I know they aren't healthy, but it's her b-day and her choice for food. What is a good way to cook a lot of hot dogs at one time without bbqing them?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the great tips! I have never really liked hot dogs so am not an expert. But, thankfully, you guys are! I think I will try baking them. My daughter would eat them raw, so she will be pleased no matter what. As for the nitrate free hot dogs, I have had a hard time finding them. So, far I have only found them at Trader Joe's, which is about 25 miles from our house.

You could get some kosher nitrate free dogs. They are what I gt when I crave hot dogs and they are soooooo yummy:) They are more expensive, but worth it to me. There are many brands, I like Hebrew National the best cause they are carried in practically every grocery chain.

I like to put them in the oven. You can put them straight on the rack with a cookie sheet underneath to catch the dripping. They cook in 5-10 minutes, and you can cook many at one time. They also taste better than boiled, they have that crisp skin when you bite into them.

I second Betty's suggestion of nitrate-free dogs. There are some fairly healthy options out there. They'll cost a bit more, but they'll still be cheaper than many other food options, and they're sooo worth it!

As for a 'healthy' hot dog, I buy mine at Trader Joe's. It's an Uncured All Beef Hot Dog with no nitrates or nitrites. No fillers, gluten, MSG, antibiotics, or hormones. The ingredient list is short and all things I can read and know what they are.

Put a little water in the bottom of an electric roaster, turn on low. You can start these earlier. Very easy ;0)

Bake them in the oven...you could probably get a hundred in there and they would all be done at the same time...
Also, if you want a healthier choice, use Turkey Hot dogs. We use them and our kids dont know the difference. Have fun either way. Who cares if they eat one hot dog! :)

You could make the birthday girl a special "hot dog man" - take a hot dog and cut a split on one end to make the "legs" then further up cut two diagonal slits on either side for "arms" and then boil. The "arms" and "legs" will curl out to make a fun hot dog man.

We eat Hebrew Nationals... still hot dogs, but without all the yucky parts!

I think the best way to cook lots without a BBQ would be in the oven. Just put them all on a baking sheet not touching. More baking sheets if needed, and put them in the oven around 375. Roll them every once and a while for even cooking, and they are done when they swell and the ends start to crack.

Boiling them is fairly quick and easy, but gross in my opinion.

A griddle works well too, but not as quick or easy as the oven.

my kids still love hot dogs--- they are now 44 to 25 yrs. old lol, i'd do weiner wraps, refridger bisquits [ the smallest cheaper kind ] heat dogs in microwave first , as bisquits get done before dogs get warm, cut dogs in half.good luck with party and have fun. mona

You can try putting them in a crock pot hours before the party with a lot of water...or just boil them all on the stove before serving.

My son wanted chili dogs for his 3rd birthday and I was cooking for about 30+ people and I boiled a large stock pot of them and it was so easy. About 20 mins or so from start to finish. There were a few left and I put them in the fridge and we ate them over the next few days and they were fine. Good Luck!

Boil them for a few minutes until plumped up, then stick them under a low broil for just a couple minutes to give them that finished off appearance, like a grill. Won't need long, and make sure you leave the door opened on the broil stop while you do it.

This is how I make all sausages in our house, and everyone raves about them. Have a Happy Birthday!

for parties I suggest pigs in a blanket.. cut hot dogs in half and wrap in a biscuit. bake at 325 for 10 min. All times are suggested. sometimes i split the dog down the middle and put a little bit of cheese in it. Kids can dip these in their favorite condiments. Try chicken or turkey dogs for a healthier choice. Have fun!

The great thing about hot dogs is that they are technically already cooked...all you have to do is warm them up.

I have done this for my son in the past...cuz he is a hot dog fanatic too. Take the largest spaghetti pot you have...fill with water...and heat them up. I tend to bring it to a boil (to really get it quick) and then just cook them for a few minutes until the ends slightly explode (I know they are good and hot then). To keep them warm you can get one of those cheap aluminum warming trays with the little candle thingy under it or just plate them and wrap tightly in aluminum and place in a VERY low temp oven to keep warm.

Winco has a HUGE package of hotdogs for super cheap if you are looking to buy in bulk! Have fun!

Bake them, no chance of any one getting burned with hot water and taste better. I always serve rice crispy treats at parties, too. I have one vegetarian kid and one meat eater. That way my daughter isn't just eating cake and ice cream.

Now I'm not saying that this is fast but it sure is funny. There's a website called boingboing and somewhere on it is a new way to cook hot dogs. You slice them up into 1" pieces, push raw spaghetti noodles through them (lengthwise), and boil them. People have creative names for these and it's well worth a look (you could search under "noodle dogs").

Disgusting? Definitely. But well worth it.

Try Shelton's chicken or turkey hot dogs. They're organic and made without the nitrates and taste really good despite all that. Haha! Unfortunately I can only find them at Fred Meyer's (in the organic freezer section and they don't always have them) or health food stores.

Boil them for 10 minutes or more depending on the number you have to cook. 5 & under 10 minutes, more than that say 20 hot dogs a minute per hot dog (20) minutes. Make sure you have the lid to your pot to keep them warm after you are done cooking them.

Heat them in a pot of hot water. They stay really juicy (the way kids like them) and you can keep them hot for as long as you need them for kids who want seconds by just leaving them in the water. We did this for my son's 4th b-day too (I'm also not a big hot dog fan, but hey, kids love em). You can get big packs at Costco that are pretty good.

I agree with boiling them in a 5 qt pot. Stick them on to boil, then turn them off, cover them and they stay warm until you're ready to serve. In another pot make up a big batch of mac n cheese and cut up some fresh fruit. Got ya a great meal.

Crock pots work well. I've seen this done many times. Just don't leave them in there cooking all day, they tend to burst or turn funny colors if you do that.
