Im having a baby in a month or so and we dont have a name. I have 2 boys and think this one may be a girl. We are Italian and my boys have Italian names so we need to stay with that theme. I dont want Isabelle or Sophia only because they have become so popular. Id rather have something not so common. Any suggestions?? I have look on the internet but was wondering if anyone thought of something we havent yet.

So What Happened?

My boys are Angelo and Rocco after our grandfathers. Our dog is Lucy, so thats out. My parents dog is Luca. I have a cousin Vincenza. We like Valentina, Caterina, Gemma, Natalia but dont like the short names like Val and Nat. I guess we could correct anyone who tries to shorten the name we pick. Im really undecided....keep the suggestions coming. Theyre are some great ones i didnt think of. Thank you all!

I know you've gotten a ton of responses, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. My oldest daughter's name is Stella Lucia-directly translated from Italian means star light. My 3rd daughter's name is Valentina-just a beautiful name that is also used in Italy. My middle daughter's name is Lola, which is Spanish, but sometimes used in Italy. We (not me) are also very Italian, my husband and girls speak Italian at home. Congratulations on the new baby!

Paola (a form of Paul)
Josephine (this is a family name for me, so many with the middle name and variations..it was my Grandmothers first name as well...several in each generation for me)
Annunziata..its a mouthful..Modern version is Nancy (weird, huh?) We have some of those too...
Gianna is pretty (we have a Giovannia/female.. its a variation of Joan...important for those Saint names needed? We grew up Catholic so all names had to have a Saint name in there. Plus we always have the middle name be after a family member...occasionally is the first name or a variation, but typically now its the middle name).
Vani...a form of Ann and another in my family as well.

I am a N. Anne...and my Grandmother was from Italy and lived with us when I was very very young...and one of my few memories of her was her calling me Vani. She never liked the "N." part of my name, I guess =) (that part is Greek derived...She would occasionally call me NICHOLA VANI (Nichola with the A would be the italian version of it and it means "victory of the people")...she was stubborn!!

Have fun!

These are some of the most popular names in my husband's family that comes from Italy.

As a side note, people generally won't shorten it if you introduce your child with the full name and if you call them by their full name. I know a James, Michael, Jennifer, etc and all go by the full name.

Good luck! Let us all know what you pick!

Daniella ( always remember a girl at school named that). Maria, Molly, Marcella, Alessandra, Antonia, Arabella, Carla, Carmella, Caterina, Celia, Donatella, Eleonora, Elisabetta, Francesca, Gabriella, Giovanna, Giancarla, Marta, Renata, Roberta, Rosanna, Rosaria, Sandra, Serafina.
A lot of them are boys names feminized. Over the years I have known someone with each of those names. I think my favorites are Giancarla, and Serafina because they are not often heard.
Boys names just in case, my favorites are Luigi, Giuseppe and Milan. (it may be the people I remember)

Love the girl names you have so far: especially Caterina and Gemma. As far as shortening a name, my son is Nathan not Nate. He will always be Nathan and if anyone calls him Nate he has no idea who they're talking to (he's 5). The only way people will shorten it is if you let them and obviously when they get their own opinion when they're like 14 it's out of your hands but as long as you are consistent in gently correcting people if needed it will stay as her given name.

Congratulations on your new baby!

I named my daughter Francesca, after my great-grandmother...I think one or two people may have mentioned the name but it seemed kind of buried in there.

One thing about choosing this name is that your daughter will almost certainly have a strong personality! I have never met a shy Francesca ; )
The other thing is that people will shorten it to all types of things: Frankie, Cessca, Fifi, Fran.... But in the end she can always come back to Francesca.... Thanks to everyone for the wonderful name suggestions!!!

Since you have gotten soooo many beautiful suggestions I will only add that maybe instead of Valentina shortened to Val, you can shorten it yourself to Tina, Caterina to Nina, Gemma is sos so cute, but very close to Emma which is out of this world popular! Natalia could be shortened to Talia rather than Nat. If you shorten it yourself people are less likely to freelance with her name. Alessandra is gorgeous and unlikely to be shortened. Syliviana is also beautiful, as well as Sylvia if somebody tried to shorten it.
My son is Patrick and only one person tries to shorten his name to Pat (which I DO NOT want my son called, AT ALL since he is named for my father who is called Pat) He's only 5 tho, so we'll see later in school and such.

We named our daughter Nicasia, in memory of my mother-in-law who was from Sicily. No one has ever heard of this name in the States, and when we visited Sicily this year, no one ever heard of it there either! Turns out it's a name from my mother-in-law's town. It's pronounced Nic ahh see a, which I prefer, because it has the soft s, but the Italian prounounciation is Nic ahh zee a. And the nickname is just as original, Nica. If I ever have another girl, which I really hope I do, her name will be Angelie, after my Italian grandmother Angela. I came up with Angelie as a way to modernize my grandmother's name, and to keep both girls' names equally unique.

Good Luck!
