Maybe just some pink, yellow, and red stars, lightning bolts and swirls? I would have Iron Man and Barbie high-fiving, maybe with a bad guy tied up in red licorice ropes at the bottom or on the other side of the cake.
My daughter is unique. She has requested a birthday cake with barbie and iron man. I have found a 4-inch barbie and a 4-inch iron man, so I thought I would get those and put them on the cake. But how do I decorate it? What should the scene be, or the icing be like? I can't come up with any ideas. One of my friends suggested that they be fighting, but I don't want that! Also, any ideas about how to keep barbie's dress from getting icing all over it? I know nothing about cake decorating, so if you give me suggestions please keep in mind that I need "decorating for dummies" type advice! Thanks!

You can buy sugar sheets that have any design you can imagine on them and you just place it on top of the frosting and it melts into the cake. They work really well and we use them for every birthday for both of my kids.
Go to ebay, type in Edible Cake Topper Barbie (or Iron Man) and see the results. When you find one you like, contact the seller and ask him/her to create you one that combines Barbie and Iron Man. Last year, I sent in a picture of the paper plates I had bought and the seller created a perfect replica on the frosting sheet, including writing happy birthday, etc.
Personally, I would look at the colors that are one each figurine. I am not good at decorating but great at ideas so I would order a sheet cake that is just decorated with colors that either match both or would coordinate with each. Once home, I would place the figures on the cake (near the top, maybe in opposite corners or closer to the center together). I have done this several times w/ my daughter because she too comes up with original themes (definately not a "cookie cutter" type of kid). We order the "streamers" design and specify the colors we want.
If Barbie is wearing pink and Iron Man is that maroon color, you can use pink, maroon, and maybe another color in between the two.
If you are making the cake yourself, you can maybe use a pinkish tint to the icing and then just use a maroonish color for writing and a standard design.
Another option is two cupcake trees with Barbie at the top of one and Iron Man at the top of the other.
Decorate the cake so they're having a picnic. :-) You can put barbie and Iron man on a little gingham "blanket" (a cut square of red and white checked plastic table cloth) to protect her dress. Green on the cake top, edged with yellow and pink flowers.
How fun!
Two small cakes or cupcakes may be best. Or Barbie and Iron Man could be the newest crime-fighting duo!
Well, Iron Man is known for his charm...
If you don't want her dress messed up, use a platform (or wash the dress after). If you don't want to offend the feminist who don't want to see Iron Man saving Barbie, maybe just put them back to back on the top.
How about a Barbie and Iron Man wedding cake with them as the couple on top? Simple white buttercream frosting. Cakes cut in various sizes, stacked and maybe colored polka dots all over to match the characters colors.
For my older kids 4th birthday, my daughters were totally into Hello Kitty and my son was all about Spiderman. I ordered a cake and had half the cake decorated partially like a brick wall and the other with pink flowers. Then had Happy Birthday across both. Then I took a small Spiderman that looked like he was shooting web and a couple of Hello Kitty figures and out them on the cake. They were happy and the cake did not look weird at all. What you could do is use pink and purple edging for the Barbie side maybe with some flowers, slowly moving into red and yellow for Iron Man. Not sure what else could be on the Iron Man side since I have to admit I have not seen the movies.
These are Darth Vader mash ups but they might inspire you. Have fun!
I like PB&J's idea do cupcakes and do some of them the colors for Iron Man and some the colors for barbie and put barbie in the middle of hers and Iron man in the middle of his.
How about a rectangular cake divided in half diagonally?
Each half can display O. character and anything/colors/items related to each.
Barbie side-- the figure, pink piping, shoes, bags, etc.
Iron Man side -- the figure and whatever--can't help you out there! Sorry!
Barbie and Iron Man holding hands and just decorate with maroon and pink and maybe gold to tie the two closer together (Iron Man has gold on him). The other thing that popped into my head was to have Iron Man and Barbie ice skating or dancing...just fill the top of the cake with blue icing and smooth it out for skating or any color as a dance floor. I think I thought of those two b/c they would be simple decorating wise. I'm with you - I can't decorate cakes - you are brave to try! Have you looked @ your local grocery store? If they have Barbie and Iron Man, I bet they could make a cake with some elements from both. I've done that a few times for my son - used a color/element from a theme and just had them combine or leave off what I didn't want then added my own figurines, etc. LOVE the Barbie/Iron Man combo BTW - your daughter sounds creative and AWESOME! Happy birthday to her!
Do you have a bundt pan? if so, for the barbie cake, bake the cake in that and then.... cut the sections out, notice how they are like a wedge, then you fit the wedges around the barbie (as though you were putting together a big puffy dress) pipe the frosting around the wedges so that it looks like a frilly lacy dress... there are lots of pics online that can better illustrate what I mean.. as for iron man, I am not sure about him..
