I think for the top part you should just do a white hanes t shirt. Rolled up the sleeves and a black leather jacket. I am a big fan of the movie Greese and that is what they wear.
Hi Mamas:
I need to dress my boy for a "Sock Hop" this weekend on a tight budget and not much time to run around trying to collect stuff. I feel clueless about what to do, but am thinking about the following:
Jeans cuffed at the bottom to make them highwater (slightly), white socks, black shoes, belt, white t-shirt, hair "greased" and parted on the side...
I am having trouble with the above-the-waist part of the set... what did they wear????
Any and all suggestions are appreciated! My guy tends to get overwhelmed and anxious that he doesn't look "just right"...
Thanks

HI L.,
A white T shirt with a leather vest will be perfect. See if you can find a motorcycling friend who may have a vest.

You can't go wrong with a white tee shirt!! Oh and if you go to Payless Shoe store you may get lucky and find an inexpensive pair of converse. My son looked great with his and it only cost $10
How about a short-sleeved plaid button-down, maybe with a cardigan or sweater vest if you have one available?
Check the picture galleries on this site for ideas! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/happydays.html
You actually sound like you have it all planned out fine.. his nervousness about it may be making you loose confidence about it ... afterall he doesnt really know that you may have watched The Fonz on Happy Days.. :)
A plaid button down collared shirt open and untucked would finish his outfit off just right.

Hi~
go online (EBAY, google...) and type in sock ho pcostume and you can at least see photos to get yo uon your way.
My infant was a T-Bird from GREASE along with his Pink Lady sisters for Halloween. It was easy-he had a leather jacket with the white tshirt, greased hair (kinda') and the jeans with white socks.
Good luck
L.,
I did a similar costume for Halloween '07. My daughter wore a poodle skirt and my son wore cuffed jeans, Chuck Taylor sneakers, a white t-shirt and a black leather jacket. I picked up the jacket at Burlington Coat Factory for $20. I used a little hair gel to grease his hair back and it was a great look!
If you want, google images of The Outsiders movie . . . there are some good photos you can steal ideas from.
Good luck . . . he will look great!

Plain white t-shirt (tight). Possibly a short-sleeved, unbuttoned plaid (not flannel) shirt with a collar. Try the local Goodwill.
Don't forget the long, skinny black comb in the back pocket!
Google Happy Days or the Lavern and Shirley Show. There should be some cast photos.
Lordy I'm old!
I agree, a fairly well fitted (tighter) white t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up with something cuffed to look like cigarettes... but maybe that's too controversial?
also, he should carry a big black comb in his back pocket for "fixing" his hair like "the fonz"!!! am i right ladies?
maybe show him an old show of happy days, if you can find one... or show him the pics you find online... that might help his confidence?
I am an original 'sockhop' participant...the guys wore plain white t-shirts, sometimes a leather jacket...the hair was in a style called the "duck's ass" (pardon me!), which was gelled and up in a big wave in front...sides greased back...kind of a 'Fonzie' look for the cool ones...otherwise, plaid (madras) button down shirts with trousers or jeans...hope this helps...what fun!
Hi. You're on the right track. I lived it in the fifties lol. Guys were of two types - the black leather jacket guys and the preppies who wore white dress shirts with very starched collars and cardigan sweaters or letter sweaters with their high school letter on them. My brother was a preppie and he always wore a dress shirt, chinos, loafers, and his letter sweater. He had lots of dress shirts and they weren't all white but most were solid colors. Think of the two types as Fonzie and Richie on Happy Days. They were pretty authentic-looking. And don't forget the pennies in the loafers which were shined every week.
If not a leather-ish jacket, then a denim jacket. Like the old Wrangler ones. Think James Dean....
A very simple idea is to use a white tee shirt with the sleeves rolled up and either a pair of black pants or jeans. White socks are a must. Slick his hair back Elvis style. This get up should cost you nothing except possibly the hair goop.
Good Luck.

Sounds like you have it all there. I don't see anything missing. But you could go to good will and see if you can find him a black leather jacket type thing. Think the movie Grease and there you go.
I automatically thought of a tight white T-Shirt. If you can, rent "Grease", the one with John Travolta. They look great in that and your son may think it's cool too and more agreeable to wear them.
Good luck!

L.,
That actually sounds like a great outfit for a sock hop...at least what I know of them. Good job.

Seems to me like you have it all figured out. Don't forget to roll the t-shirt sleeves a little, and the black comb for the his back pocket. You might also try to get your hands on a plain, black leather jacket in his size. Sounds like a lot of fun!
The only thing I can suggest is to check out the sock hop part of the movie Grease. It may give you more ideas.
I think that is perfect! Do you have a bomber-type jacket? Black or brown? I think that would be perfect. Just think about Danny Zuko in Grease! That is exactly what they wore. Or even the Fonz on Happy Days! Good luck.
How about a white t-shirt with the sleeve rolled-up around a small box of "nerds" candy and/or a long-sleeved button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled & tails out in the back. He will look "sweet"! :)
L.,
Your outfit sounds great. You could add a jeans jacket over the white t-shirt, if you have one. If you look at the old Happy Days TV show, the guys wore button down shirts and sweaters (some with collars). You could probably use a polo shirt instead and get a similar look. The Fonz always wore jeans with t-shirt and his leather jacket.
Hope this helps.
Just take a look at "Grease"! I used to host a little 50's day in my kindergarten classroom... I suggested that the boys wear jeans just as you described and a simple white t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up to show off those muscles (no pack of cigarettes as was common!). They carried a black plastic comb in their back pockets to keep their hair in place. If you're looking for a layer try a jean jacket or leather-look jacket with or without some type of logo on the back (think T-Birds from Grease). Another option is a simple cardigan with a "varsity letter" of his choice made out of felt - cut out a solid color letter and then place on a white piece and cut slightly larger to make the true vasity letter feel! Good luck - tie a scarf around your neck or hair when you bring him to complete the 50's look! :)
Hi L.,
I'm almost sure they use to wear leather jackets or bomber jackets,I hope I helped a little.

White t shirt. Easy !
have fun !
try finding a "letterman" sweater. one of the cream with a big red letter on the side. this is what i think with the term sockhop.
if you cant find one-make one. take a button up sweater, cut out the first letter of his name in a felt fabric, sew on the edges (just tack it on so it wont ruin the jacket.).
hope this helps,
K.
