I have a 3 year old son who is very smart and very stubborn. Ever since he was a little baby, he has HATED to have his toe nails cut. Finger nails he is fine with. I have tried everything I can think of. I've tried waiting until he falls asleep and cut them then, but he always wakes up. I've tried rewarding him if he is good when he has his nails cut. I've had him practice on a doll. But to no avail, he screams, cried, wiggles and thrashes about and I have to have 2 people hold him down while I cut them! I'm at the end of my rope with this. HELP!

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my daughter now I let her "help" me cut them she holds my hand and helps me cut them, it works great.

My son too hates his nails cut, someone (not sure who) taught him to bite his nails. I do it after he takes a bath or shower when the nails are softer, hold him down and just do. I rather fight the screaming and kicking then watch him attempt to chew the nails.

My daughter used to hate this as well. One day I tried it while she was in the tub and she didn't mind it nearly as much. She is usually in a good mood in the tub. Another good time for us is when we are clipping the dogs nails as well. Once she sees that everyone has to do it (even if you are a dog) she is less reluctant. Good Luck!

My 2 year old isn't real bad about this, but have you tried distracting him with a favorite video (Jacob adores the baby einstein videos, your son might have outgrown them though) It sounds like he's ticklish since it's just his feet. Maybe if you tried using an old pair of thick socks with the toes cut off. His feet wouldn't be quite as sensitive to the touch then. Just some suggestions. Good Luck!

my son use to have a problem with me cutting his fingernails and toenails. and i realized that he needed to keep his attention on something more entertaining. sometimes i will let him hold my cell phone and he likes that. or i will pop in a blues clues movie while i trim his nails. as long as he has his attention on something more entertaining he lets me trim. i also will give him a sucker while i trim his nails too. and then when i am all done i will say "you are a big boy!" and he gets all happy.

Wow I went through this with my son when he was a toddler. We ended up clipping them when he was asleep. It was just easier and as he got older and he let go of the control the problems escaped. Keeping him busy playing while your clipping one hand is helpful too. Turn it into a game..

Hi. I have the same issue except my 2 1/2 year old hates both his hands and toe nails cut. Sometimes the only thing I can do is file them with an emery board...with his help of course. It's not a perfect solution but at least he's not cutting himself with his claws anymore.
