hey mama's!! I am sending my son to 1st grade this year and need some ideas on what to send for lunch. He did not take his lunch to school while in Kindergarten, so this is all new to me. I am afraid he will get tired of PB&J, or ham and cheese, and lunchables are kind of expensive. He is kind of a picky eater, so getting him to eat foods he is not used to seeing (cucmbers on a sandwich)can be a little difficult. any ideas would be so greatly appreciated!! thanks in advance!
Jess

My advice is get a small thermos (you can get a cheap one at Wal-Mart for $5; not in the camping section-those are pricier, in the kitchen section). This opens up many alternatives for warmer foods (leftover pasta, mac n cheese, hot dogs, quesadillas, chicken nuggets) and immediately give you more options.

My son has taken tons of things to school for lunch. If you buy a food thermos, he could take soup, spaghetti O's, beans & rice, ravioli, meatloaf, etc

Other than that, my son takes hot dogs (toast bun so it does not get soggy and wrap in tin foil)

chicken legs
tortilla wraps
BLT's
chicken nuggets
quesadillas
pizza
loose meat sandwiches
mac N cheese

basically just about anything you have at home, can be taken to school. Advice, get extra condiments from fast food places and throw them in the lunch box when needed.

I found a website through another Mamasource question. A mom took a picture of her son's lunchbox every day for kindegarten and first grade. I got some great ideas from it. Hope this helps! http://www.flickr.com/photos/mslil65/sets/72157601755804789/

well, my first advice isn't so much specific lunch ideas as it is just general advice regarding picky eaters...
what works best in my family for those 'refusal moments' is to just nonchalantly ease up, offer alternatives, and keep offering the refused food at least 5 or 6 later occasions. more often than not for us, the picky eater in question will try it by the 3rd or 4th time and actually come around the 5th or 6th time. we've gotten our kiddos loving some pretty unusual kid fare, and it's awesome!
having said that, i do have a few lunch/snack ideas he might like...??:
-almond butter sandwiches
-carrots
-cheese sticks
-pizza
-cup of nuts
-pasta salad
-popcorn
-olives
-pancakes
-apples
-bananas
-blueberries
-quinoa
-crackers
-pears
-mac & cheese
-fried rice w/ egg
-dry cereal

HTH!

Ask him! I quarantee that no matter how attractive and creative your lunches are---if he doesn't like them, he won't eat them.
I ate pressed ham on white bread with mayo everyday for years and my sister took PB&J. My kids lived off of bolonga. Anything different, they either brought home or threw away!

check with the school before you send PB. With so many peanut allergies it is not allowed in some school districts

all I can say is thank goodness kids like consistency... I ask my kids (and I have since kindergarden) what they want for lunch, and most of the time they want the same thing day after day after day. I do provide lots of options but they usually are pretty consistent. Also my kids have a Micro that they can use (with help for the younger ones) so you might want to see if they have that available to them or not.

we do the basics
PBJ
ham
cheese
turkey (which we sometimes roll and stick with a pretzel, which they really like)
home made lunchables

more creative but usually has to be microwaved.
hot dogs
hamburgers
mac n cheese
raviolis
spaghettio's
fresh cut fruits
pizza
taquitoes
burritos

I've pretty much learned anything I can serve at home I can serve in a lunch box, just takes some some planning, another option is offer to volunteer at the school cafeteria one day and you will see lots of creative ideas!

best of luck

make your own "lunchable". cube up some ham or roll up some slices of turkey or ham from the deli (or pre-packaged), add some Ritz crackers, some cheese cubes or cheese stick and a drink. You can also make PB and J pinwheels...use a rolling pin to flatten out the bread, spread on pb and a small amount of jelly and roll up. You can then slice the roll cross-wise to make the pinwheels.

I recently had the deli slice luncheon meat and chease a bit thicker than usual, then cut them into little squares. Add a few ritz crackers and a drink and you have a "luncheable". You might add a few carrot and celery sticks too.

My kids love quesadillas in their lunch. We will have them as a meal and I make extra and put the left overs in their lunch. You can get whole wheat tortillas, which are better for the kids than the flour. The yogurt tubes are also great. You freeze them overnight and pop them in the lunch box in the am. Lastly you can put their favorite sandich ingredients in a tortilla and roll it up like a taco.

Hope that helps.

Think about his favorite foods. Let him help grocery shop and then let him help fix it every evening before going to bed. Choose alternatives to sandwiches.
Examples:
Dried or cut up fresh fruit
fresh veggies cut really small for bite size such as carrot slices, zuchinni, yellow squash, celery
Yogurt and yogurt drinks, frozen yogurt sticks and in container help keep foods cool and are fun to eat
granola and trail mix, raisins, dried plums, a few go a long way on energy
hot soups in a small thermos
different kinds of soft rools for a sandwich and nutella is great with peanut butter, kids love it.
High fiber bars, Fiber One and Kashee bars
Frozen juice also helps keep lunch cool and is a slushy by lunch time.
Remember, how often did he snack at home between breakfast and lunch or dinner time and the amount you put into his lunch may not seem so bad, then.
Dry cereal is also good with yogurt and yogurt drinks. You can make your own smoothies and put into a cold thermos and these can be full of nutrients.
My grandsons will drink a smoothie any day and I put yogurt or fruit juice, raw apple, frozen bananas, honey and ground flax seed. They don't know what all is in it and love them because they tase really good. I also add raw spinach or kale and it blends up great and taste wonderful. Put 1 cup into his cold thermos and drink the rest yourself for a quick pick me up in the mornings.
Good luck!
frozen grapes are also fun.

Some great ideas here, test out the leftovers on yourself first though. I worked at a private school for many years where parents thought they were helping changing things up. Sadly these leftovers, by lunchtime, were not very appealing looking, even to myself. Had some pretty sad and hungry kids when lunch was through.

my kids have always loved salads...even when they were little, so I would pack up a salad with a salad dressing spritzer so that the lettuce doesn't get soggy. Also, they like to have a slice of pizza wrapped up as a special lunch sometimes. I guess it depends on whether or not they like cold pizza. My kids love it.

I always include a main course (protein), carbs, fruit, and a veggie. :) Oh....and a dessert

If he likes lunchables you can make your own...buy a thick slice of ham and cube it or just pit on slices of meat, cheese, crackers and a little treat!

Here are some of the things my kids have said they want in their lunchbox:
homemade lunchables - meat, buy 1 block of cheese and cut into squares, crackers
carrots and ranch dip
celery and peanut butter dip
PB&J
bagels with cream cheese
mac & cheese (in a thermos)
hot dog (in a thermos)-put but separate and put some ketchup packets so he can make up the hot dog
pigs in a blanket (in thermos)
soup (in thermos)
pizza lunchables-pizza sauce in small container, bagel, pepperoni & cheese, they make it themselves, you could put the pizza sauce in thermos to keep it warm
turkey wrap (turkey, lettuce, tomato, wraped in a flour tortilla)

If he wants lunchables, you can make them yourself for a fraction of the price that they sell them in the store. just put whatever meats he likes in little plastic baggies with some crackers and put them in his lunch box with a Capri-sun or whatever drink he likes.

Hi! I would start out with the baics like the sandwich, fruit, yogurt chips and a small treat like a cookie or something. I have found that they see what other children are having and that sparks their interst and they usully tell you about it while you are at the grocery store or just ask them. I find this helpful and if you are any thing like me I am a sugar nazi and very particular about how much my son gets.So if he wants something that another child has but too much sugar,I give him another option and tht seems to work! Good Luck!! A.C
