New Carpet Recommendations

We need to replace carpet and are looking for recommendations. We have looked at Home Depot, Lowes and a local company. The local company is great, but more expensive and considering how much we are doing, cost is a major factor. We don't want cheap, just something that will wear well with little kids and last us 15-20 years.

Anyone with experience with the major chains - good or bad - or suggestions of other places or even brands of carpet?

What can I do next?

I just had some carpet installed in a cottage and here's what I did...

I called a local, smaller company and asked them if they ever purchase huge rolls of high quality, neutral color carpeting?? And do they then pass the savings onto us the buyer? And of course, yes, they do. I purposely told myself that whatever carpet they picked out was good enough for town no bigger than ours...and it was beautiful. They did a quality installation and I couldn't be happier and I did not waste hours of my time lamenting over price differences at Home Depot type stores.

For instance, the carpet was normally $25/sq ft installed and they sold it to me for $16/sq ft. If you look at carpet that is actually $16 sq ft versus what we have there is an incredible difference.

We had Home Depot do our last house in Clackamas. They have individual contractors to install the carpet. We had trouble to the seem straight down the center of the family room. It appeared the carpet was 2 different colors. They replaced the carpet 3 times, trying to get it to match. On the 3rd install it was a different contractor, he said you can't place a seem in the middle of the room, the light will reflect and carpet will appear to be 2 different colors. REALLY! Right now we are getting our carpet replaced in a vacation home in Bend. We had Lowes and a local company come out for bids. It is good to get 2 to compare. Lowes price once we broke it down, weren't as good as we first thought. Lowes wanted more sq ft of carpet, more to haul away and more $ per sq ft for the carpet. This made up for the labor with the local company, we are going with the local guy. I don't have a recommendation of a little company in Hillsboro. The brand of carpet we liked is Shaw's it seems to be sold my the little guys. google Shaw's carpet and put in your zip, you might find one. Good luck!

Lowes...and the Smart Strand carpet by DuPont. It is not only the softest, thickest carpet with a lifetime stain warranty....it is very low in vocs....those bad chemicals you do NOT want in your home. It's not made from petroleum...but corn. Honestly...there is no other choice for health, durability and value. It's the least expensive at lowes and I think they have a deal with installation now.
