Hello ladies! Well we all know summer is fast approaching; and that means swimming. We have a pool in our back yard, we often go to the neighborhood splash park, and we have a time share that has a pool and we always go to Water Country. In other words we do alot of swimming/ water activities. Ok my 11 yr just had her first period earlier this month( Well May) and she loves to swim. What experiences have ya'll had with this age and tampon use? I really didn't start to use tampons until my senior year in High School. I found them uncomfortable but that might be due to using regular ones. My mom never really used them and she just bought me whatever. I know that they make slenders etc. I just want some personal experience feedback please.

i wore them immediately starting when i got my period just before my 10th birthday. my mom used tampons exclusively so that is what she showed my sister and me. she had us read the insert and follow the guidelines. i got my period in the summer and we had a pool. i was also a competitive swimmer.

they make so many types. those multi-pack boxes have junior ones in them. i just gave those ones to my neighbor's daughter who just started.

Hi K.
My daughter got her period two weeks before she turned 13 (in January.) She's a dancer. She wore a tampon the first day. They have the light slender ones, and the sport ones, too. I would definitely recommend the plastic applicator or at least the ones that are curved at the top (if cardboard.) We looked at the picture - practiced - and she did it. She had no problems the first day, a little the second - but now it's a breeze. Good luck.
Oh, one more thing, she doesn't sleep in them.

My OB/GYN told me that my daughter should really not use them until her cycle is regular and "normal". The tampons can cause problems if there isn't enough flow. For my daughter we just attempt to schedule outings around this time of the month for her. I really wouldn't use them since your daughter just got her first one.

Hey Keisha- I got my period at age 11 and started wearing tampons right away- i was on a swim team and was a gymnast so pads weren't really an option. My mom bought me the OB non-applicator kind- mainly because i was WAY too self-concious to carry around anything that someone might see- the OB ones fit into your hand. haha. However, the slender applicator ones would be fine too- it's really just what your daughter is comfortable with, and that she understands that they have to be replaced every few hours- I didn't get the whole "your flow changes" idea and stained a few leotards. My mom was really matter-of-fact about it, and since tampons are just so much cleaner anyway, it was an easy thing for me to do. I think the main thing is that she knows not to sleep in them, and that at first to only use them when necessary- since she just started her period will be irregular and she won't have a good understanding of heavy days/light days/etc.
