Need New Vaccum

I just got a Dyson for Christmas and I love it. It was amazing how much it picked up in the canister the first time I used it. Just to think of all that was in my carpet before I got my new vacuum. Yuck! My mom has an Oreck and she thinks there's nothing better, and it came with a hand held vacuum also. Its super light weight and actually I just saw them at Costco yesterday! I think Sebo is the brand that my father in law prefers. I don't know much about that brand but he is a vacuum aficionado! :) Good Luck!

Love my dyson allergy and pet hair! Got it at Bed Bath & Beyond and used one of their 20% off coupons and it probably still cost $400 - $450 (with tax). But it's worth it to me, I love it! Picks up everything...best vacuum I've ever had!

Absolutely love my Dyson! Found it NEW on eBay for about $80 less than I would have paid in a store. If you find out what brand/model you want, I definitely recommend looking on eBay for new-in-the-box vacuums.

We love our Dyson! I had just vacuumed with our old vacuum, and proceeded to get a couple of canisters of dirt out with the Dyson. We've had it for 3 years with no problems. It's easy to empty and not too heavy.

Electro Lux & Kirby are top of the line. My mom has had her Electro lux for over 20 years. She raises Great Danes, so, it gets a work out.

I have a Dyson & LOVE it. It is a work-out, though. The suction power causes that. I'd like to try the "ball" model. But it cleans like the dickens.

I have a dyson. Seems to work pretty well. Would work better if I did the normal maitanance that it is supposed to have.
My sister has one too and she loves hers and so does my mother in law.

The Oreck is one of the best. I cleaned houses for over 3 years, and that was the best and light weight.

WE got married in 97 and were given a $70 Eureka upright. I still love that thing, but due to the military and being geographically separated part of the time, we had to buy a 2nd vacuum for our 2nd residence. We spent about $400 and got a Dyson in 2005 or so. It has been really good. And it sucks up EVERYTHING. It sucks up quarters, bottles of fingernail polish, etc.
Other than the belt breaking on the Eureka a few times, I have never had a problem with either vacuum.

I think the dyson animal got a good rating from consumers. Go to epinions.com and see what they say. I have a whole house vac, and it is the best I have ever used. My husband installed it. He also put in one for my daughter in the house she is building.

I have a dyson and LOVE it. It is the best vaccum I have ever owned. I have had it for going on 5 years no and it sucks like the day it came out of the box! I use the wand attachment to take the dust of the ceiling fans and lamp shades. It will suck up ANYTHING. I have to be really careful with it because I have almost taken up socks and the other day it got ahold of my husbands shoe string and tried to suck up his boot, I have to shut it off and pull the boot and string out of the vaccum!

You can subscribe to consumerreports.com and get ratings. That's how I chose our Eureka Mega Boss (I think that's what it's called). We've had it about 5 years, I think. It was about $150 at the time, not sure about now. It is a little heavy, but it sure cleans well.

I love my Dyson!!!

I have 6 kids and about 3,000 sq. ft. of carpet (even my bathrooms are carpeted!). I have had my Dyson since 2006 and it is fabulous!!! Never a single problem. I do not know the model type, but it is the purple one.

Hi, I see some people really like their Dyson! I hate mine. I have had the Dyson Animal (for cat hair) for 4 or 5 years. Is a $400 vacuum. It doesnt pick up anything larger than a piece of rice, it just pushes it around. So I have to pick up everything like cereal or peas by hand. I hate it!!! Actually thinking of replacing it with something else. I think consumer reports says it is not worth the cost.

We have a Dyson Allergy and Asthma and it works great. Makes the carpet look really good after each time I vacuum. I hope this helps.

I hear you that you are willing to spend some $, but I found that a local vaccum cleaner/sewing machine repair shop had some top name brands (that he had fixed) for nice price$. A long time ago, I bought a vacum from a door to door salesman and it has lasted a long time. When it finally broke ( like 10 years later ), I took it to the repair guy and he fixed it right up. If it breaks again, I'll likely fix it again. It's a Filter Queen and rolls on casters with a separate power head for the carpet. My house now is mostly harwood and tile, so it's not getting a whole lot of use. We use it on the area rugs and I could use it on the hardwood floor more than I do. It has three different filters and cleans the air as it blows it out. You are also supposed to be able to use it as a portable air filtering system and can leave it in a room turned on (without the hose) to filter the air. Originally, I had scented oils to use with it. My family seems to have this thing with vaccums and I remember that I used to have to sweep our carpets because the vaccum never worked. Hope you get a great new vaccum!

Dyson - we have two boxers a 3mth old and and 3yr old. We bought a new Dyson and decided to check it out. We had just swept our floors with our older vaccum which was not cheapie, that afternoon. That night we tried the Dyson and to our suprise the dirt and hair left in our carpets after just sweeping that afternoon, filled the Dyson. I am very particular about the floors with the little ones, but my mouth hit the floor when I saw what came out of our carpet! WOW! (on a side note we bought the animal Dyson, however, since then they have come out with the Dyson ball - Very cool!) Good luck with your choice!

We bought a Rainbow vacuum about 5 years ago and we still LOVE it! I think it was around $1700 at the time. We haven't had any problems with it at all. It has a tank of water that collects the dust & debris instead of a bag, so nothing ends up back in the air. Our son has dust mite allergies and we have two dogs (three when we bought it), and a cat, and it has helped tremendously. We eventually got rid of the carpet on our main floor & replaced it with hardwood. The Rainbow has an attachment for hard floors too & it's fantastic as well! The only down side to it is that it's hard to handle on carpeted stairs. You either need a strong back, or a person to help hold it. But we do LOVE it very much! You will be amazed what ends up in the tank when you dump it. Hope this helps!

Kirby is excellent but no need to spend so much money. The Oreck is a great suction but nothing fancy. I have the Dyson and love it. Great suction and bagless. Very durable. You can use a 20% coupon only at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I have an Oreck and I love it! After almost three years, I've never had to have it repaired. It only weighs eight pounds and if you order it online they will send you a handheld (with a shoulder strap) vacuum for free. I use both almost every day!

I just went through this myself. Again. For like the 8th time in 10 years. Stay away from Kenmores - I had a $500 canister kenmore progressive direct drive that had to have $100(+) worth of repairs EVERY YEAR. I did ALOT of research and came down to:
Dyson - which was too costly to repair as parts are imported and typical repairs took 3 months to receive parts, also heard from alot of owners including my DH's best friend a complete clean freak that they're great for a year then lose suction - DH's friend's wont even pick lint off the top of the carpet now,
Kirby - both of our mothers have 40/yo Kirbys but all the sales guys said that the new ones are lucky to last 5 years AND they were too tall for me, extremely heavy, and not practical with our stairs,
and the Miele Capricorn which is what I ended up getting.

I love my Miele. I've had it for three months now, still haven't had to change the self-enclosed bag due to their unique technology. It's the only vac the allergy/asthma sites all recommend (and we LOVE it for that - incredible filter!). It's the quietest, smallest, lightest vacuum I've ever had. Consumer Reports LOVED it and gave it very high ratings, tho they don't recommend them due to the price. and typically they last 20-30 years. It's the BMW of vacuums and you pay for it, but you won't be putting $100+ every year into a new vacuum or repairs. It's german engineering. It's incredible. But, a vacuum is also a very personal thing. It was the right decision for our family. I probably won't ever go back to anything else. ever.

I got mine for $30 less than the price on the website + 4 boxes of bags (said 2 years worth, but given that I havent changed a bag YET, prolly more like 4 or 5....)

We invested in a Rainbow Vaccuum at the beginning of the summer and have never been this happy! It's the best thing ever..it uses a water basin instead of bags or canisters. That way the dust doesn't fly all over the place. it has tons of attachments, and can be run as an air purifier when you're not cleaning with it. I say we "invested" because It cost us 2k...but I can almost guarantee, we'll not be looking for another vac for a long long time. You can look it up online and have someone come to your house to show you all the bells and whistles. I was just so fed up with my kids' allergies and never being able to really clean the floors. it's also good to use on mattresses and furniture, it's great! Happy hunting!

I really like my Oreck. It's lightweight, and the model I got came with 21 years of annual service/tune-ups. This year, on the 5th year of service, they replaced the motor and it didn't cost me anything. Bags are kind of expensive if you buy them from the Oreck store, but I've seen them offered online for less. My purchase was a package deal that included a hand-held vac which is great for the car and our stairs.

i love my rccar it cost a pretty penny but it was so worth it!

I have owned 2 Rainbow vacs. The first was inherited(by marriage) and the other I purchased used from a dealer. They are fantastic (you can really tell the diff during pine pollen season in the spring...the yellow ends up in the water of the vac - it is a water filtration system). I highly recommend them. They are pricey, but you don't have to replace every 2-3 years. Our first unit was at least 15 years old when it finally quit. Worth the money!!

I have a Kirby G6 2000. Is excellent in cleaning. Converts from vacuum to foam shampooer (btw foam shampooing IMHO RULES!) to a hardwood cleaner.
Never needs replacing, hardly ever needs repair!! Costly, but pays for itself with all it can do!

Oreck is a marketing scam. High price, crappy vaccum cleaner. Bagless is gross. I love my Kenmore Progressive Vaccum Cleaner

I've had it for 3 years. I bought it reconditioned from a Sears Parts Dept. for $100. It really cleans the carpet and improves the texture. I love the dirt sensor.

My only complaint is the attachment hose is springy and hard to stowe.
