I am relocating to Tulsa ...probably the Broken Arrow area...very soon. I have a 13 year old son who has ADHD, Bi-polar and Asperger's Syndrome and I want to find the right middle school and eventually the right high school to fit his special needs. Can anyone provide me with information about schools that will work closely with parents and an IEP?

What can I do next?

Hi W.,

I just relocated to OK from AZ. We moved in August. I also have a 14 year old with ADHD and also OCD. make sure you bring your records from the other school with you. They won't do anything unless they have the records showing your child is ADHD. And it has to be from the school...Catoosa schools have been very good for our Sammi. She is really doing quite well. You can contact me at ____@____.com or ____@____.com may be changing internet soon also. P. Baker

I am so glad I found this site and this post. My daughter and I are moving to Tulsa and trying to decide where to live. My job is in Broken Arrow so I naturally was looking to find somewhere close to there. I think it will be worth the extra in renting cost now that I have seen this so she can attend their IEP. Thank you!!

Hi W., I've been in Tulsa my kids' whole lives. My youngest (8th grade) is also under an IEP. Broken Arrow is your best choice in Oklahoma for special education ... ESPECIALLY for anything under the Autism spectrum!!!
When you move to Broken Arrow, make sure you are NOT NOT NOT in the Union District. Part of the Broken Arrow City Limits are in Union School District.
They have a great school district, but their special education has a less than stellar reputation, and have left many parents battle worn and weary ...they also are NOT good with autism.
My son, qualified for an IEP when he was 3, and we had to file to due process in Union TWO times to get it! We did not get one willingly from Union until he was in the SECOND GRADE.
The Middle School and IEP's are so bad, we wound up pulling him out to homeschool him until we move to Broken Arrow (later this month) We actually had a SPECIAL ED TEACHER tell us that they do not modify for any one child, but modify for the whole classroom....
So PLEASE ... make sure you are not in the Union District when you move to Broken Arrow, make sure your home is in the Broken Arrow district!!!

Welcome to the area! My son will be starting in Broken Arrow middle school in December. Broken Arrow has a special education Parents Association (Union has no such organization) you should hear something about it after your son starts in school.

I just wanted to second that Broken Arrow has a really good IEP program. I have a friend who teaches in the union district but sends her son to Broken Arrow because he has Cerebral Palsy. I'm not sure if any of the middle schools are better than others with that. There is only one high school and they have a great program. Oak Crest has the best elementary school IEP program. I think it feeds into Centenial Middle school.

Hello W.! My nephew is autistic and attends Broken Arrow Public School. My brother and his family moved hear specificaly for the program they offer. My nephew is only in kindergarten so I'm not sure if they have upper level classes set up yet but you could certainly check into it. My family has been very pleased with the program thus far. Take care! A. charm
