Need Ideas for Outdoor Christmas Tree Decorations for Cub Scouts

My son's den is making weather proof outdoor Christmas decorations for a Christmas tree at the zoo. The den leader wants us to come to tomorrow night's meeting with "lots of ideas for ornaments". I have no good ideas as I am not crafty at all. I looked online and could only find pinecone bird feeders and ornament ideas. Does anyone have any other great ideas that wouldn't be too hard for 6 yr old boys to help make? Thanks so much in advance from this un-crafty mama!

What can I do next?

pinecones sound fun,

Oranges with cloves stuck in them and a ribbon stick pinned on

you can glue wagon wheel macaroni noodles to gether and sprinkle with glitter or spray wtih white paint, but they will sort of disolve eventually.

pinecones with glitter glued on.

You know frozen concentrated juice? you can take the metal end circles off and punch a hole in the end and string them, maybe paint them first and then spray a sealer over it.

good luck this is super hard,

have you tried pinterest.com?

I would find out if the zoo has an expectation that the ornaments be all-natural or at least biodegradable--? A lot of ideas here are cute but possibly not appropriate for something that will be exposed to squirrels and birds. I don't like the thought of straight pins and sequins where there are going to be animals (and possibly small kids around the tree at times too). Do have the den leader check whether the zoo is OK with anything or whether the zoo would prefer things like pinecone bird feeders; suet cakes strung on yarn (birds later can take the yarn to use in nests), oranges with a few cloves stuck into them in patterns; apples done the same way; and other edible or natural ornaments. It may even be that the zoo does NOT want such ornaments because they'll attract more squirrels and birds, but is great with what folks are suggesting here. However, I really would check first!!

When we were kids, we made ornaments out of colored sequins/beads and small styrofoam balls. I think we used short/small pins to stick them into the styrofoam. Some of them were quite beautiful...
My mom did one (I still remember it) with rows of color (like a rainbow) divided by rows of small pearl beads.

Then you use a piece of yarn or rick-rack (sp?) to make the hook hanger.

Here's a link to a picture of the type of sequins:

I don't know if this would work, but what about mod-podge? It SEEMS (once again, I don't know) like it would be weather proof. You could get some inexpensive ball ornaments and mod podge pictures of animals on them or something.

ETA: I remember perler beads!! :) I had those when I was a kid.

We did popcorn garland which could be interspersed with berries of some sort.

I can't think of many other ideas, that's a tough one!

For our outdoor tree we also make it a birdfeeder so we will take larger pine cones and "stuff them" with peanut butter and also pine cone with suet and then roll in bird seed. Birds and squirels really like these idea. Other idea that we have used popsicle sticks, painted and then modge poged.

Use things like:
Buttons
styrofoam egg cartons
Acorns
Yep, pinecones
bottle caps
Raffia
Styrofoam balls
yarn
-Plastic cups and decorate the outside of it by gluing glitter on it. Poke a hole in the middle to attach a hanging string loop.
-String cut up drinking straws with yarn, and intersperse it with plastic caps (you can make holes in the plastic caps with a hole puncher or nail, in order to string it).
- use used/old CD's or DVD's and attach a string loop to it.
- use foil pie pans and cut shapes out of it and attach a hanging string to it with yarn. And/or glue glitter on it too for sparkle.

Use Sharpie permanent pens to decorate it, and things like glue and glitter. Easy.

Hmmm, this is kind of hard. What about large styrofoam balls that can be painted?? I would use non-washable paint so that if it rains or snows it won't come off. You can string some yard through the top so it can hang.

What about doing something with milk jugs or other plastic bottles. You could probably fashion some sort of ornament out of those or hot glue a bunch together in a radial star shape for the top of the tree.

You could use foil to make garland. Cut it up into strips and link them together or make giant foil balls and string them together.

I don't think these ideas are my greatest, but the weatherproof element really makes this a challenge!

Use perler beads to make an ornament! You can get them at Walmart. The link below is to Walmart for a bucket of 22,000 perler beads for $19.00.
