Need New Pediatrician in Plano

Hi Moms,

I recently changed pediatricians and am not very happy with where I landed. Anyone have a pediatrician that they absolutely love? We live in Plano on the East side and I don't want to have to go to far, but will go pretty much anywhere in the N Dallas area for the right fit. The first doctor we had was wonderful, but we had to change because my husband somehow insulted someone on the very thin-skinned staff, so despite the fact the doctor had been seeing her for her entire life we were asked to find another doctor. My husband was never even in the office - they just called him at work one day and caught him in a bad mood! Anyway, so then we switched to another office - very different practice. My daughter has been in 4 or 5 times and has never seen the same doctor twice. We have not seen "her" doctor since the initial visit. I am not happy with this. Any time you try to make an appointment because your child is sick, they first make you talk to a nurse who tries to talk you out of coming in because your child probably isn't sick enough. I'm not happy with this either. My child is a heart transplant recipient - I need better care for her than this.

I would like to find a pediatrician that is preferably female, sees her patients herself the majority of the time - I understand everyone gets a day off and I might see a different doctor that day. If I do see somebody else I want it to be a doctor - not a nurse (like they do where we currently go). I want the doctor to become familiar with my child and her condition and know who we are when we come in. This is the kind of care we used to have, so I know it exists! I also want a doctor that is very thorough with high risk patients like my daughter. If she is sick I expect tests to be run to be on the safe side, not just call me if she doesn't get better then we'll run some tests! She has hardly any immune system for goodness sake!

Do you have a great pediatrician like this? Please let me know about them. If they are at West Plano Pediatrics or North Dallas Pediatrics please don't respond. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

We like Carolyn Ashworth. She is gone one day a week, but you can request to see her when you make the appointments. ###-###-#### She is very knowledgable and has worked with a couple of complex cases that I am aware of...I am sure she has many! She is at Coit and 15th, so wouldn't be too far for you. Good luck.

We also changed pediatricians from a very "in the know" Dr. because we hardly saw her - just the nurses (among a couple of other reasons we weren't happy about)...

So we now go to Dr. Rhonda Merchant at Legacy Pediatrics - they are located near Ohio and Legacy; ###-###-####. Not sure how far of a drive that is for you though.

But what we do love is that we always see the Dr. She and another Dr. work together and have specific days they are each working there. So even if we go when my daughter is sick, we see the Dr. that is working and I appreciate that. We also appreciate that we don't feel rushed in and out, which was another reason we left the other practice.

Good luck! Fortunately living the Plano area, there should be plenty of great Drs. to choose from!

Sorry for all of the troubles that you have had. The main job of a pediatrician is the health of our children. I love Willowbend Pediatrics. I would recommend for you to take your child to Dr. Sickler or Dr. Mehendale. Both are wonderful ladies and are always pleseant to work with (as are their nurses). The offices are off of Willowbend and the Tollway. ###-###-####

We go to Legacy Pediatrics at Coit and Legacy, offices of Dr. Rhonda Merchant and her associate Dr. Suresha Mutyala. We followed Dr. followed through three locations. We absolutely love her and her staff. We started seeing her when my son was 8 mos. old. All three of my kids see her and they love going to the doctor. She takes time to answer all your questions. I can't say enough good things about her and the other members of the practice.

We love Dr. Jenelle Wong at Pediatric Specialists of Plano at Parker and Midway! She is very thorough and often does do things "just to be on the safe side" even though neither of my girls are in any way high risk. Every once in a while you can not get in to see her and have to schedule a same-day appointment with either the PA or another doctor, but they always let you choose from whoever has the openings. The nurses and office staff are always helpful and friendly as well. We have been happy with every doctor we have seen in the practice. Hope that helps and good luck with your search!

I am extremely picky when selecting a doctor...and although it's not a male and in plano...I highly recommend Ernie Fernandez in Dallas. On Walnut Hill Lane & Greenville Avenue. I am very cautious in terms of medications/treatments and always prefer to exhaust all natural homeopathic options first...Dr. Fernandez and i differ in this area but have never come to a confrontation. He provides an excellent, well-though-out, thorough, detailed and clear diagnosis with treatment recommendations...and then i opt to use natural treatments. Regardless, i'm very happy with him.

We use Dr. Kelly Smith in McKinney right off 75 on Eldorado. She is great. I began using her wth my who also is a high risk patient over two years ago in a different practice. She moved and we didn't see her for over 2 years, but she recalled many of her pertinent issues from memory for the nurse. I was very impressed. She has always been very responsive to our problems and has told me time and time again to have the nurse let her know that I believe she really needs ______. And she will see to it immediately. She has also taken the time to actually be the dr. on record while my daughter has been in Childrens I'm not sure if she is still doing this, but I bet she does go to Plano Childrens. Hope this helps.

I have a fabulous pediatrician that I have used for 15 years with absolute loyalty. He is the most thorough pediatrician I have ever been to. (I have 9 kids, so I have seen many. Once I started going to him, I have followed him to several offices, but for the last 11 years he has had his own practice. There are no other doctors associated with him, except for an occasional on-call weekend. He is so good, especially with babies and toddlers. I really like his staff, also. His name is Benjamin Quiroz (pronounced key-rose). He is located on Medical Drive just South of the Plano Medical Center on 15th St. His office phone number is ###-###-####. I have never had a problem getting in to see him, there are never long waits at his office, he spends an inordinate amount of time with each patient and has handled everything we have thrown at him. He has a good sense of humor and is pleasantly down to earth. I have never had a hard time getting a hold of him during after-hours, either. I don't think you would be disappointed with his personal touch.

I know you mentioned that you would prefer a female doctor, but I wanted to mention that Dr. Charles Goebel with Pediatric Specialists of Plano is phenomenal. His offices are located on the corner just northwest of Plano Presbyterian Hospital (corner of Midway and Parker). You mentioned that your daughter was a heart transplant patient and I know that he sees a patient with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (hope I spelled this correctly). He is very precautionary and thorough and if he suspects something is wrong will test for it.

We were lucky to have him as our pediatrician as our daughter developed extreme OCD overnight this past January after a bout of strep. I called his office and his nurse spoke with him immediately and they had us come in. He diagnosed our daughter with PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections). Basically the body's autoimmune system attacks the basal glanglia and causes swelling in the brain instead of attacking the bacteria. This illness is very rare and he caught it so we were able to have access to proper treatment.

Each doctor in the office works 4 days a week. I believe that there are 3 or 4 doctors on staff. We usually get in to see our doctor but if it happens to be his day off, we are always able to see one of his associates and they are phenomenal as well!

His office number is ###-###-####.

We've been using Dr. Monica Herrera, of Windhaven Pediatrics (in the Presby Hosp. of Plano building)for over 10 years -- I think we were some of her first patients. She now has several other MDs on staff: two other females and one male, and a female Adolescent Medicine specialist (that my son & daughter both really like). Dr. Herrera's husband is a cardiologist.

We have always seen whomever we are scheduled to see, unless we have had something urgent come up -- then if Herrera isn't there, we see someone else.

Good luck!

The pediatrician we use is in North Dallas (actually Richardson) off 75 at Floyd and Arapaho. There are only 2 doctors in the practice--and both are excellent! (They each get 1 day off week.)

The man, Dr. Crow, diagnosed my son properly when the doctors at the hospital couldn't and we had already been in ICU for three days.

The female, Dr. Randles, helped me diagnose my other son with Celiac Disease. Other doctors would listen to me and kept telling me nothing was wrong (he had dropped from 90% to 4% in weight).

They NEVER make you feel bad for coming in, even if the kid just has a virus. The nurses are amazing and so nice.

Also, Dr. Randles has a young kid herself, so she is "in the ranks" with us. Dr. Crow's daughter is in college and in her 20's.

The number for the practice is ###-###-####. They also have a nurse practictioner that is wonderful and will do home visits.

Overall, they are a wonderful group of people. They are not in the newest office, but they are great! Hope this helps!
