Need Ideas for the Big 13 Birthday Party

My son is turning 13 this summer and I'd like to do something special for him with a group of his friends-- girls and boys. He's not into sports. He loves computers, books, gaming and tv, but none of these things are conducive to a party with friends. He absolutely turned down a DJ party at the rec center. He likes the idea just okay of having a BBQ-- but how do I entertain another bunch of 12 year olds, especially considering my child's interests? They're far beyond what I used to do for my kids.

What can I do next?

Well, being that the things he loves are mainly sedintary, how about going with the barbeque idea and adding games to it? Like filling two suitcases with clothes and two kids have to put them all on (over their own clothes, of course) and then take them all off...the first one done wins! The funnier the clothes, the better. You can put names in a hat if there are lots of kids and draw names of who does what game/activity. Put an M&M in the bottom of a pie dish, fill the dish with whipped cream. Make two then have a race...the kids have to find the M&M...no hands! Whoever finds it first wins! I bet with these sort of activities he would have a total blast... these kinds of games get everyone laughing... the partipants AND the audience. Good luck!

Here are a few websites with really fun ideas for older kids. I used to teach middle school kids, so I looked through the suggestions, and many seem like things this age group would enjoy.
The first link had two catagories that looked good: Thinking games and Teenager games. http://www.eventwise.co.uk/asp/partyanimals.asp
This second one is a link to a mystery game party idea
http://www.kids-mysteries.com/
Also, just giving them time to socialize, listend to music and "hang out" is a good idea as well.
Your kids are lucky to have such a hard working, caring mom like you. Enjoy the party!

A little about me:
I have two children, oldest is 11. I work from home, teaching and training other women to do the same. I too am lucky to have amazing children, and love hearing from other people who feel the same.

G.,

My son just had his 13th b-day party. We went bowling and then had a sleep-over. The guys bowled and then video games at the bowling alley. We did pizza and presents before bowling and cake at home afterwards. It is was so fun. The guys were not the best bowlers so we had the bumpers. They discoverd 'bumper bowling'. =) If that doesn't work. Then a pool/water party is fun as long as the weather cooperates. The YMCA (we go Southwest)does pool parties and it is an indoor pool so who cares about the weather.
Hope you and your son have a great b-day.
M.
