Need Colic Help, Please- Tried Everything!!! Is Their a Link to C-section?

Hi, our newborn baby girl is developing more and more colic symptoms at 3 1/2 weeks. Sleeplessnes, excessive crying, screaming, reflux,... all the symptoms. I was unable to breastfeed, and have tried Gentlease, Lactofree and now am on Nutramigen. She is now on prevacid for the reflux. Thinking of trying the Carnation Good Start out of desparation. We have watched Dr. Harvey Karp, and we swoosh, swaddle, swing, pacify, babywear in sling, use white noise, mylicon, gripewater, have tried the crib wedge.. basically everything under the sun!!! A friend of mine took her baby to a chiropractor at five weeks and said it helped immensely. The idea horrified me at first, but after much reading I am reading their could be a link between long pushing at labor, c-section and colic due to baby being misalligned. Which I did have a two-hour pushing session that ended in c-section. Any thoughts or ideas about colic would be appreciated, thanks!!!

So What Happened?

Well, thanks so much for all of the responses!!! It made me feel good to know that we are not the only ones going through this!!! The colic is not gone by any stretch, but definitely getting better as she gets older. Less screaming fits, and she is starting to sleep in longer stretches instead of waking up every 15 minutes. The prevacid and Nutramigen seem to be helping a little so we are going to persevere onward! Thanks again for all of the help! This made me feel encouraged when I was feeling a little tired and discouraged! :)

My son had colic when he was a baby. My pediatrician at the time said "As a doctor he'll grow out of it" "As a parent go buy some childrens mylanta and put 1/4 tsp in his bottle. To my delight, the first 1/4 tsp he ate his milk and quit crying. That was the advice that was given to me and it worked. I am by no means a doctor but that crying will make you insane. I hope this helps you out.

I finally at 7 weeks old put my daughter on Nutramigen and put .6 ml of gas drops in every bottle, seems to help a lot. You may also want tto try Prosobee Lipil, it is soy based. It was recommended for my nephew and it worked for him.

Hey J.! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. You have my sympathy!! My son had this for 3 weeks. Some things I tried that seemed to help him to relax enough to lay down was laying him on his belly on a warm blanket or towel. We would put one in the dryer for about 5 minutes to get it warm and lay him on the floor. This usually would get him to start settling down. I tried everything! We finally switched his formula to soy based, and he was a new baby! Talk to your pedi, and see if this could be something you guys could try also. Worked wonders with my son!

I know you about at your wit's end, but remember it will go away!!

Good luck!! R.

Yes, absolutely take your baby to the chiropractor. I have a name if you need one or two. We go to a husband-wife team. The chiro we went to has helped my 5 month old tremendously. He had gassy issues as a newborn, and we saw improvements within 2 weeks of going. We still visit about every 3 weeks. Even now, if he is getting hiccups, not pooping, etc. we'll go and he will be immediately cured:) One time, he was getting the hiccups all the time, and when he got adjusted, he let out the loudest burp. I was so happy!! At your baby's age, you won't even be able to tell that she is getting adjusted. She might even sleep through it. No need to be scared:) The other thing is that your chiro. (if you go to a good one!!) can offer other alternative suggestions to medicine. Mine, for example, had me replace the foam in my son's Graco carseat to help with hiccups and reflux. He loves his carseat now!! Hope this helps. Email me if you need names, ours is in Hurst.

Hi J., Let me tell you I feel your pain. I have been there. My son (who is now four) did the same thing. He started crying at about 5pm and didn't stop until about 2am. No matter what I tried or how I rocked him nothing helped. I did alot of crying and praying myself. Me and my husband took turns with him until he finally fell asleep. I took him to many doctors. But in the end he just finally grew out of it about 4 months old. I got him in a routine and it all just stopped. I don't know that labor played a part in it because I had a very short labor of 6 hrs and only pushed about 4 times. He was a little small at 6lbs 9oz but other than that every thing was normal. There is light at the end of the colic tunnel. Just hold in there. She will be fine. Don't be afraid to let her cry. Have a good cry yourself. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,
I am so sorry to hear you have tried so much and still getting no results.
Unfortunately with my experience, colic is very common and has to just run it's course.
With my son, I remember being at my wits end when all of a sudden, it just stopped one night and it was like I had a new baby! : )
It can last up until 3 mths of age but mine never did. They lasted about 3 weeks max and then it stopped.
(From about 3 weeks old to 6 weeks)
Just try and be very patient, trust me I know it is hard but it will go away!
I wasn't aware of the long pushing/c-section can cause colic but it might be true. My second was a scheduled c-section and he had colic so I think it really is just a natural thing that most babies will go through.
Good luck and remember the 3 week sign of colic.....
If it lasts for 3 hours a day, 3 or more days a week for 3 weeks, then it's colic.
Take care!

Oh, been there twice - hope I can help, even if just a little.

Sounds to me like a pain issue - you've tried "happiest baby" and it didn't work and even Dr. Karp himself said it wouldn't mask pain or other real issues. Look at possible pain probs:

1) As for formula, I don't really know much there 'cause I nursed my two mostly, but I used Nestle Good Start when I couldn't 'cause it has the "comfort protiens". I'd discuss this issue more with the dr. Sounds to me that this might be an issue. If you switch to soy, make sure to ask him about what nutrients it may be lacking that you may need suplemented in (even if at a later date once the baby calms a bit).

2)It still could be acid too though! My kids had an acid issue also and the meds worked a bit, but didn't totally take care of it, so we had to switch to a stronger med. They didn't really spit much, but coughed/choked on the acid and would scream. They both only liked to sleep in an "up" position, with my daughter and first born being the worst. She never slept more than an hour and almost always slept in a sitting (almost-90 degrees) position. I put her in one of those activity centers out of desperation when she was screaming one time and she feel asleep in it 'cause the chair was a real 90 degree chair.

3)As for the chiropractor, I am a firm believer that if you are out of mis-alignment, you may become sick 'cause it restricts your bodily functions. I LOVE chiropractic care for myself (esp. during pregnancy-it helps with easier deliveries) and though I never used it on my kids after birth (cause I never thought about it till they were out of that colic stage), it was brought to my attention after they out-grew colic and I nearly hit myself for not trying it. I have no doubt that it would work. You said you had a long labor and ended in a C-section. I don't think the C-section procedure has anything to do with it but the fact that baby was in the birth canal for a long period of time I think does. When you look at models of a baby birthing, you can tell that they are contorted. The longer they stay in that position, the more likely they are going to need to be re-adjusted (same being the more likely their head is conformed/cone-head). You must remembe that babies are extremely loose jointed. THis allows their bodies to easily manuever through the birth canal, so that is good. BUt it also makes them highly vulnerable to dis-alignment from birth or to become dis-aligned for a good long while after birth (approx. a year from what I've heard), so re-alignment is not only necessary to keep them straight but is done easily (since they are still loose jointed) and should be done often if you believe a mis-alignment is the prob. Chiropractic medicine also works wonders on ear infections and many other ailments. Ask any good chiropractor what it treats or do some reasearch on-line. My biggest suggestion is find a chiropractor that is well-used to working with kids with ailments. I think you will find results!

Hope I helped!

I have also had a c-section (twice!) and two colicky babies!! The second one (eight weeks old now) improved drastically with infamil prosobee (soy formula)! She still has her moments but there was a HUGE improvement when we made the switch! Good luck- and keep your chin up--they really do grow out of it!!

I used to work for a Chiropractor and I will well you that it can help with colic. There is a link between long labor with pushing and your baby getting a misalignment. I would say give it a try.

I dont have specific advice about colic, but wanted to encourage you to give chiropractic a try. Adjusting and infant is nothing like an adult, their bodies move much more easily with the slightest touch, and it can make such a difference with a variety of things. There is a definite link between labor, delivery of any sort, and even a slight misalignment of the spine that will cause your baby troubles. If any nerve has pressure on it from the spine, it can cause it to send "mixed up singals" and it can be almost miraculous for some families to get that fixed. I am a big believer in seeking all avenues of treatment for our childrens ailments, and hope that you can find the balance that works for your child. I just have a hard time accepting "colic" and kids needing to just work through it, I am sure you must be feeling desperate to help solve your little ones problems! Good luck ~A.~

J., My first two children were very colicy and I was breastfeeding. I continued to breastfeed but also used the Carnation Good Start (Soy) and things started to look up. We were also blessed to have a chiropractor as a good freind and he would work on both the kids. My daughter started when she was three months and my son was four months. It was amazing what it did for them. They are too young to do an actual adjustment but what he did was work on them more like a mini massage. It did wonders. I know it can be frustrating to not be able to comfort your baby. but it will pass. Try not to get too over whelmed by it and ask a freind to come and help (if possible) durning the crying spell so you can take a walk. I can totaly relate to it all. Both kids seemed to never be at peace but now I am a mother of three beautiful kids and all are happy and healthy kids. Best Wishes

Definitely try probiotics! Actually I have seen some research suggesting that babies who are born via c-section may be more likely to be colicky because their intestines don't get colonized by the helpful bacteria present in the mother's vagina. You can get a probiotic supplement specifically made for babies at just about any health food store; try to find one that has several different cultures, including l. acidophilus, bifidus, l.reuteri, etc. Here's a study showing that after 4 weeks of probiotic supplementation, the colicky babies' crying decreased by an average of 75%! (Compared to only 26% of the babies getting Simethicone (aka Mylicon). You can read for yourself at: http://www.nutraingredients.com/news/ng.asp?id=73215-biog...

Good luck, and hang in there!

We had similar troubles. I finally asked about Soy formula and my doc said to give it a try. That took care of it. It might be worth a try for your little one. I do agree with the other person, though. Whenever you switch, give it several days to work before switching agaion.
Good Luck!

I don't know much about colic because my son never went through. However, I can totally sympathize with you on the reflux. I breastfeed for the first 2 months but because I went back to work it was hard to continue so we did formula. BIG MISTAKE!!!! He would throw up an entire bottle and he wasn't gaining any weight. We went through over 10 different types of formula, including prescription. Eventually one day I went and got the Carnation Good Start and tried that. After we did that we where able to stop giving him prevacid and everything. I would highly recommend the Carnation Good Start. Like I said my son didn't have colic however he did cry A LOT because of the reflux which may be your daughter problem. Try it, it may help.

There is new research indicating that babies with colic may be lacking certain positive digestive enzymes. L. Reuteri (a probiotic found in certain yogurst like Stonyfield Farms) seems to be making all the difference. I'm not sure how L. Reuteri is being administered to babies, but here is a google search that will lead you to many articles on the recent findings:

I am so sorry to hear that you sweet little girl has colic, but there is hope. My daughter was the same way we were on Nutramigen for supplements I breastfeed, but did not produce enought milk for the frist couple of months. The doctor put her on Zantac which helped, but really just with the reflux. We took her to a Chiropractor Lifetime Family-Wellness Clinic in Hurst. Dr. Jimbob and Dr. C. own the clinic they are great. I could not believe how wonderful it worked. I know it can be scary to think of them adjusting your baby, but it does help. I know with my daughter it was so bad that anything was worth a try and I am so glad we took her. As far having colic w/ a c-section I am not sure if there is correlation. I had my daughter vaginally and a c-section with my son and he was fine not one day of colic. The website is family-wellness.com good luck I know how upsetting this can be. If this is any help my daughter loved the white static on the radio or T.V.

I teach Dr Karps techniques and have a grandson that is 9 weeks old. My DDIL has some real difficulties with it but he sleeps fine for me. She really doesn't like to swaddle him securely enough and is too quick to change to the next thing so he never really settles in. It is incredibly hard when you are postpartum and the sweet baby you were bringing home turns into an uncomfortable and distressed baby you just want to fix. You have my sympathies. If I can help you in any way please feel free to email me, There is some tweaking we can do to Dr Karps techniques.

I haven't read any other responses, so I am sorry if I repeat anything. I have very recently gone through the exact same desperation. Please feel free to email me directly about anything. My third child (now 1) screamed incessantly from the day he was born (and while nursing), ate every 1.5 hours 24 hours a day. Never slept. Constantly had skin problems and diaper rashes. He was vomiting and losing weight at 2 months old. The doctors (including a pediatric gastroenterologist) said it was reflus and 'he was just colicy' and put him on antiacids - zantac and then prevacid. While they helped a little with vomiting, overall there was not significant improvement. I then started a feeding trial and discovered many adverse food reactions. I also started feeding NEOCATE on the recommendation of the specialist as a supplement. It is an amino acid based formula with almost no allergens in it. It is very expensive and tastes bad, but I found it pretty cheap on ebay. He doesn't scream, or get diaper rash. His skin is perfectly clear, and he sleeps through the night. Life is good and I wish someone had told me all this when he was 2 months old and I was so desperate. Consider NeoCate since you are not nursing, you don't have to restrict your diet. My son is allergic to everything (diary, soy, corn, wheat, rye, barley, tree nuts, peanuts, tomoatoes, and berries) and we carefully control his diet to prevent any more problems and a quiet house! Please let me know if you just need to talk to someone who understands.

Hi J.-just remember "this too shall pass!" I totally feel your pain and understand what you are going through. We ended up letting our daughter sleep and eat in the ocean wonders swing-the white noise helps with colic. She too had to be on Nutramigen(stinkiest formula in the world...) the doctor told us to give her mylicon directly in her mouth not in her bottle-that helped. We also did the mylanta thing and it seemed to help as well. I had a very short delivery so I do not think that the labor thing has much to do with it. HTH. Remember to take care of yourself as well. First of all, I think the CSection link to colic is a load of bull poo. I pushed for 3 and a half hours and had a csection and I've known others who have done the same and their children are fine. The people I did know who had colic babies delivered them vaginally.
Second, I want to express how much I feel for you. My mom and aunt were twins and both had colic. My grandmother and great grandfather would tell me stories growing up that made me terrified of a baby with colic. You will definitely be a stronger mother when you come out of this alive! You are a brave woman!
Third, I have been to a chiropractors office called Shippy chiropractic many times. I hear they are very good with care on babies. I also know a great acupressure therapist. (Notice I didn't say acupuncture)If you call Shippy Chiropractic in Plano you can get any information on the accupressure therapist named Joe Constantino. (This man did wonders for my son's gas pains)As well as speak with someone about Dr. Michael Shippy using a little bit of chiropractic therapy on your little sweetie pie. Dr. Shippy's number is ###-###-#### and he is located on the Southwest side of Coit and Park.
This is all the knowledge I have for you and I wish you great luck on this journey you are on. You sound like a great mother to be doing so much to help your little angel. :)

Nutramigen saved one of my twin 4 yr olds, but I recall it took about a week to kick in; gotta give it time to work thru her system. Also with my twin 1 yr olds, I was instructed to give them extra iron supplements and that was tearing up their stomach, so I worked with my dr to eliminate that from their diet. Other things we did: always make sure the baby is upright while feeding - we tilted her head while feeding so that back was supported and was in an incline position - or we fed her in a bouncy chair that was inclined. We held her in an incline for at least 20 mins after each meal. Burping is extremely important. turn her upside down (supported on your legs) so that rear-end is in the air and pat her back to help release the gas. use mylicon drops every hour as needed. work with your pediatrician and gon't give up; keep asking for help and insist on it. It may be fine once you give time for the nutramigen and the prevacid to start working. also the bouncy chair really helps to calm and relax - my best friend became the FisherPrice Ocean Wonders bouncy chair.

I had the same exact problem that you are experiencing. My daughter was put on prevacid at 3months for reflux. I kept her bed elevated at all times. She got colic tablets everyday at bedtime(they are kind of pricey)but work wonders. They are natural so it wont hurt her to give it to her all day long. The doctor put her on soy formula called Isomil Advance, and as soon as we were on that for about a few wks(3-4wks)I saw a dramatic change in her for the better. I was also told to thicken her bottles with cereal(rice). That also helped wonders. By the time she was 5months(2months later)the reflux was basically gone. I stopped the prevacid by the time she had her 6month ckup and the doc was ok with it. I have kept up with her having cereal in her bottle and the kid is now happy as can be and gaining weight with no problem..Good Luck. Email me if you have anymore questions. We can definitely relate...I hope I have helped ya out. ____@____.com Good Luck.
