I just brought my daughter home from the hospital yesterday. She was born Saturday afternoon, healthy and happy. She spent her first night in the nursery b/c the nurse wanted to keep an eye on her, she thought that she still had a lot of fluid in her. She slept a lot the first night (which I know is normal) and breastfed when she was hungry. All my nurses seemed to think she was feeding really well and yesterday she only lost 1.7 ounces before we came home. Well, now she's having a little more difficulty feeding, but one of my main concerns is she coughed up huge amounts of fluid. It's kind of phlemy and the amount is silver dollar sized. Has anyone experianced this, she gets really fussy, like her tummy hurts and starts making gagging sounds than she coughs once and out it comes. Is this most likely fluid still in her from being born or do you think she's throwing up the colostrum? I have an appt with her ped. tomorrow morning should I call and get in sooner. Also, last night when I changed her diaper there was a little pink putty like substance in it and than a tiny bit more this morning. I don't think she's dehydrated she's had 2 wet diaper and a huge poop since I guess I'm just looking to see if anyone has had this problem too. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You to all! Like you said the ped. thinks everything is great and she looks happy and healthy. She's been spitting up a little breastmilk but I haven't seen any of the phlemy stuff since the night before last. As everyone said, the pink in her diaper has stopped and now I'm just trying to get her to sleep through the night LOL!! I use mamasource so often to help with questions all of you out there are wonderful, I can't thank you enough!

S.,

My son had this (basically I believe she swallowed fluid when she was born) which is why they kept her overnight. I think they pumped my son's stomach or suctioned it out of him. If she still had a lot of fluid in her and only lost 1.7 ounces I'm guessing she went home with the fluid. I would call your pediatrician and see what he says, perhaps they will want to examine her sooner. I believe it is fairly normal. and the pink stuff- well its just your hormones left over in her and should go away in a couple days. I'm so pleased for you that she is nursing well and if she is peeing and pooping well already then you guys are off to a wonderful start!

Congratulations on your new baby girl! :)

It sounds like what you are discribing is all normal. Was she a vaginal or csection birth? If she was C-S it takes longer for the fluid to get out of the lungs. My 2nd daughter (V-BAC) was caughing up mucus for almost a week!
As far as the blood in her diaper that is very normal it is a little period. It happens when your hormones leave her body. It can also have very thick mucus with it.
Good for you for BFing your little one. These first couple of weeks can be really hard...even if you have done it before. Hang in there and don't be afraid to ask for help and support!!
Blessings, K.

Not sure about the coughing although if she's having good wet and poopy diapers I wouldn't worry that she throwing up the colostrum, at least not enough to make a difference. I would call her ped - just to ease your mind.
Now as for the diaper - I've heard that baby girls sometimes have a mini 'period' caused by the withdrawal from their mother's hormones. Often babies - both boys and girls - have swollen genitals and even breasts that leak a little, all from our hormones. But you can talk to her ped about that too.
Seriously, her pediatrician is going to be your new best friend for the next year or so.

Congratulations S.! What your daughter is spitting up is the mucus (or fluid as the nurse called it). It's totally normal. She's just getting it out. Breastfeeding her is the best thing you can do for her. It will help to break that up and get it out. All babies have this, so don't get worried. The pinkish putty you saw in her diaper is normal too. I work with newborns everyday at a local hospital and see exactly what you've described with both situations. Happy Babymoon, S.

don't worry i paniced too w/my dtr. the phlem is completely normal and the more she gets out the hungrier she'll be. my dtr coughed a lot of phlem out and then she was starving and nursed non-stop for about 2 days. the pink putty stuff is called brick dust. it's your hormones passing out of her, and it's also known as her 1st period. it might be there for a few diaper changes, but will go away. enjoy that new baby, she'll be 2 befroe you know it... hope i've helped!!!

S., it sounds like some of the symptoms my son had. It could be nothing but i suggest that you get your child a sonogram on her heart done asap and have them look at the outflow tracks. I had a son with transposition of the great arteries he showed very few symptoms, breat and bottle feeding was very difficult, he was fussy when laid on his back, and content to lay tummy to tummy on me for like 5hrs. I'm not tring to scare you but better to be safe than sorry. There is a valve in the heart that is open in utero and that valve is suppoise to close with in 3 days after birth. The problem with transposition is that the blood is no longer mixing properly when that valve closes. the Symptoms get worse so look for signs of blue baby. Surgery is required to fix this and a time frame of 14 days after birth before this defect becomes fatal. good luck god be with you and you child.

Hi S. ~
I'm an OB nurse, so hopefully can help some.
The spitting up is normal. Before delivery, amniotic fluid was in her lungs and stomach, they actually swallow the fluid as though they're eating. We usually try to suction some of it out, but we don't always get it all. It's normal for her to spit it up after she's eaten. Some babies do it once and they're done, others it takes a couple days.
The pink in the diaper is also normal. It's called pseudomenses. Alot of little girls have this, and it's from your hormones during pregnancy. It will go away soon.

good luck!
D.

S. first relax and breath. You are doing well and should pat yourself on the back. 2nd. The pink is normal with girls the first couple weeks she could have blood spots its just her hormones and vaginal getting use to the outside world. She is fine with that. You are right some babies still have fluid in them and may cough up that amount or more with in the first week they are home. She is fine. The girgle is she still has fluid. there is no reason to go to the pediatricians any sooner. She will be fine for tomorrows visit. Now if you think she isn't getting enough air her eys look blue or her mouth than I would take her to emergancy. But other than that she is fine and everything is normal. Your doing great keep feeding her. Congradualtions on your little lady!!!

I think that any time you have a question about a newborn, call the pediatrician. That is what you are there for, and it is not a bother to them. The nurse might even be able to help answer some of your concerns over the phone.

I would call the pediatrician today and tell them what you've noticed just in case it is something your little one should be seen for asap rather than wait a day. I never hurts to call, that's what they're there for. I hope all is well.
