Need to Replace My Dinnerware. Any Suggestions?

I have solid white Corelle that holds up great and is dishwasher and microwave safe.

I don't use coffee mugs or tea cups.

I went to the Corelle store and bought about 24 plates, bowls, and assorted items we use on a daily basis. I've used this for many years and I am very happy.

It is pretty plain jane but very functional. If I have a big event where I want to be more formal or dressy, I use my fine china.

I use to use Corelle which you can drop a hundred times. But if you drop it and it hits just right it basically explodes sending shards everywhere. I got rid of that set when the kids were little.

We are really h*** o* dinnerware so I just pick up sets at Walmart and throw out pieces as they get cracked and chipped. I usually have to replace after 3 or 4 yrs. Next time I think I'll go with Amazon basic plates.

Corelle. i use it, my mother uses it, my mother in law uses it, my grandmas, and all 3 of my sisters in law use it. many styles to choose from but i went with plain white so no matter what holiday or color i decide to change my kitchen to it will still match.

I think just about anything you get will get a bit brittle over time with a lot of microwave use.
We've used Corelle forever.
First set we had was given to me by my Mom when she got a new set for herself.
They were from before microwaves were popular and they broke over time.
We got another Corelle set later on and these are over 20 years old now and doing alright.
There are a few chipped edges here and there but we're still happy with them.
We get the pieces we need at outlets or open stock stores - so we never got any tea cups.
We have a motley collection of coffee cups that we've collected over the years and don't match anything but it's nothing that's ever bothered us.

My set is Dansk (which was bought by Lenox, so now I guess it's Lenox), you can choose either coffee cups or tea cups, and I've had it for more than 20 years. The only problems a few plates have is a chip on edge because I dropped a plate here and there. I use them every day - definitely microwave/dishwasher safe. They are a little bit heavy, so they feel good in my hands. And with my blue placemats and colorful napkins, it's cheery, IMO.

It's bound to happen, eventually. I purposely bought Gibson solid-white, embossed dinnerware from JCPenney (this is my set: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gibson-Home-Regalia-46-Piece-D.... I think that white dinnerware with minimalist embossing just looks more elegant, and I like to see if my dishes are clean. With colorful patterns, you can miss stains. It is easy to clean up too, and you don't have to worry about the glaze and colors fading because there aren't any. My mother has Corelle dishes. She's had them for about as long as my white ones (about 10 years). The flowers are fading and now the dishes look ugly (I guess that is fine for daily use), she will resort to fine China (the type that needs to be handwashed) when she has people over. I can still use my white dinnerware since it's impeccable and if some stains won't come out, I can use bleach without worrying it will fade colors, or that the hot water from the washing machine or the heat from the microwave will ruin them. I know some people who have glass plates for this reason, they think it looks clean and is easier to maintain than something with a glazed pattern. I do have my Mikasa wedding China but I would not risk putting it in the dishwasher or microwave since it has blue and silver engraving, which would probably get ruined. I just use it for decoration.

I had a Pfaltzgraff set from our wedding that was very nice - said dish/washer safe but wasn't. It cracked, chipped and faded and got these dark marks (like rings) in it. Very disappointed.

What we just ended up doing was getting another Pfaltzgraff set at a big box store for something like $30 box for a 4 plate setting so we got 2 sets.

Before, it was expensive place settings - where people gave us a place setting as a gift. This is far cheaper, and has stood up beautifully. It's far more durable and is really nice and simple. I've had one chip so far, and that's with kids loading our dishwasher.

If you go to the big box stores, you will often see the same nice brands, but they have the boxed sets geared towards the lower price points - in simple designs or even just plain white, with the coffee mugs. I actually like the shapes better - they are more family friendly. I would just go and have a look. I was surprised at how many I liked.

I got mine on a sale - that's the other advantage. Anyhow, they are far more durable than their pricier versions.

I would definitely go with Corelle. My mother has had her set for over 40 years and in that time has only broken 2 pieces. Since Corelle stands by their product both pieces were replaced for free. I have my own set also that I have had for a few years. They have many different pattern to choose from and you can get everything that matches. I have platters, cheese trays, a cutting board, spoon rest and the napkin holder also.

i got a set of corelle for my wedding, which was over 30 years. still have most of it in my cupboard.

it reputedly can shatter badly if dropped wrong. but most things *can*. mine never has.

Our Corelle dishes and cups have lasted 20+ years though handwashing, dishwasher, and microwave use. My mother's set of Corelle is 40+ years old.

I have plain white dishes with about 1 inch rims. My husband had a set of 4 place settings when we met and married 29 years ago. About 13 years ago, I added another set of 4 place settings from a different manufacturer, but they look the same.
All that to say, pick something classic you can add to without much effort.
I’ve seen some decent classic white sets everywhere from Walmart to Ikea to Target to Williams Sonoma - (the outlet has great sales).
I’ve also added large white pasta bowls to my set - just basic white without rims - and pretty much everyone thinks they came with my dishes.

I like Johnson Brothers Staffordshire Old Granite. It's moderate in price, has any decoration under the glaze, is detergent and acid resisting colouring. I think technically it's stone ware even tho it looks like China. Stoneware is sturdier. I've not had any chips or breakage in 30 years.

I looked up dish ware differences and mine is stoneware.

I suggest you go to a department store to look at all styles and ask about strength.

I also like Fiesta. My daughter has Fiesta. She's used it for 10 years and not broken any pieces.

My pwarents had Corell with a pattern. In a few years the pattern and plate seemed to have a whitish film on them. They always used the dishwasher.

I've heard that FiestaWare is nice and long lasting. Never tired it myself though. And it comes in a ton of gorgeous colors. That being said all my dishes are from a thrift store or bought at an estate auction. The dishes from the thrift store was a set for 6 people so 6 of everything and was less than $10. They are just a multi color set so if I need to add to it I just get any color and it appears to match. They go thru the dishwasher and microwave just fine and actually say on them dishwasher and microwave safe. The dishware from the auction is fine China from Germany. I googled it a while ago and though old, like from the 1930's it is in great shape and was only $35 for a 12 person place setting of dinner plates, dessert plates, tea cups though, and the coaster plate for the tea cups, larger soup bowls and smaller dessert bowls I guess, gravy boat, serving platter and a few other things I don't even know what they were used for. It also goes in the dishwasher just fine. Since so old though obviously I don't think they are microwave safe. I hate to spend a ton on dishes that will get broken (my kids do the dishes and drop some occasionally, ok more than occasionally). Since it was so inexpensive we use the fine china often. They are really pretty though. They were so cheap so no tears or yelling if they get broken. I really don't care just clean up the broken glass.

Another vote for Corelle. Our set is basic white, teacup-sized mugs, large plates, small plates, and bowls. I have managed to shatter some of the small plates, and yes, they do shatter into lots of shards. However, I was able to replace them with separate singles from the grocery store.

I've used Corelle for many years - my M. had it, also.

It is lightweight, durable, and comes in many patterns. We can put it in the dishwasher with no problems, and it is microwave save, also.

They resist breaking, but if they do break, they can shatter into glass-like shards.

There are also outlet stores where you can get more pieces.
