teethers, or a frozen steak fry! Good luck!

I'm currently using an amber teething necklace with my daughter and she's been great. The purpose of the necklace isn't to gnaw on. Amber is a natural analgesic and when worn on the skin, it releases healing oils that helps babies and young children to stay calm and more relaxed throughout teething. This website has an incredible price for them - I paid 2x as much. http://www.threesisterstoys.com/p-25-amber-teething-neckl...

And yes, I have seen a lot of boys wearing them too.

Good Luck whatever you do!

ice chips. If he doesnt want a teether. We used ice chips and the cold from the ice chips helped to sooth and numb the pain of the teeth. just dont give more than one at a time we dont want him choking and try anbesol too.
Rubbing anbesol on the gums will also numb the area these two are worth trying,
good luck

hi Julie, i feel so sad for your little one. i too had one child that had no problems and then my second had 2-4 teeth come in at one time, so he had difficulites with teething, he was miserable. one thing that i did was freeze wet washcloths (baby sized) and would pull them out dampen them a bit and hand them to him in his highchair. he will get wet as the washcloth thaws. but it helped. also my pediatrician suggested frozen broccoli spears or frozen bagels. i didnt try this trick. but worth the try. The other thing, has he been pulling at his ears at all? i only wonder if possible ear infection? just a thought. good luck. i also would give my boys tylenol or motrin and this was only when they were miserable and nothing would work. good luck. I have 2 boys who did the same thing. As far as sleeping goes have you tried elevating the babies head. There's a great wedge made out of foam that fits under the crib sheet so that the child is at an angle and it also alleviates pressure on the mouth.I found it at K-Mart but can't remember the name. You could also try popsicles crushed up,biter biscuits,or even a vibrating teether. My son had one and loved it.The best thing to remember is that it doesn't go on forever there is an end to both his and your misery.

HI Julie,
My daughter is going through the same thing right now and it is hard to figure out what will make her feel better! She won't eat much either...this past Saturday I don't think she ate anything! I was worried, but not too much because she is normally a very good eater. I did notice, yogurt is a great old standby...anything cold and soft like you said will help. A popsicle, supervised off course, he'll love that. I buy the sugar free ones. As for tylenol, as long as its infant's tylenol and/or infant's motrin, I was told by my doctor that by administering it to your child over 2 days or say 4 days, will not hurt the child when following the proper dosage instructions. You can alway call your dr to be sure. Oragel, and those tablets seem to be a short term fix. As soon as you start to see the tooth actually cut in, the pain will hopefully subside. Until then, be patient and hug your little one when he needs a hug! I think the pain and cutting of the tooth probably takes anywhere for 2 to 4 days total with the pain factor. ugh. i know! Hang in there. I'm right there with you!

Buy a teething net and put frozen fruit or ice cubes or icepops in it and this should help his teeth. I used one for my son and he would just suck on the thing and be content when he was teething. It would be just enough that it wouldn't melt every where.

Hi Julie,

My doctor said that tylenol never works and to try motrin for infants/children. It works better on the pain. I have two daugthers who are are miserable when their teeth were and are coming in. So i know what you are going through. I also picked up from whole foods chamoille, it's natural pathic. It works, it helps them calm down too. The teething tablets helped when my girls were infants, but as the molars come in I can't say it works as well. Try some frozen peaches in the net with the ring.

Good luck!

Mother of two girls ages 13 months and 4 years old.

I used Motrin instead of Tylenol (I personally felt it wokred better for my daughter when she got 2 molars in at the same time). Also - I gave her pedialyte freezer pops because my daughter wouldnt take a teether either. I never tried the Hyland tablets so I cant speak from experience but I have heard good things about them. The molars last a little longer than a regular tooth because they arent as sharp and dont cut through as easy. Just bear with it and it will be better soon. Can you keep a pacifier in the fridge or something so that its cold on his gums? Maybe that will help numb or soothe (whichever)?? Also when this happened to us - I mostly gave my daughter the Motrin at nap and bed time (so she could actually sleep). But it sounds like you are doing everything you can - so keep up the good work!

We gave our son ice pops...he loves them, they are cool and he can chew on them. Someone else told me raw (large) carrots are good too...depending on how used to eating solid foods he is...Good luck!

I in no way want this to come across as negative but does your baby have colic? Just had to ask being the mom of TWO colic baby boy's (and survived and still married)!
I think you are doing everything right and just be sure to have a "back-up" person available for when you need a few minutes to gain your composure. I think that crying being the only way to communicate at that age, for the most part, this is expected? Just trust your instinct and get that back-up you can call on when needed. faith in yourself will rub-off on your kids. boy, i should listen to what i say. lol
Best of luck!

We use frozen (organic cotton) cloths with water to suck on in a panic situation.

I also found that amber teething necklaces work wonders. We put one on our youngest daughter and the next day she stopped complaining. It is a natural, safe way to go and provides a continual soothing effect which helps prevent her from getting overwhelmed instead of an emerging treatment. She wears it all the time and hardly notices it. We got ours from http://ecoprecious.com they are very nicely made and real baltic amber.

I hope this helps.

Hi Julie,
My 13 month old is going through the same thing. With diarrhea to boot. I keep a bunch a teethers in the freezer, so when ever I open the freezer, he knows there is something in there for him too. Another trick is too put cold, wet washclothes in the freezer, and let him suck on those once they have frozen. Popsicles are a nice treat too. I recently bought these baby tootwipes called Spiffies at whole foods. You use them to wipe their teeth until brushing is more practical. It seems to feel really good on him gums. Watch out for your finger though!

If you are concerned about the tummy ache limit motrin, it is harder on the stomach. But I do suggest alternating the tylenol and motrin. Kids don't eat when they are in pain. Our son wouldn't eat unless the pain killer was working while he was teething.

Julie,
Our son had a hard time with teething and I found a homeopathic tablet that worked great, It is called Highland Teething tablets you can usually find them at your natural foods store. Our son did great, we would give him the tablets for immediate results and then tylenol to help him sleep etc. I hope this helps.

Hi Julie,
My 6 month hasn't started teething yet but I have heard that Hylands teething tablets work really well. I actually have seen them at Stop & Shop & Walgreens.
Also, I've heard a lot about amber teething necklaces. You can find them on line or there is a shop in West Hartford that sells them. It's actually a necklace that the baby wears - sounds a little weird to me, but if it helps I'm going to try it!

Good luck!
