I am having a small kid party for my son who will turn 5 on Saturday. Any suggestions for some cool games or activities?
I just want to thank all of you for your wonderful ideas! I wanted to do a pinata, but was not sure how to hang it. We are using your idea Jodi C. for the broom stick!!! Also, thanks to all of you for reminding me to "keep it simple". I decided to use the idea of the marshmallow on the spoon relay and pin the sticker on Spiderman. They are also going to decorate brown paper bags with Spiderman stickers before we break the pinata. Again, I appreciate ALL of the responses. BIG HELP!
Hi, K.! I have two boys, and we have always had a pinata at their parties. All of the kids love it! If you don't have anywhere to hang it in a basement or something, maybe you can have two people holding a broom stick or something like that with the pinata hanging from the center of the stick. It's always fun!! Good luck!
My first question would be, is there a theme involved? Like transformers or bob the builder? If so , depending on that is what you decide for games. You could play pin the hammer on bob's tool belt. Or something with the theme of the party. Also you could do musical chairs. If it is a pirate theme you could do a treasure hunt. Good luck and remember just have fun. No matter what you decide to do the kids will have a blast just playing.
A fun game that we played at my daughter's popstar themed party was ' pass the purse '. It is basically Hot Potato. It is played to music and I filled the puse with a small prize, when the music stopped, the child was able to open the purse and keep the gift. Everyone loved it! If you have a theme for your son's b-day, it can be easily altered. I also went on the internet and made a bingo game to go along with the party theme. Kids at this age enjoy Bingo. We used candies for the bingo markers...so even the non- winners had a small treat to eat. We also played musical shapes. I have the game Hul-a-balu so I threw all of those shapes on the floor, turned up the popstar themed music and the girls danced around the shapes until the music stopped. Then take one shape out as the game keeps going....
Get some cheap cars at the Dollar Tree the amount you will need for the boys coming. Get out some pencils and tie string or yarn to the car, hide it (under a couch, whatever, and then make a spider web and tie the other end of the strings to the pencils and keep them by the doorway to the room. Have the boys roll up the string on the pencil to receive the hidden car on the other end. We did this when I was a child and for for my children, we are now doing it for the grandchildren. They love it!!
Take 5 mixing bowls and line them up a foot apart. Have the boys try to throw a soft ball into the bowls one at a time, the winner is the one who can toss the soft ball into all of the bowls and have it stay in.
If you have an even number of boys you can have them run a three legged race.

I love the idea the other poster had about the hot potato purse.
My 4 year old had 'Pumpkin Bowling' last October at her birthday and it was a hit. I bought a six count of one liter water bottles and covered the labels with pictures I found on the 'net. A little masking tape on the floor so the kids know where to stand, a roundish object like a pumpkin or potato - or heavier ball and you've got loads of fun for little ones.
Just keep it simple. The kids will make their own fun for the most part.

a friend of mine had a party for her 7 year old and one of the games they played was bobbing for apples. My 4 yr old daughter loved it and got in2 it just as much as the big kids did.
At that age I would only plan like 1 or 2 games since the kids really lose interest and just want to play with the new toys!! You could have a guessing game, where they guess all the marbles in a jar, or dropping clothes pins into a milk jug. Kids also love relay races where you put a small marshmallow onto a plastic spoon then each kid has to walk with it down the hallway and hand it off to the next person. I have also done this with hard boiled eggs. The kids get a kick out of it.
One thing we like doing for parties is a scavanger hunt. Depending on the time of year and depending on the time available for the party you can do it ahead of time or you can send the list with the invitation and go through their shoe box of stuff during the party. It's really funny to see the items the kids bring. One item we asked for was a colored post it note, someone took a post it note and colored all over it, we gave them credit for it. It's just fun and funny to see the imagination. Of course it was for the 10 year old crowd, but we have done this since my child was 4. I always had her make up the stuff for the kids to find so it was more around the thinking of her age group. We have bought a lot of buttons and put them in a jar and whoever guesses closest wins a prize, and we've always done an age appropriate craft so the kids always had something they did to take home from the party. I went to the dollar store and found candy necklaces that you put together yourself. Of course, not so fun for the parents but the kids had a blast eating them, too. There is also a game similar to the scavenger hunt that you give clues where the next item is. It could be the birthday person's big present or just a prize that someone could get. Again, it's just how much do you want to open your house to children running around it. We did a lot of pin the tail on the donkey, or nose on the clown, or whatever and that was fun. I think at the 4 year old party we did that the rest of the party because the kids thought that was the funnest. You can even have the kids draw the donkey or the clown and cut the nose or the tail out on construction paper so it doesn't cost much.
