Need Advice on 9 Mos Old Eating

My daughter is almost 10 mos old and is only eating baby food and her cereal. when I took her ein for her 9 mos checkup the Ped asked me if she was eating any table food. I explained to him that I had tried some chunky stage 3 in the jar just to see how she would do with it. However, anytime I try to give her anything with even the slightest lump in it she gags until she throws up. She is not gagging from choking (bc it doesnt even get that far in her mouth) but rather from the texture. I am still trying things but she keeps gagging grom having it in her mouth. I dont know if this falls within the normal things for children her age. She doesnt typically put things in her mouth at all...even toys. She isnt the typcial baby that chews on everything. The only thing she really puts in her mouth is her fingers and hands. Other than that she doesnt stick toys in her mouth. I feel like her Ped was wanting me to try to start transitioning her to table food but she just wants nothing to do with it. I have also tried introducing her to a sippy cup and she isnt liking that either. She will just chew on teh piece in her mouth (it has a soft rubbery mouth part). So is there things I should try to get her used to table food that I am not or is she just not ready. She loves babyfood bananas but I have tried giving her tiny cut of pieces of banana and she gags. I have tried tiny pieces of veggies, mashed potatoes, and even a teething cookie. She gags at anything in her mouth with consistency. Anyone else experiencing a similar thing? Anyone have any perspective or advice on this?
Thanks in advance!!

I can't say that my kids were the same way because they bashed on anything I put in front of them (including spinich) but I did have a friend who's kid was like this. I guess it's just a phase. Keep feeding her the baby food. I finally just got my 1 year old switched over to a sippy cup...sippy cups are hard to switch to. They like the comfort of the bottle. Give her a regular cup to play with, and also a sippy cup with a little juice in it. I did that and it helped. My daughter is pretty much skipping the sippy cup and going straight to a regular.

Why dont you try mash pots, and add sour cream or milk to them to make them a softer consistency. Also you might want to try scrambled eggs, and scramble them soft. If you can get her to eat that at least its a start. I didnt have that trouble with my kids, as soon as I started giving them table food, they didnt want baby food, and I never used any of the stage 3 foods, I just started them on soft table food. Both of my kids did like the baby cereal and they ate that for awhile, mixed with fruit (baby food). I used reg apple sauce instead of baby apple sauce (less expensive), pudding, jello, just a few suggestions. Maybe if she gradually tries table food, you can work into other things.

K.,

If your daughter is otherwise healthy and thriving, I wouldn't fret over it the table food. Maybe she has a sensitive gag reflex. (My daughter does and still has a hard time swallowing pills at 18!) What difference does it make if your daughter eats table food at ten months or 15 months? It doesn't over the course of a lifetime. She could start eating table food in a week or a month, and then you'll forget she ever refused it! :) Relax. Just try smooth table foods! There are plenty of them. (Also, maybe her teeth are hurting her when she chews on lumpy stuff.)

Hello K.. My daughter is ten months old and she also hated the stage three foods, the texture was also her problem. But she loves table food and wants to feed herself. The first thing she started with were Cheerios, I always did that with my kids.
When it comes to the cup, I always started my kids with out a lid. After they realized there was something in it that tasted good, I put the lid on so they could do it themself. With my youngest she only gets breast milk, regular 2% milk, and water. NO JUICE despite what my Dr said b/c my 4 y/o got juice and all that and now "water, yuck" where my sister didn't give her kids juice and they love water. I will see how that works for me :) Best of Luck! It will take a few months for your little one to catch on. I started feeding my daughter Cheerios when she was 5 months old and slowly increased what she eats. I also started her on a cup at 3 months old and she didn't start using the cup herself till she was 6-7 months old. It takes them time, but it sounds like your little one is thriving, so just keep trying.

My oldest daughter has had similar problems (including with her though consant spitting from the beginning) and she eats just fine now.
My pediatrian said some babies take longer on the textures and chewing and thta is just fine. She said to still keep trying her on foods somewhat, to offer her different things, but one thing consitently for a few days till I switch so she can get used to the taste and texture of one thing.
By 9/10 month they do not need to eat table food yet, I guess your ped just wanted to know if you are trying her.
It took me good past 12 month to get her to eat a nice meal and I still had to chop everything up very good even though her freinds would just chew it.
Now that she is 21 months she will eat a lot of different things and actually try almost everything. She still pukes everyonce in a while when some texture is too much or somehting gets stuck slightly or....

Good luck, don't try it to hard she will get aversions otherwise. Try her slwoly and it will come.

You know your daughter better than anyone else. When she is ready to advance to the next food steps, you will know. It sounds like you are feeding her well, and her diet is well balanced. I wouldn't worry. Just enjoy her and your little boy!

My son HATED the stage 3 foods!!! BUT he ate table food like it was nothing. He rarely turns down any food. So I would say try skipping the stage 3 food and cut up some real food small and let her eat it.
Did you tell the doctor how she reacts? Did you explain why you weren't feeding her table food? She should really just be starting on table food, and within the next month should take off. I would say he will probably be more concerned at your next well check up if things haven't changed at all. Best wishes!
As for the sippy cup...Completely normal. It takes 3 to 4 months of playing with the sippy cup before they realize something is in it. You have a great start!

I would keep offering your daughter small bits of food with texture. She needs to get used to it and the only way to do that is to keep offering it. She may not like it and it may take a while but all you can do is offer it. About the sippy cup, I would try one with a straw in it. If she likes chewing on the rubber straw I would try a water bottle with a hard straw top. My youngest daughter wouldn't use a sippy cup but loved the straw cups. Best of luck!

I wouldn't push it at all. My daughter didn't start eating stage 3 foods until she was closer to 11 months, same with some table foods. As long as she is otherwise eating and drinking well, and is healthy, who cares what her Dr. says. No use is forcing her if she is having a difficult time. I would just try again in a couple of weeks, or even a month from now. As for the sippy cup, my daughter used hers around 11/12 months. She had practiced with it before, but she enjoyed throwing it more than anything. Don't worry, she'll get the hang of it. Dr's, and 'experts' are so determined to push their standards on every baby, even though each child is different. My daughter never even crawled, she just started cruising at around 10 months, then was a full fledge walker by 13 months. I remember people were like, 'what do you mean she isn't crawling?' Like I commited some great sin. And, yes, at 15 months, she still takes a bottle sometimes (gasp lol) My point is, don't worry about things like this. As long as she is happy and healthy, who cares right? My daughter still gags sometimes on food, and her own hand lol. I still, at 31, can't really swallow pills lol.

It sounds like just a sensory issue with the texture. You may want to suggest to her doctor about having a feeding evaluation. They are usually with the speech therapists. My son is in feeding therapy and that is one thing they work on.
Here is a couple of sites with info hope it helps..Let me know if you have any more questions. T.

Your daughter isn't ready for table foods. Don't worry about what her Dr. says. She will let you know when she's ready. My son started pureed foods at 8mos, table foods at a year, sip cups after a year! Every child is a little different. As long as she's getting plenty of formula/breast milk her nutrional needs are being met. Offer pureed foods, and cereals as a learning experience. She won't be 4 years old and still eating baby foods! Allow her to be a baby for a while longer!

Hello K. ! I'm N. . I'm a mother of two and a Senior pharmacy tech of 7 years . I've never heard of this before but, the only thing I can think of is giving her pedisure or some kind of nutritional drink made for infants and kids . This way you know she getting what she needs even if she doesn't eat . I hope this helps a little .

My daughter was the same way. I think she was actually swallowing stage 3 foods around 11 months. Until then, she gagged on them. I would just offer my daughter the stage 3's every other day until she finally started to eat/swallow them without problems. It took a couple weeks, but now she's 13 months and eating a lot of things. She'll let you know when she's ready.
