Needing Advice with My 3 Month Old Son!

My son will be 3 months old on the 27th. About a month ago I noticed a small knot develop on his belly next to his belly button. The knot isn't hard, and isn't causing him any pain at all. The next day, I took him to the doctor who sent us for an ultrasound to see if it was a hernia. The report came back negative, and the radiologist that performed the procedure mentioned that it could be a loop of intestine. When he was 2 weeks old, he began to show signs of colic. He had hard stool and constipation, and would have to have his temp taken rectal to stimulate him to go. After doing this everynight for a week, I decided to change his formula to soy based. It helped, but he continued to have hard stool. When the doctor suggested the loop of intestine, it made sense to me and would explain his problems. The pediatrician recommended us just watching it to see if it would clear up on it's own. Being a paranoid mom I didn't like the idea, so he sent us to a Pediatric Gasrologist (sp?), she said she didn't think it was anything to do with his intestines. She gave him Laculose for the hard stool, and that has worked miracles. We went for a Beriman (again sp?) enima, which again came back that everything was normal. The PG suggested us have a MRI done to see if it is a plot of fat or a muscle budge. Since he is only 3 months old, he will have to be put to sleep which I'm not comfortable with at all. I asked her what we would do if it was fat or a muscle budge, and she said we would have to go see a surgerion. I'm not sure if I want to put my son through this to find out that it's nothing, and it will clear up on it's own. Please give me some advice on what you would do in my situation, or give me some medical evidence to lead me in either direction! He is growing like normal and eating fine. I'm sorry to ramble, but just wanted to give all the facts. Thanks for your help in advance!

R.,

I am so sorry to hear that you, your son and your family must go through this. As a mother of a very premature baby who was born 3 months earlier, I share your pain. One way to decide whether or not to continue with the MRI depends on worst case scenario. What would happen if you did not get the MRI to find out the cause? I think that will answer your question. If the worst case is something you can handle, then albeit wait for it to go away or show other symptoms that require attention. Otherwise, I suggest getting the MRI. In the grand scheme of your son's life, this is but a small challenge. Babies are fighters. I have one. I know!

Take care! I wish your son well!

What a tough decision to have to make. I don't envy you having to struggle with this. My questions for the doctor(s) would be 1) If it is a plot of fat, what are possible complications from leaving it alone? 2) Same question for the muscle budge 3) Would your sone be better able to handle the surgery now or later? In other words, do the doctors think that operating at this point would be a smaller procedure with less trauma for him than waiting until potentially the fat/muscle issue because larger (this, I would think would depend on the answers to 1 & 2 as well)? 4) What are the risks of the anethesia for a 3 mo?

For me, personally, if I didn't think that leaving the plot of fat or muscle bulge alone would cause him pain or become a worse problem for him to deal with later, I would wait to see what happens with it. In that case, then you are only delaying what will need to be done later, but his little body will have time to grow and become even stronger for handling whatever the remedy for the issue is. If there were a strong possibility that the issue would become much worse over time if left alone, then I would want to risk the anethesia to determine what we were dealing with.

I wish I had a more helpful resonse. Good luck with this!

Hi R.!

I'm sorry you're having to go through this!! My daughter was an 8 week preemie and born with an ovarian cyst on her left ovary and unfortunately her cyst continued to grow rather than go away. When she was two months old (basically zero), she had to undergo surgery and had her ovary and left fallopian tube removed. My point there is not to worry so much about being put to sleep. What hospital have you been visiting for your sons treatments? The Pediatric Surgeon who started taking care of my daughter while she was in the NICU was wonderful!! He does his surgery at Children's in Dallas off 75 and they had a great anesthesiologist.

I know you don't want to jump into any kind of unneccessary surgeries or treatments for your sweet tiny baby, I wouldn't want to either. And even if right now this little knot doesn't bother him, it could possibly continue to grow and bother him later. Or it could be nothing and go away but you'll never know unless you get to the bottom of it. And I know it's more frustrating for you when all ultrasounds and everything points to nothing!

Good luck!

Go to a pediatric surgeon. I knew one from the hospital and when I took my 3month old son to him, he was great. My little one had a hydrocele- we were worried about a hernia and never had to follow up. Instead of messing around with more tests go to Dr Darryl Herman- He is one of the best pediatric surgeons in the city. They have offices in Plano and in Dallas. I would hate to put your little one through an MRI esp if it is not needed BUT at the same time you wouldn't want to miss anything important or serious. So see the surgeon first and get his advice.
Hope this helps.
