Need Advice on a Good Lactose Free Formula for 4 Month Old

My 4 month old daughter's been on Similac Alimentum since around 6 weeks after finding out she has acid reflux. All the tests are behind us now, she's on medication for the reflux, and we now know she has mild GERD AND lactose intolerance (but not an allergy). I'd like to see if she can come off Alimentum since a) it's so expensive and b) she doesn't have an allergy, per say. The GI gave me a few alternatives but was wondering which one to choose? The unknown still is whether or not has milk based protein sensitivity IN ADDITION TO lactose intolerance. I would go for soy, but am afraid of constipation, since she's already taking 3 tsp of rice cereal for every ounce of formula and that alone could cause constipation. Here's what they recommended: Simlac Lactose Free Advance, Enfamil Lactofree, Isomil Advance and 2 soy choices (Enfamil Prosobee and Goodstart Supreme Soy DHA and ARA). Any advice out there?

What can I do next?

I'm sorry to say I have no advice on the formula options you have to choose from but having both children with food allergies I have used Nutramigen and Alimentum. I just wanted to mention, should you choose to continue or restart Alimentum, that we get ours in large quantities off Ebay and it's usually $16/$17 a can with shipping.

Good luck!! K.

My son has the same issues. He is now 8 and the Gerd is no longer a issue. It was the formula that was aggravating it. We switched to Goodstart soy and it made a difference. The vomiting stopped and the potty issues got better as well. It took about 8 to 10 days for the formula to clean out his system and get him regulated but he now drinks Silk soy milk and we are feeding him some lactose products like cheese and some milk products without issues. In all the information I read and research it says that most children can grow out of their intollerance with slow introduction to lactaid products. Also with the new products such as Lactaid tabs, they can enjoy alot of things they previously could not.. so don't worry .. stay with goodstart for now and later introduce Silk soy milk with rice cereal and mixed cereal in her milk then it is downhill from there.. They even have soy based ice cream .. you can find it at Food Lion and Ukrops.. good luck and god bless

I would suggest Isomil Advance I know two other moms that have little ones as well that have severe acid reflux. They both have used Isomil. I also used Isomil when my son (who's now 10) and it wonderful.

Congrats on your little one!

My grandson is on a specialty formula because of reflux and serious GERD. Before the specialty formula we used the Enfamil Lactose free, It made a huge improvement for him and is not much more money that regular formula. You have to watch the soy formula's as the ones from Similac are processed on dairy equipment, says so right on the label.

hope this helps
