Ok y'all...I feel pretty silly asking this question. I have 2 boys that are ready to potty train but I've only potty trained a girl so far. My question is, how do I train a boy? Am I supposed to teach him to stand up or sit down to pee? Its pretty bad that I have 3 boys and don't even know which route to take on this. Please help!! Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So my 25 month old son is officially potty training himself. I haven't pushed anything on him yet, but he really wants to do it. So he's sitting down to go pee pee. He's so proud cuz he can go "poo poo" also. I haven't changed a dirty diaper on him in over a week now! This is so exciting! My goal is to get him fully trained and then start on my older son with Down Syndrome. Maybe his brother doing it will help to encourage him. Thanks everybody!

Ok, here is how mine were trained. One thing you can do is put cherrios in the toilet and have him try to pee on them. Also, I gave mine a treat everytime they went to the bathroom. Like just a couple of m & m's or something. One other thing is we lived in the country so we taught them to pee outside also. They had a lot of fun with that. Just have to be careful that they dont want to do that all the time.

Though I have 3 daughters, I remember my mom training both of my younger brothers. She sat them backwards on the potty. When they were ready to stand, they just backed up a little.

Hi! I trained my little boy to sit down first and we did that for a long time. He is three and three months now and I told him he needed to start standing up like Daddy. He gets a stool to stand on and has done wonderfully with it. I think this attributes to becoming a master at sitting first. He also does not have any trouble knowing to sit when he goes poo poo. My opinion is that if you take it one slow step at a time it does not overwhelm them so badly. We are also working on wiping the bottom good right now. I may be slower at achieving all of this, but his caregiver and I are right on board and it has worked wonderfully. Good luck!!!

I have 3 boys and started all of them sitting down first. Once they had the potty training down & could balance either on a step stool or stand on the floor & reach then I started them standing up. Once they were standing I put Cheerios / Fuitloops in the toilet for the aiming issues. They had a blast trying to sink the rings!

Hi - understanding about your eldest, and certain problems that might entail, try teaching them to sit down and do any women in their future a HUGE favor lol. My boyfriend was taught to sit down and I taught my boys to sit. I had my eldest son's girlfriend thank me for that. They will be using a potty chair anyway, might as well utilize it to the fullest. Truly, teaching them to sit down will make it easier for them in their futures. Good luck and God bless.

i am potty training my son right now and i am teaching him to sit. it makes it easier than teaching him two different steps for pee and poo. i bought a potty but he doesnt even use it. i just put him on the toliet and he holds on to the sides for balance.

A.: I understand the confusion when it comes to potty training a little girl and then potty training a boy! They are so very different! I suggest that you train him to stand up...either get him his "own little toilet" to put next to the toilet in the bathroom, or get him a step stool that he can stand on to go in the real toilet....something we did that really worked..and it was funny too! Put cheerios in the toilet and tell him "pee in the cheerio"! See if he can pee in the hole of the cheerio! I know, it's silly, but it works and it makes it fun for both of you! He will be very serious at trying to master this task and you will be full of laughter! You can also use the "big boy" phsycology..and just tell him he's a big boy now and has to use the toilet like his daddy! If you get him his own little toilet, you can also have the hubby take him in the bathroom when he goes and they can pee together! I know this sounds silly, but it worked for us!

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

God Bless,

Hi A.. I would suggest having him sit first. That is how I started with our son. It was just too confusing at first to have him understand that he stood to pee, but sat to poop. Eventually he wanted to start standing on his own because he saw that was what dad was doing. By then he was already trained so the "aim" was better too. Good luck to you.

Dear A.,
Although it has been a while since I potty trained my son I thought I would share a few things that got me through this phase. To get him to go standing up I put some fruit loops in the water and had him aim at them. (sometimes hit-sometimes miss) This worked well for me. Now when it comes to #2 that was a bit tricky on this I would reward him with bubble gum after each visit. I got a gum ball ____@____.com this day he still remembers the gum rewards. I hope this helps you in some way. Best wishes to you.

Okay after reading all the posts I guess I am the odd ball here....both my boys learned standing up - just like daddy! It was more fun that way for them. And, yes, you are going to have to clean up splatter, BUT so can they! They learn pretty fast to keep it in the bowl when they have to wipe up the dribble (wish I could do the same to my hubby, LOL!) If the boys can't quite get over the rim, get a step stool. Oh, I totally agree with the using fruit loops as targets...big fun for boys :o) Good Luck!

A.,

I had two girls and then a boy and I taught the boy to sit first since it was all I knew. In the beginning he wasn't always exactly sure if he just had to pee or if he had to poop too. Sitting takes care of both! It was also awhile before I felt like he had the control to aim when he was standing. He was fascinated by the fact that his daddy could stand up. And, once he was completely trained, we let him try standing. (His daddy taught him this part!) He is now 5 and I don't spend any extra time cleaning up "misses." I have several friends who had warned me that, once he started standing, there would be pee everwhere - until he left home! Even friends who have high school age boys say that it is as if their sons are blind! So, whenver you do start teaching your son to stand up, I would strongly suggest emphasizing neatness and respecting the others that have to use or clean the bathroom. That seems to have worked for us - for now anyway.

We started our son sitting down and it was much easier that way. We have him at an in-home childcare and that's how she teaches all her boys. He did just recently start standing up some of the time as he's just tall enough to be able to "reach" over the top of the potty and has been watching daddy.

I definitely agree that starting with them sitting is much much easier.
