New to the Area - Need Child Care Advice

We are moving to Oak Park in July and researching the child care options. I will be working west of the Loop (Jackson and Racine) and my husband will be working at IIT.
I have a 3 year old and almost 1 year old and they are currently in a day care center - it seems to be working well for them socially and we like having them in the same location.
Of course, finding space for the 1 year old is difficult - centers I've talked to in Oak Park are either full or only take preschool age children. We're open to day care closer to work, but don't know where to begin. Likewise for in-home daycare or a nanny share.
Any and all ideas are welcome! Many thanks...K.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their advice! We decided to stay with center-based care, and found two great places. Building Blocks Child Care Center is close to home, and Rainforest Learning Center is close to work. Rainforest seems like a more enriching environment, but Building Blocks has availbility right away. So we'll start with the kids at Building Blocks and get on the wait list for Rainforest...

Welcome to Oak Park! It's really a wonderful community. But it is hard to find a center spot in or near Oak Park for a younger child. That's how we ended up using licensed home daycare. Some of the home daycares are closer to centers in size/staffing/enrichment options, and some are more like homes. The West Suburban Home Daycare Association can give you referrals if you're interested (they used to have a website, but all I can find offhand is this: ____@____.com or call ###-###-####.) Or email me if you aren't able to reach them and I can pull together some information for you on daycares that I know of.

There's also a daycare and schools referral guide for the area. Of course I can't find mine now that I'm looking for it, but I think the visitor's bureau might have some.

We are north of Oak Park, in Chicago. We take our daughter to a wonderful home day care that is really large for a home daycare but a little smaller than a center. I think they currently have 8 infants on the main floor and I don't know how may older kids (they switch at about 2). It is called Granny's Corner and it is on Natoma just north of North Ave. If you are going to be on the north side of Oak Park it will be very close.

Let me know if you would like any more information.

You can always go to www.naeyc.org and do a zip code search. This will populate a list of accredited day care facilities within your search parameters.

My daughter went to Rainforest from the time she was 3 months until she was almost three. We LOVE them. I'm glad you got into Building Blocks but if anything opens at Rainforest I HIGHLY recommend them.
