We made the decision to have a baby. I am 32 years young. I have always had High Cholesterol and weight 150 lbs. I have a previous child 14 years old that was premature 3.5 months. So I am a little nervous now. My sister has had all her kids premature. I am looking for information on a good insurance to get, find a great Doctor that can deal with the premature situation, and possibly do the midwife deal.
Right now I am clueless to what to do. At least I have 2 hospitals picked out (Baylor in Garland and Medical Center of Plano). Whatever help you can tell me I am all ears.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went last week and toured the Birth & Woman's center. I like it and I am choosing that place. Baylor of Dallas is right around the corner of the Birthing center so that is very reassuring if I go into premature labor. Also the Birth Center has Doctor's that I can transfer to immediately if there are any problems.
I am still working on the insurance situation but almost have it resolved. I find it odd that maternity is not available for individual insurance but you can get it in full time employment only. How have people in my situation paid for it before?

Unfortunately, individual health insurance plans don't cover pregnancy. The only way to get coverage for that is through employer provided plans. One option would be to look for a part-time job that provides benefits. Some companies (like Starbucks) provide benefits to part-time employees. Otherwise, you'll need to find a doctor that will workout a payment plan with you. www.geonlineservice.com has a program called CareCredit that will let you pay for medical/dental expenses through their credit plan. That way you could at least pick your own doctor. Good luck!

hi A.,

i had my little girl at medical center in plano. she was a preemie and had to be in the nicu for a while. they were absolutely wonderful there. i would definitely recommend them.

as far as dr, do you mean OBGYN or a pediatrician?

by ob was dr dennis eisenberg in plano. he was excellent with me. and with her for the short time he was responsible for her. her pediatrician is dr ross finkleman near presby dallas and he is really great with her too.

im not sure if those help at all, but i know the fear of a preemie baby. good luck to you! i hope everything goes well.

See if your insurance will cover a Perinatologist - they deal with high risk pregnancies. I would think you would qualify as high risk with the previous early delivery. I think age (35) will also qualify you. I know my Peri's receptionist kept pushing why I needed to come there when trying to make an appointment...although I'm sure there are some Peri's who will not bat an eye.

MCP has a level III NICU, which I believe is the highest level. Presby Plano also has a level III NICU. I have not had to use either of these NICU's, but I've heard good things about them.

If you're wanting a midwife experience, I would suggest The Birth & Woman's Center in Dallas. www.birthcenter.net. I had both my kiddos there and it was a wonderful experience. Compared to the cost of a hospital birth it's pocket change. On average, the cost of JUST THE BIRTH, without complications at a hospital is $10,000. But, at the birth center, your entire care from all your check-ups, the birth and a 2-day, at home check-up, a 10-day check-up and a 6-week check-up (both you and baby) costs $4300. Most was covered under my insurance, but they will work with you with a payment plan if you need it. They always have 2 OB's on-call at Baylor Dallas (excellent hospital) when a mom is coming in just in case you would need to be transferred. If you go into labor early (before 35 weeks) you will have to have the baby in the hospital, you won't be able to have it at the birth center. Birth and Woman's is in the "backyard" of Baylor Dallas. It's on Swiss Ave, the next street over. It literally takes less than a minute to get you to the front door of the labor and delivery area, which would be just enough time to get a room ready for you and the OB to your room. Now, if you do need to have at the hospital, get an insurance that will cover those expenses, just in case. If you have to get individual insurance and it's not with you or your husband's company, it will be more expensive if you get a policy that has a low deductible, and all the bells and whistles.
Now, to the real question that will help with all these decisions...premature birth. The fact that you have high cholesterol at age 32 suggests to me that you do not get enough Omega-3's. This nutrient is not only for heart health, but has been shown to prevent premature birth. I would suggest 2000mg of fish oil per day. If you choose to get it over the counter Carlson's is truly the best. Because we are entering into the winter months, Cod Liver is the best because it has more vitamin D, which most likely you are lacking as well (85% of the population is severely deficient). Start taking both now. If your doctor has put you on cholesterol lowering drugs, these will severely lower you chances of getting pregnant, (cholesterol is the precursor to all your reproductive hormones) and also have very harmful to the fetus. Talk to your doctor about that.
I know this is a lot of info, but if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly at ____@____.com. I wish you many blessings in having your little miracle!!

Good morning, A.,
You should check out the Birthing Center in Allen and talk to the staff there. They have midwives there who could answer all your questions and help you know what to expect. They have a really nice facility and a great reputation.
Good luck!
