Need Moms of Children Who Have Had Febrile Seizures

The same thing happend to my son in November. My husband and I were out of town and he was staying with my mom at the time of the seizure. It really freaked my mom out. She ended up calling 911 and he was rushed to the ER. Turns out it was a Febrile Seizure. I was also told that the chances of it happening again were greater now that it has happened. His doctor has told me not to let his fever get over 102. I do this by stacking his meds. I start with Tyelnol, then in two hours I check him again if it has not gone down I give him Motrin. Continue doing this and it will help. As a matter of fact I had to do this all weekend because he has an ear infection and his temp was pretty high (right at 101). The good news in all of this is that childeren grow out of this by the age of 5!

My son had a seizure at age 2 and now again at age 3. For the first one I woke him up from his nap and he was very lethargic, unresponsive, and not like himself at all. They did every test possible at the hospital and concluded he had a seizure and it was the aftermath. It took hours for him to get back to his normal self. The second I saw but it was also when coming out of a nap. His neurologist said its possible it's BRE because it's always been during or coming out of sleep. Most children grow out of it by puberty and you need 3 seizures before talking medication. We are having a 23 hour EEG this month which should give us some more answers. It is extremely scary and I try not to let it consume my life. Everytime i go to wake him up I fear he will have had another one and that's horrible to live everyday like that. I'm really working on it.

I'm the mom of a 4 yr old girl who had 2 febrile seizures. The first one she had at daycare when she was 18 months old. Scariest thing I've ever experienced in my life!!!!! She was taken by ambulance to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston (we live about 20 minutes from there), she was there about 6 hours and they let us go. They told me it could happen again, so every time she had a fever, I was a nervous wreck!!! Did the Tylenol, Motrin, routine, lukewarm bath…spent nights awake when she was sick checking on her fever… Exactly a year later, despite all my precautions, she had a 2nd one. This time, she did not come out of it for 5 hours. They did all kinds of test to make sure she was OK, again we were sent from our local hospital to Texas Children’s ICU because they were very worried about her…anyway, spent a day at the hospital and we went home. I know it can be the scariest thing to go through…but as far as we can tell, there have been no side effects of her seizures (she is very strong willed…but I think that is genetic!!!). My son had a febrile seizure when he was 1 1/2. It was terrifying, it happened in the middle of the night and I called 911. He is almost 5 now and he hasn't had any problems since. I understand your concern because it was really scary to see my son go through that but the doctor told me it's just something that their bodies do to reset themselves when a fever comes on really fast. My son was only in the hospital for a couple hours so that they could rule out any more serious problems.

It is scary, I know, first of all they say that Febrile Seizures are mostly inherited. I had 5 when I was a child, and my oldest has had 4. She had the first when she was only 9 months old then she had them about every 6 months after. She is now 5 and she hasn't had one again. They are scary!!! One minute she was running around and playing and we got in the car to go out to eat with my family and I hear a funny noise so I turn around and bam she is having a seizure. There isn't much you can do except medicate. They have these suppositories that are called Fever-All I know they have them at Wal-mart. They work really quick to get the fever down! Try them and just pray and watch. There isn't much else you can do...

I've never had that happen with neither of my children. However, when my nephew was about 2 (he's now 7)he had two in a row and was admitted to the hospital for a couple of days. He hasn't had one since that occurence.
