If you keep trying & trying, and you can't find a good cloth one to go all through the night, Seventh Generation makes a chlorine-free diaper that is VERY soft - they don't have that crinkly, plastic between the legs like Pampers. It's still a disposable, but it's better than most, both for the kid (because it's softer than other disposables and drier than cloth ones - at least all the ones I tried) and for the environment. (We found 'em on Amazon for a decent price - Whole Foods had them, but charged significantly more.)
I tried cloth for a while, (I wanted to be more environmentally-friendly), but I could never find anything that kept him dry, esp. at night. This, for me, was the "next best thing" I could find. (And their baby wipes are the best - they don't feel as cold on the skin as most of them. You know how rubbing alcohol feels cold on your skin and oil doesn't, even though they're they same temperature? Same thing. But I digress...)
