Need Party Favors - Trying to Skip the Junk!

My oldest is turing 5 next month and is having a Batman/Explorer party. We are doing a Batman cake, making binoculars from toilet paper rolls, doing a superhero obstacle course and going on a treasure hunt. I know, it's all over the place, but this is what he loves right now!

I need ideas for favors that don't include candy or other cheap trinkets that will end up in the garbage. I thought about doing masks and capes, but I'm not sure I have the time to make it happen between now and the party. I'm not looking for something too expensive either...

Any ideas??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I ended up making capes. I found some easy no-sew ideas and it wasn't too expensive. They turned out awesome! We are also doing an obstacle course so each kid will get a little spiderman ball that they used in the course and whatever is left of their can of silly string (used to get the "bad guy"). Thanks for the ideas!

You could still do the mask, and cape ideas but have the kids make them at the party and get to take them home.

What about Batman or Super Hero watches? I got my son one at the Dollar Store.

I just had a simple celebration for my 6 year old. It was just a dinner, so I put games on the table and put hello kitty and rock and roll buttons on the center of the table along with school supplies like giant colored paper clips, colored binder clips, flash cards, and book marks. I just let them take what they wanted and they did!!! Nothing left.

Can you find some cheap flashlights and then just cut out a Batman symbol stencil so they can shine it up against a wall like the bat signal? Flashlights are like $6 per dozen at Oriental Trading. Or just make some bat symbol sugar cookies and send those home as favors. (Cookies aren't technically candy... :) )

Honestly, though, I'd say party favors are not necessary since you're already doing a craft and a treasure hunt.

Why not see if you can find some black kid sized cooking aprons. Then turn them around (maybe snip of the tie strings) and viola..a cape! You could have the kids decorate them or you could just use some fabric glue and glue on a yellow bat appliqué that you cut out from some cheap yellow felt.

You could also get some sponges and cut it into a bat shape and they could sponge paint their own cape or something too. I don't know how crafty boys are at 5, but my daughter would be all about that! I'm sure you can also find some cheap black masks at Party City or at Oriental Trading Co. To me, those would be the best party favors!

I did see at Target today though a little packet of markers, stickers, etc. that have Batman on them. They were each only $1, so that's an idea too. It's a little trinket-y but still kinda fun and useable. They actually had quite a selection of Batman stuff in the dollar section.

sidewalk chalk is always the number one fav at our house (or it used to be lol) if your doing favors. either that or a big cookie with a thank you note attached that says thanks for coming. other than that skip the junk

Baseball cards or superhero cards (I know there are some for Avengers). You can get them at target or toys r us. crayons and coloring books. Make CDs of your son's favorite songs. Playdoh and cookie cutters (you can get 100 for $10 at bed bath and beyond).

Go to Hobby Lobby and look in the craft kit area where the foam kits are. We got some different crowns one year for a princess birthday party. They glued stones and glitter to the crowns to make each one different.

They will have some that are shaped more for boys masks too. You can buy these and then supply the glue and what ever other stuff you think they might like to glue on them.

Otherwise I would not waste any money on party favors. They are a waste of time and money as far as most parents are concerned. The kids just throw them away that day or the next.

Check the dollar store for pencils, small note pads, erasers, squirt guns or small coloring books with a few crayons in each bag.

I say the black mask for sure. Look @ Wal-Mart (found one for $5 that came w/a cape for Superman).

Look at the Dollar Store first maybe.

You can make a cape. Fabric & velcro. Nothing fancy.

Matchbox cars for $1 (I found some at the Party Store, some @ Walgreens & some @ Wal-Mart but those were a little more expensive there).

my daughter went to a party where they made the capes and masks themselves. if you had them make them, all you have to do is provide the supplies.
