My hubby and I have a very close friend who is a multi-millionaire who is getting married this fall. Hubby is in the best man and we're having a hard time finding a cool wedding gift, yet within our tiny budget. Our friend is so generous. He's constantly showering us with expensive and elaborate gifts, for no reason at all. It could be a Wednesday in June and he'll push a gift on us of which he sometimes will tell us he's going to throw away unless we take it. He's given us gifts like trips to Mexico and Lutsen (with he and his fiancée), laptop computers, flat screen HD TV., bottles of expensive wine and Dom Perpignan Champagne and multiple trips to the most expensive restaurants in the cities of which I'm certain the bills are over $3000.00. We've turned away many gifts as they are too elaborate and our hearts and minds can't take the guilt of knowing that we will NEVER be able to reciprocate for all his generosity. (We have reciprocated in many other ways, like shoveling their property when they're out of town, helping with whatever when they ask for it, and we give them lots of game food of which they love but are not big hunters so that has been a fun way to reciprocate a little.) Knowing that personal possessions’ mean the most to him, we were thinking of staying off the gift registry and getting something cool and different. They are outdoors people and enjoy short weekend vacations about twice a month. (No kids yet but will begin trying after the wedding) We were thinking of spending about 300.00 and giving them something like a skydiving trip, or hot air balloon ride, etc. They've already done parasailing, dog sledding, deep sea fishing, and some of the more common adventures. This is a great source of knowledge and I'm hoping some of you have some great ideas. We even thought of buying a tree for them, but we're certain that they will build a new home or move to one of those cool old mansions on Summit Ave after the marriage. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got some great ideas from some friends outside of Mamasource. We've decided on either a Ballon Ride or a Sky Diving trip would be fun and a memorable adventure. We might even go with them and make it a group trip. :)

You definitely have great ideas. I have also heard that you can "buy" name a star after someone, maybe buy two for each of them. Another idea that I always love is to make a donation in their name to a charity or issue that is dear to their heart, ex: zoo/animal shelter by sponsoring an animal, a local food shelf, a children's organization (a great one is Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery), a health organization like Children's Cancer Research Fund, maybe buy a brick from some organization building, the list goes on...it sounds like they have everything, this could be a nice way to give back to others on their behalf...GOOD LUCK!

Hi P.,

What about making a scrapbook for the couple? Even if you don't normally scrapbook, the local Archiver's stores offer classes. With your hubby being best man, i'm sure you will be attending many pre-wedding functions where you can take lots of pics. Than take pics at the wedding and reception. Yes, they will have a professional photographer, but your book would be personalized and would mean a lot to them. You can buy nice scrapbooks, stickers, and stuff at your local Wal-Mart for much less than the scrapbook store. It might be worth a trip to Archiver's (there's one at MOA and one in Rosedale that I know of) to talk to them about the classes and getting started. I think that would be a wonderful momento of the occasion. (There are even pages you can buy that are already decorated and all you do is add the pics.)

Hi P.,

Great ideas that you have already :)

You said that personal possessions mean the most to him...

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I wound up going to 10,000 Villages on Grand and Victoria in St. Paul. It carries Fair Trade items from around the world. It is a wonderful opportunity to purchase something special and unique for someone who has just about everything. My friend loves books and elephants, so I purchased elephant book ends for them...

Or have a special Bible verse, mantra, phrase, quote, etc and their wedding date done by a professional artist into a unique piece of artwork or calligrapher into a unique piece. Typically these run more if they are specially commissioned, but usually beautifully done. Michael's does framing for a very reasonable price, and you can find coupons online or in the paper for framing.
Judy Dodds is a great local TC calligrapher and artist who has done many pieces for my family. Beautifully done...

Hope this helps!

Blessings,
G. H.

I know you already have some ideas but I thought I would throw this out there anyway. How about a cooking class for the couple. My husband took one at Cooks of Crocus Hill or something like that and you get to eat your creation. The other thing I thought of was what about a gift certificate to a cool art gallery. Thaat way they can get something artistic and meaningful that they like.

P.,
How about taking pictures at the wedding (candids), or a movie? You could ask couples for advice for the new couple in a video interview. You could make a digital photo collage for them to play at their wedding, set to music. I would do something meaningful and don't worry what you spend.
