Need Help Finding Good Foods for My Daughter

My 5 year old was bitten by a tick in July, and she got Lyme Disease. The doctor gave me specific instructions on a special diet she has to go on. It is dairy free, gluten free, and sugar free. It is only temporary, but I know nothing about finding good foods that don't contain those three things. At my grocery store, there is a whole gluten free aisle, but then I have to make sure the stuff doesn't have diary or sugar in it. Please help. Thanks so much!!

Actually most foods do NOT contain this. They are the *real* foods. They are the foods you buy from usually the outer perimeter of stores - the fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and meats. There is also grains and grain-like products with no gluten, such as "buckwheat" and "quinoa". We also make brown rice. You can go to whole foods markets and get Daiya cheese that has no gluten, dairy, or soy. We make spaghetti from spaghetti squash and buy spaghetti sauce from our local food co-op that has no added sugar or much of anything. I like adding extra garlic and seasonings already made up called "Mrs. Dash".

There are so many recipes and products now-a-days - even Walmart carries gluten-free products, although we mostly stay away from processed foods. Here are some recipes: http://www.foodsensitivityjournal.com/
Also look for recipes pertaining to "paleo" diets which will all be natural with no gluten, dairy or sugar.

And don't forget the probiotics!

Hi there, I would concentrate on foods that are naturally free of these things and then use the gluten free foods as a treat here and there, with the exception of a good gluten free/dairy free bread if your daughter is a pb sandwich lover like mine :) Gluten free foods that are labeled as such are EXPENSIVE. My daughter eats gluten free but not dairy free but just having the bread makes it seem like it isn't as much of a "special diet." I am gluten and dairy free. These are some of the things that come to mind based on what I eat and what my daughter eats... I am assuming that she can have naturally occurring sugars in fruit:

- Fruit smoothies made with any frozen or fresh fruit and unsweetened almond milk.
- Apples or celery dipped in natural peanut butter
- Broiled or grilled meats (chicken, fish, steak, shrimp etc)
- Fresh or steamed veggies
- Salad with balsamic dressing
- Nuts and seeds (my kiddos LOVE cashews, almonds and pistachios)
- Oatmeal made with water and stevia
- Rice crispies or kix (both low in sugar and gluten free) with unsweetened almond milk
- Baked or mashed potatoes or sweet potato with butter (or make "fries")
- Tortilla chips and salsa
- Nitrate free deli meat (hormel makes a natural one and its not that expensive) rolled up and dipped in mustard
- Rice noodles with butter
- Brown or white rice
- Quinoa
- Gluten free bread with butter or peanut butter
- Organic vegan soups (you will have to check labels on these but there are some squash, tomato etc that are dairy and gluten free)
- Homemade chili

I agree about the basic, whole, unprocessed foods. And there is a supplement you can give her that is gluten/sugar/dairy free and will make up for nutrient deficiencies. And most adults AND kids have deficient diets no matter what they eat. I've had great results working with people (adults & kids) who had Lyme as well as other tick-borne illness (Babesiosis, Erlichiosis, etc.) - happy to have you talk to them.

What does she like to eat? Maybe you can make these things from scratch. For example you can look up "dairy free, gluten free pizza recipe". Do some reading online on webpages that specialize in dairy free, gluten free recipes and you will come up with lots of good ideas.

My daughter had Lymes disease too. My daughter was on an antibiotic (amoxicillin) every 8 hours for 28 days though and she didn't need a special diet. Is your daughter on an antibiotic too?
