Need Help with What forMula to Use

I have a 3 month old I breastfed for 2 months until my milk dried up.While I was breast feeding she was diagnosed with lactose sensitivity. After my milk dried up her doctor recommended similac sensitive similac alimentum and gerber sootheI tried her on the similac sensitive and she did fine with it. After being on it two weeks I had to get WIC and they wouldn't pay for the similac sensitive because they said the Gerber soothe was equivalent to the sensitive. She did fine on the soothe for a few days then she would throw up almost all the formula she had just ate she started getting congested and having alot of mucous. She has been congested having alot of mucous in her nose and has even had mucous in her spit up a few times. Her doctor recommended for me to put her back on the similac sensitive if I could find a way to afford it. I started her back on the sensitive 4 days ago. She did great on it the first day but now she spits up alot after every feeding has extremely bad gas has been constipated her stomach has been tight been very fussy and gets irritable while being fed. What other formula can I try or what can I do until I can get her in to see the doctor in 2 days? I have also tried similac alimentum but she would throw up immediately after feeding.

Trying different formulas can cause discomfort and gas if switched on/off fast. I would continue with the Similac sensitive until you can visit her Dr. Again. It could be she also has Reflux or allergy.

Don't feed too fast, and ensure you stop to burp often. Check to make sure the bottle isn't filled with air either, as this can cause same symptoms.

That's all the advice I know as I haven't had an infant in 10 years! Good luck sweetie.

The constipation can be an issue that will need to be addressed by Dr. I would call Office or nurse for advice on the constipation.

I think Rae gave you some excellent suggestions below.

I am not familiar with WIC, but I would document The difficulties the baby is having - times, amounts of formula, specific reactions etc. I would bring that with me to a doctor's appointment, and see if the doc can write a medical note for WIC (or even your health insurance company) that mandates a particular formula as a 'medical necessity'.

There is more going on than sensitivity to lactose?. Are you sure the diagnosis is sensitivity and not intolerance? The symptoms you describe can be caused/increased by other conditions. I urge you to stop changing formulas. That in itself can increase gas and cause constipation. Don't change formulas when baby has a diagnosis and is having difficulty without talking with the doctor.

Doctor can write a prescription so that WIC will give you the formula he prescribes. Feeding baby is more complicated today because medicine has more information and experience than back in the day when mom's figured things out for themselves. Work with the doctor.

Tell the doc you need him to write a prescription for the specific formula your infant needs then take it to the health department and if they won't fill it have them call your doc. If the other formula isn't working they have to fill the doc's prescription.

The doc should know how to get this handled.
