Why not just get the DS and an MP3 player (cheaper than an IPOD) that she can have games AND music???
I’m hoping there are some tech-savvy moms that can help me with this one! My stepdaughter is turning 7 on Thursday. She’s been going back and forth about whether she wants an iPod or a Nintendo DS (we told her to choose 1 or the other). She’s having a hard time choosing, so I was wondering....does a DS play music? Can we download music either from the internet or from her CDs to listen to on the DS? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for (non-violent) games that would be good for a 7 year old girl?
Thanks!

Hi E.B.
My question is: Why would you want to give a 7 year old the privilege of having either one of these electronic gadgets?
Just want to know. D.
ninetendo ds will help her with her dexterity and thinking
go to gamestops used games much cheaper
hold off with ipod till little older or give at christmas
My daughter loved the Nintendogs at that age. I believe they have one for cats too.
Get the DSI and some of the games for kids are, Dora, nintendo dogs, tigerz, dolphins, cats, fashion, brain games, animal crossing, Hannah montana, scooby doo etc.... Tons to choose from. Go to gamestop to buy them. Also, blockbuster rents games, we try them first and if my daughter likes it and wants it she will go buy it (she is 9)
I'm pretty sure that the new DSi can do music (check the nintendo website). There are tons of games...any of the Brain Age games, Build a Bear workshop, etc...good luck!
There is the new DSI that my boys got. I think it is better for her age then an I pod. It does music takes pictures let's them decorate the pictures. Let's you record your own voice
I'm sure even more then that. That is what I would get. Good luck.
As someone else suggested, you could buy her the regular DS (which is half the price of the DSI) and buy a MP3 (which will do much of the same thing as an IPOD for a LOT less money). I would save the IPOD for a few years time, as they are pricey and she is still too young to appreciate all that they can do anyway.
My daughter loves "Animal Crossing" and "Nintendogs."
Het the new Nintendo DSI I believe it does play music as well. look it up on toys r us or walmart and it tells you about it. it's the newest one.
The new Nintendo DSI (newest DS) you can download music. It also has a camera, which takes decent pictures. You need a memory card to save more then eight pictures or songs. Its nice, but its $169.99. They have them everywhere. My both kids have them and love them. Some great games for girls: Littlest Pet Shop (they have like 5 games), Cooking Mama, Mario Kart, Brain Age. Good Luck!!
I don't think you can download the music directly to the nintendo ds BUT you can buy a flashcard that you can download music onto and use it with that. You may want to make sure your computer is able to do so.
Also some games my niece loves she is also 7 is Nintedogs, Fashion design, Brain Age, Petz Dog, and cooking mama.
Hope this helps and best of luck. :)
My son just turned 8 in April and he asked for a Nintendo DS. When we went to purchase it at Game Stop we were told that the DSi was coming out the next weekend. We waited and paid more money that we planned and got the DSi. You can play 80% of the DS games on the DSi. I believe the i stands for internet. My son loves the DSi and he can take pictures with it and play games with other friends that have a DSi through a wireless internet connection. If you go to or call a Game Stop, they will be able to answer all of your questions. My son also received a iPod Nano for Christmas and he uses the DSi far more. Good Luck and I hope your daughter has a great birthday.
Yes, you can buy the DSi and it will play music. I bought brain age II for us and we like it a lot. It is quite educative and fun.
Cheers,
A.
DS is pretty neat. There is also a new one that plays music and takes pictures. I think it's DSI. There's a game called Lovely L.. My daughter loves it. Good luck.
Hi, I would get the DS. Especially if the new one holds music. There are alot of games apropriate for a 7yo girl. As others have suggested, go to gamestop for used games, they are cheaper and you can sell back the ones she is done with for credit to the store. There are so many animal games, the entire "Imagine" series and lots of time managment like Cake Mania, Lots of games to choose from. Good Luck and enjoy some of the games yourself!
A few games that I LOVE to play are the Cooking Mama series. There's Cooking Mama and Cooking Mama 2 and there's also a Gardening Mama. There's also one called Playground. You "play" playground games (hopscotch, dodge ball, soccer, etc). Lots of fun. There's also a few brain teaser type games.....Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village and Henry Hatsworth (although this one is a little tricky! I still haven't beaten it!!). My husband also recommends http://www.whattheyplay.com/ as a good site to look up ANY game and it will tell you what to expect in the game and what your children will see. Good luck!!
Hello there.. I have a 10yr old boy ,a 9yr old boy and a 4yr old girl. so know alot about what's out there for these days for kids. To let you know the DS does not play music, but if fun for the games you get. My son had the DS until they came out with the DSI witch is WAY COOL, even for me. You can play music with your sd card, and does alot for other stuff with out even playing games. I has a camera for taking pictures. So once you think about the cost of a DS, iPod, Camera, and lots of fun it worth it... Think we paid about 180.00 something for it at toys ur us. Games that my kids like are Nintendogs, Fantasy Aquarium, Rayman Raving rabbids2, Point blank ds, brain age, petz dogs 2, and there is alot more games out there that she would like. Well i hope this helped alittle. T. from pa
I think that the new DS-I does play music like an ipod would so that would solve all of your problems.
Good Luck!
As far as i know. you can not download music to a DS. I actually have one. Now they have a new DSi out i don't know about that one.
