My daughter is 4 and has been potty trained for 2 years. She seems to have problems at night when she wets herself. It has gotten so bad that I've had to put a pull up on. She knows to go to the bathroom and has a night light to see her way but, never gets there or doesn't even attempt to. I try not to give her anything to drink after a certain time at night. I have tried all I know of at this point but, nothing seems to work. I would really appreciate any advice I could get.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. I am not so concerned about this anymore. It seems like a very common problem. I will keep the pull ups on her and keep watching her. I'm sure with time she'll be fine.

Hi A.,
I to had the same problem with my daughter. Now that she is 15 found out why shy wouldn't go to the bathroom. She was scared to go in the hall when everyone was asleep. She remembers wetting herself. We have talked about this. She told me she wanted me to go to the bathroom with her, but was afraid I would get mad if she woke me. Ask her to call your name and you will go with her. Maybe that will help. Hope this helps!!!!

hi A.,
there is an amazing product that you can buy online, from starchild labs, called the bedwetting alarm. i finally tried it at the suggestion of my pediatrician, (my son was SIX years old, and fine during the day, but still wet the bed at night..and too old for pull-ups!) i had to put tape over the speaker, because it scard him when it went off, but it worked magic..within about two weeks, he stopped wetting the bed, and hasn't done it since. check it out online, i think it would solve your problem if i could solve ours. the move may have caused the regression, but this would lessen the time for her.

I have a 6 year old son that is wearing goodnites (he leaked through pull ups). One afternoon I told a friend that he still wet the bed at night and that I was going to let him grow out of it. She was so pleased to hear that, she was a bed wetter until the age of 8 and was made to feel ashamed about it. I certainly don't want that for my child. I explain to him that some kids bodies develop differently and he will stop eventually. He has no issues and is fine with it. Bed wetting can also be hereditary. I have a brother who wet his bed until he was 10, my husband and his brother were both bedwetters.
On a visit to the doctor last week (he had strep) I asked the doctor about it and I was reassured that it was not a problem and if it hasn't stopped by the age of eight then they will look into.
So just relax and let her be a kid.

Best of luck.

I can only tell you my friend went through this with her daughter and was told by her doctor that this is not uncommon... that they don't consider it an issue until they're around 7 or so... that some kid's bodies are just not equipped to stay dry through the night. I guess that's not a big help... mine did not have this problem and stayed dry all night close to when they were trained by day, but I can tell you I didn't "do" anything to make it happened... just happened.

My daughter is 4 1/2 and still in a pull up at night. I would never have thought to even be concerned about this. It will happen when she is ready. No need to pressure her. I think all the gadgets and gimmicks are a waste of time, money and energy. Maybe if she's an adult and still wetting the bed I'll be sorry for not intervening. She desparately wants to wear underwear at night. We've made a deal that when she wakes up five mornings in a row dry, then she try the underwear. So far, two is her record. However, it is her internal motivation that keeps her trying. I think if she was being pressured to stay dry she would feel like she has failed us somehow. I'm sure she'll get there soon enough and I bet your daughter will also. So my advice, just relax and don't worry about it.

I have five children under age 10. Two of them wet their beds until ages 8 and 9. (One actually still does occasionally). Two of them never wet the bed once they were out of diapers. (One is still in diapers). Bed wetting has to do with the development of neural pathways in the brain. It also has a genetic component. There is nothing you can do to make the brain develop differently. I suggest you do pull ups and try really hard not to make a big deal about it. There is nothing she can do about it, no matter how many times you wake her up in the night, and limiting fluids doesn't help. You will only make her feel bad if you pressure her. Be discreet and treat it like a non-issue. How you handle this can really affect her self esteem.
