New Vacuum Needed

Our vacuum cleaner is about 10 years old and isn't working very well (it wasn't the best one out there to start with), so we need to invest in a new one. I've heard good things about Dyson and Oreck, but they are so pricey. Please let me know of specific vacuum brands and models that work well and of places to buy them that might be better on our tight budget! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Quick update...I'm still happy for more advice because I haven't yet purchased a new vacuum, but I appreciate greatly the information provided by all the Mamas! You all are wonderful. I now have some good ideas of what to get and where to get it!

I looked at the Dysons but just didnt want to shell out the bucks for it. I looked for MONTHS for a new vacuum and finally decided on the Bissell Total Floors vacuum I got from Kohls and I love it. Bagless, dirt tray comes out for easy dumping/cleaning, and the tool attachment extends out pretty far, great for vacuuming my stairs. Plus it works great on tile and hard floors too, so much easier than sweeping.

Hello,
I have an online subscription to Consumer Reports so I copied this info for you to hopefully help with your decision....I'm in the same need! Good luck!

Best uprights for most:

• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 , $300, CR Best Buy
• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 , $350

Both Kenmores are top performers. Also consider the lower-priced Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 if you're willing to accept less airflow, more noise, lower brand reliability for uprights, and--as with the Kenmore 36932--emptying a bin.
If less weight is worth some trade-offs:

• Riccar SupraLite RSL3 , $330
• Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 , $60
• Hoover WindTunnel Supreme U5458-900 , $130
• Hoover EmPower U5262-910 , $100

The 9-pound Riccar is lightest; also consider the Riccar Supralite RSL4 for its superb carpet cleaning. The Hoovers offer the most value and performance, and the Hoover EmPower folds, though there are more reliable upright brands.

I bought a Hoover Savy and it is absolutely great. You can get it at Walmart for about $125.00. It even has a pet hair attachment that works great.

I have the Premium Hoover self propelled Wind Tunnel. Mine has a bag and I prefer it over the bagless. Bought it at Sears, along with the Hoover carpet shampooer I love. Their private brand, Kenmore, might be comparable but not sure. Hoover might even make it for them. Anyway, the cleaning ladies said the one I have is the best of all the vacumns they use. Wouldn't have a vacumn without the self propelled.

My husband tells everyone that if he knew a Dyson would make his wife so happy, he would have gotten one years ago! It is totally worth the investment!
