Hello all! Need help please! I am going over to clean my grandmas house this week and desperatly need some assistance with two major problem areas. First, her shower... it has the worst shower scum and mold I have ever seen. Its an offwhite shower, antislip floor and completely disgusting! Second, the miniblinds...they have so much dust and grime you would never know they were white. A friend of mine said I could soak them in the tub...can you do that and what do I soak them in?

Any help with cleaning tips on these two things would be so greatly appreciated! All you moms rock!

Hi-

Been there with the whole nasty grimy tub! I have found what works best is scrubbing bubbles brand shower scum remover, its at safeway in a spray bottle and it works miracles! spray it on, leave it a few minutes to soak the grime off and come back and sometimes you need to scrub it off but most of the time it washes off. About the mini blinds......usually you soak them in hot soapy water, but if you have white ones you can add bleach with the soap and water.....i did this and they looked BRAND NEW!!
GOOD LUCK and HAPPY CLEANING!!!

Hi H.
I have lots of friends come to me for cleaning tips because I usually can clean just about anything. On the bathroom scum, get a spray bottle and mix 3/4 CLR to 1/4 water to clean tub, tiles, sink, and toilet. Also it will not hurt the shower curtian. Use full strength CLR in a cup to remove hard water from faucets, just hold the cup up to the faucet for about 1 minute and then wipe with rag. They claim Limeaway will do all this cleaning and it just doesn't. As for the miniblinds, bleach water in the tub will work but you still have to wipe each one. Some other basics..... Vinegar will remove marker stains from cloth without removing color so it's safe for your furniture. Baking soda will get juice or kool-aid stains out of a wood table or off any counter surfice. Wipe the area with a wet rag then sprinkle baking soda over it, use the soda as a scrub with your fingers as if it is the wash cloth. You will see instant results and the entire stain will come out. Hope this helps, Smiles B.

I seriously believe in Baking Soda and Vinegar, it works wonders and is not toxic. Just mix a 1/4 cup of BS and 1/2 Cup of V mix and then put on surface, let it soak and then scrub with a rough sponge.

Yes you can put them in the tub. I have done it myself. Fill tub quarter full of cold water and cap of bleach. Let soak and 1/2 hour or longer doesnt matter you can leave them for as long as you need. Take cloth wipe of remainder of dirt rinse and let dry.

Hey H.,
I found this amazing stuff for the bath/shower - its called Krud Kutter or Crud Cutter - find it at Home Depot. It takes that scum right off, after you spray and let it set for a bit. You have to scrub a little, but it totally takes it away!! As far as the mini-blinds, I have soaked mine in just warm soapy water - the dust should come off in the tub.
Have fun!!

When I first cleaned my blinds, in my new home, they were grody! I just sprayed windex on the whole thing, both sides. Then I went from the bottom up and sprayed and wiped with a wash clothe. It took a while but it worked!

I went to the Dollar store and Bought a bottle of Awsom bleach cleaner. it is in a spray bottle. I would line the widow seal with with towel (or ones that can get bleach on) spray the blinds and let them set for a while, then wipthem down,

the same with the shower. Can your Grandma spray a bottle? If so get her a bottle of Lysol shower spray. Have her spray after each shower. She does not need to wip after words. It works great.

My cousin uses cheap shampoo to clean our tub. He just smears it on, lets it sit, and then rinses it off. The tub which is probably 50 years old looks great. I don't know if it would stay on the walls long enough to work.

If you don't want to wash the blinds yourself you can take them to a business that cleans blinds. I did that several years ago because my blinds are also antique and I wanteed to keep them for their style. They also replaced the tapes and cords so that they worked like new. If your grandmother's blinds are expensive the price is worth it. I did this 25 years ago and remember the price being reasonable. However, if her blinds are the same as ones you can buy at a general merchandise store it wouldn't be worth it.

I've purchased off the shelf inexpensive blinds for my daughter's apartment and if your grandmother's blinds are like those you might want to just buy new ones.

You are so good to be cleaning your grandmother's house. I've done that relatives and it is hard work and truly a labor of love.

Hi H.,
The one cleaning product that I love the most (especially with having kids) is the Magic Eraser! It will definitely get rid of the soap scum, but it will take a little bit of elbow grease to help out. As for a spray-on solution, I don't really like to use strong chemicals, and this solution seems to work for me: 1/2 clear vinegar, 1/2 water in spray bottle; spray on, rinse then buff dry. This might not be strong enough for really bad soap-scum, but the magic eraser will "erase" what's left behind.
With mini-blinds, I have taken them down, and just used dish-soap to clean, and then rinse with the hose. You can hang them outside to air-dry.
Good-Luck!

H.,

I found a book that has tips about cleaning and it says to use bleach and cream of tartar, or make a paste with borax and lemon juice. The directions says soak and scub, scrub, scrub.

For the miniblinds, it says to saturate a cloth with rubbing alcohol and wrap it around a rubber spatula and clean each slat. If you really want them to shine, you can use white shoe polish and they'll shine like new.

I cleaned houses for a long time what I found worked great in bathtubs is the liquid comet (it is not completely liquid its pretty thick)I turn the shower on hot water and let it run for a little while let the tub get really wet then use the comet and a green scrub sponge. For really dirty blinds you can take them outside and spray them off with a hose than wipe them down or they have special cleaners for those and I think you can just get one at like WalMart.
