Im due early January with a baby girl. I do have 2 older children 13 and 11 but for some reason I cant remember small things like how often I changed the baby clothes and things like that. Plus I was a teen mom so I had alot of help. Well 11 years has pass and I have an unexpected surprise Im trying to prepare for. I dont want to over do it or under do it on clothes. How often do you change your newborn clothes a day? Im having a c-section so I know I will not be doing laundry as often as I do now for a while.

It may seem to be a silly question to some but I just hate being unprepared.

I have all the major areas covered. Its just the small things that happens once the baby is actually here Im trying to prepare for.

What can I do next?

I had a little boy that was a serious wetter so we had a lot of changing and multiple washes (changed his crib 3 times one night!). Personally, I think under doing it is better than overdoing it. You can always enlist in the older kids to help with the washing. My son only lasted 2 weeks in newborn clothing (guess what he had most of?) and so picking up clothes along the way was actually easier and more cost effective because I knew how much I needed by then.

So for a real number, I would have at LEAST 3-4 for the day. You have day clothes, 2 extras for accidents, and pajamas. We also lived in the onesies and sleepers the first few months. I cried when I couldn't fit him in the zippered pajamas, so much easier than all those damn snaps in the middle of the night.

I have a six week old and she goes through two outfits a day at the most. (somedays she doesnt mess her outfit at all) Either from spitting or from going through her diaper onto clothes. And then I change her into pajamas when we are getting ready for bed. I agree about using the bibs to avoid having to go through more outfits.

Congratulations on your sweet new addition.

Get yourself some adorable little bibs and use them religiously...so much easier to change the bib than to change the entire outfit!! Start now, checking out used clothing stores, garage sales, etc...they grow SO quickly...I wouldnt get too much newborn size until you know how big that little one is going to be. I have BIG babies....9lb 4oz, 9lb 7 oz and 9lb 12 oz...needless to say I NEVER used newborn clothing!!! If you do buy any newborn clothes, leave them in the package, with the sales receipt until after the baby is born...then if she is small enough...have Grandma do a quick load of wash before you come home!!!
I, personally, used lots and lots of sleeping sacs, onesies, that type of thing for my girls until they were 3 months or so. So much easier to change, and more comfortable for them since they are (hopefully) sleeping most of the time anyway!!!
Congratulations on your new little surprise package!!!

When mine was a newborn, we changed clothes at least 4-6 times a day depending on how much she spit up (she had a knack for spitting up as soon as you thought you were safe!). I didn't change her outfit everytime she spit up, only when it was alot or started to smell. Then there are the diaper blow outs!! Yep, I would be prepared for lots of outfit changes those first 3 months.

Use the smell test. WIth my son it was 1 to 3 outfits in a 24 hour period. If the inside of your house is warm, stock up on receiving blankets...just keep him in a diaper and the blankets, he will be fine. A onsie if you cannot stand it will help too. They are inexpensive, and come in 5 packs.

Personally, I liked the gowns with the elastic in the bottom, but they are a little more expensive...perhaps something to use at night.

Unless there was a major throw-up, I only changed his clothes for diaper disasters - which were about 3X/day. He was born at 7.15 lbs. and I needed the newborn size for about 6 weeks.

Have you been to Once Upon a Child? It's awesome for gently used clothes (they grow out of them so fast!)

My kids were/are all spitters! Our youngest is 6 weeks today. I only change his outfit once per day........ I put him in something clean in the morning (if it's a sleeper, then I leave him in it till the next morning.) And then at night, put him in pj's........ I just keep a bib on him or a spit up towel near so his clothes stay clean. I haven't had to change a single outfit yet for a diaper blow-out for him...... If you have them in the right size diaper, it's not till they start eating solids that the blow-outs tend to happen.

He was 6# 12 oz. when born and dropped to 6#4oz. He wore a newborn size diaper for about 2 1/2 weeks. He is now over 10# and wears a size 1. We like LUVS the best. He was about 8# when we switched to size 1 diapers. Our first was 7# 14oz when born and we didn't even get to finish one pack of newborns because she was leaking since they were getting too small. I WOULD NOT PURCHASE MORE THAN 1 PACK OF NEWBORN DIAPERS TILL AFTER YOUR BABY IS BORN AND YOU KNOW THE WEIGHT!

It was like 3 times a day for my daughter, she spit up all the time! My son, who is now almost 2 weeks old, has not spit up once. Depends on the baby I guess!! I know that doesn't help much...I would say to play it by ear! You may be able to save on clothes if he or she doesn't dirty that many.

I only changed my babies clothes when they were dirty, after a bath, before bedtime and first thing in the morning. My estimate would be 3-5 outfits in a 24 hour period, depending on if your baby is a big spitter-upper.

Rough estimate, about 2-3x a day.

I second the going and checking out the gently used kids clothes places...here we have quite a few "once upon a child", " other mothers"...

Congrats on the new baby!

You didn't ask but I'm writing to suggest that you enlist your older children as helpers, especially in the regular maintenance-grunt work in the first few weeks. They're old enough and will probably appreciate the opportunity to help you w/their new little sister. Explain/demonstrate some of the jobs you will need done before you have the baby.

I don't know how many of anything you will need.
And remember you don't want to get too much newborn size stuff.
They outgrow the smallest size almost immediately.

Wishing you a healthy happy baby
and loving helpful big kids.

Usually only once a day, but I would keep a soft bib on a lot of the time that I could change if it got spit up on too much.
