Hi Mamas-

One of my good friends is getting married (and moving away, waaaaa). She and her mother are going to make her dress together, but they are having trouble finding patterns. Does anyone know of any websites, books or resources they could use to find a wedding dress sewing pattern?

I can’t even stitch loose buttons on shirts, so I am NO help to her in this department!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My mom & I got the fabric, notions, and pattern for my dress 9 years ago in Philly! TONS of great fabric & the patterns are available there so you can get great high quality fabric at a good price with the pattern in hand.

If they can make the trip to Philly, the Fabric Row section of town (on 4th street, runs for a few blocks south of South St.) has several excellent fabric stores where you can find really wonderful fabric and advice on patterns from really experienced staff. Make a day of it on a Saturday and you won't be disappointed. I haven't shopped for patterns at these stores, but I know several of them sell patterns, and there are a few stores that are specifically devoted to bridal stuff (there's bridal fabric and trimmings in their windows, I presume they must have patterns as well). Overall the fabric choices are much, much better than you'd ever find at a JoAnn. Good luck!!!

When I made my mother's dress for her second wedding we went through the patterns and got a few that would work together to piece together the dress that she wanted (I designed it from her description). www.simplicity.com has some patterns in their special occasions section that would work for a wedding dress. There are also some patterns that would work in the costume section if she wants a more vintage style dress. I do know that if you sign up for Joann Fabrics email list you can get coupons and check for sales. At least once a quarter they have a sale on all simplicity patterns for 99 cents. I always stock up during those sales. There are also some books on Amazon that might help. I hope this helps.

Vogue patterns are awesome. Finding a nice fabric might be the tricky part. I hear there are on line fabric options, though I have not yet explored them personally. Good luck.

Here's a link that has additional links in it:

(Just thought I would mention this... My mother made me a prom dress 20 years ago... Even back then, when she factored in the time it took to sew it, plus the cost of the fabric (high quality tafetta and satin) and materials (stays, crinoline, zipper, thread, buttons, etc.), she realized we could have bought a dress at a department store for about the same price. Hopefully, their sewing their own dress more for the sentimental value and not just for cost-savings.)

Any fabric store should have catalogs they can look through and buy/order the pattern....Joanne Fabrics, Michaels, etc.

I made my wedding dress from a renaissance costume pattern from Simplicity. You should be able to go to Simplicity or McCalls online and browse patterns.
