After getting ideas and thoughts from here and from other resources, my husband and I have decided to go to New Orleans. But now I have to plan it, I need a little help. 1)Are we going to need a car or can we stay in a motel that will be within walking distances of everything we will need and want to do? 2) What hotel or motel would that be and we are cheap and don't care about the room as long as it is safe and not infested with bugs and drugs.......we like to spend our money on the drinks and shops do not need or want anything fancy, motel 6, days inn, holiday inn something along that. 3) Whatever you guys want to give me on must do's and stay aways.

Thanks :)

What can I do next?

If you take your car you are paying up to $25+/day for just hotel parking, not to mention parking fees if you drive anywhere like a museum or park, and you're taking a risk that enough valets will be available to get your car within 15mins of when you need to leave.

Take a taxi. Its $7-10 anywhere between the quarter, the business district, the warehouse district (there's some good eating there!), and the garden district. Plus if you get a good driver, he's most likely an old timer and can tell you stories about NO.

Try Hampton Inn (St. Charles), Country Inn and Suites (Magazine), or even Holiday Inn in the business district. All are business class hotels that usually provide bfast that should provide you some pretty good rates and are clean, not run down.

If you are looking for a cheap hotel within walking distance, try one of the hotels/motels further down canal, which is just a 5-10 min extra walk from everything.

How long are you staying? Here's a sample itinerary for the garden district:
Day 1 - Garden District - go window shopping, check out the old grand homes, have a nice lunch, walk through Tulane, Audubon and even the zoo, dinner at Commander's Palace.

There's so much to do in NO!

I've stayed at the Drury hotel in NOLA. It's nice and clean, the parking lot is gated and parking is free. It's in walking distance from the French Quarter, shopping, Cafe Du Monde and everything you'd like to see.

Daytime is very family friendly. Go have coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde. It's a must. Go dring and dance down Bourbon Street in the evening. Lots of fun. :-) http://www.cafedumonde.com/

We took a taxi from the airport to our hotel in the quarter. So we didn't even rent one. Didn't need to.

Go on hotel.com and get some information regarding hotels. However, when booking go to the hotel site. We have found the price can be cheaper.

Have fun!!!

Stay near the quarter. You won't need a car.

When I go, I get a room within walking distance of the Quarter and leave my car at the hotel/motel. There are plenty of hotels/motels in a wide range of prices.
I can't quote you any since I haven't been in a while and the last time, someone else made the reservations for us.
