Newborn Diapers - Philadelphia,PA

This seems like a stupid question, especially since this is my second baby, but are newborn size diapers necessary? We cloth diapered and with my first son he was born in the hospital so we used whatever they gave us until the meconium stopped. I don't want to ruin my cloth diapers so I'm going to use disposables with our second child for the first couple of days as well, but this time I'm giving birth at a birth center and we will only be there for 12 hours at the most (and I don't know that they even provide any diapers). My son was 7 1/2 lbs when he was born. The newborn size goes to 10 lbs and size 1 start at 8 lbs. Could a size 1 work on a 7-8 lb baby or should I get a back of newborn ones just in case? I just don't want to be left with extra diapers or have ones that are too small from the start if she turns out to be a 10 lb baby.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I'll get a pack of each and then just open the one I want to use and return the other one. I also didn't realize that the newborn ones had a cut out for the cord, so if she'll fit into newborns I think we'll just go with those.

Never bought newborn diapers....ever.

Baby 1: 8# 12oz
Baby 2: 10# 4oz
Baby 3: 8# 4oz
Baby 4: 10# 12oz (almost 11#)

All 4 of my kids were born at home and we started them all in size 1. The mec passed within minutes of being born....so they destroyed the cheap receiving blanket they were wrapped in - oh well.

My daughter is 8 1/2 weeks old and is still in newborn diapers (we prefer the huggies as they fit her better than pampers). I've tried size 1 and she still leaks through the leg holes. She was 7 lb 14 oz at birth and has been growing like crazy. Hoping she'll graduate soon! Depending on your baby you might be able to get away with size 1, but I'd go with newborn if your planning on going to cloth within a few weeks.

I would get a pack of newborns. You aren't using them long and might as well get a more snug fit. My DD was 8 lbs and so narrow that she wore newborns for the first few weeks.

If you end up with diapers you don't need, consider donating to a women's shelter.

I would go with the newborn size. Your first was 7 1/2 lbs so the chance of you suddenly having a 10 lb baby is kind of slim unless of course it is a different father? The newborn diapers look sooooo tiny until you put them on a newborn and then they look big!

I'd get a small pack of each size. Our kids were both around 9 lbs. and we used the newborn size maybe a week, then moved on to the size 1s. The only advantage to the newborn size is that there is a cutout for the cord stump.

I've never had problems washing meconium out of my cloth diapers. It looks bad, but it's gone in one wash, and any staining suns out quickly. I love my Kissaluvs size 0! They've been through two babies and they're still in very good condition for resale.

Plus, when we used sposies on my first in the early days we had so many poop blowouts that we were doing just as much laundry with sposies as we would with cloth. They were a total waste.

At both hospitals I was at with my son, they only provided size 1 diapers. He was 7 lbs on the dot and they were a little large, but worked just fine.

It alll depends on the baby, I would buy 1 small pack a few days before birth, keep the package sealed, and keep the recipt so you can exchange them for another size if need be. My son only wore newborn diapers for 3 days after birth (he was nearly 8 lbs at birth) but my daughter who was born at just nearly 7 lbs left the hospital at 5lbs 9oz (she had severe reflux issues and lost a lot of weight before we were able to get her to eat well) was in newborn diapers for 4 weeks after birth so you can never tell.

Not really, if you're talking about stocking up and if they are needed then you can buy them as needed until they aren't. My son was a little more than 5lbs when we brought him home and I needed NB diapers for a couple of weeks but was able to use some size 1s after a pack of NB ran out and his cord had fallen off, but I needed size 1 for MUCH longer. I might buy a pack of newborn if that's all you're going to use, but babies in general grow out of NB very quickly.

It is hard to predict sizes of babies.. mine went from 6 lbs 14 oz, to 7.7 then to 6.7. I had to use NB on my first and last b/c they were too tiny for a size 1. Actually I had to use NB on my third until she was 3 months old b/c she was so tiny and wouldn't put on weight. She is still a tiny peanut and at 15 mos she could wear a 2 if I wanted/needed too.

I thought the newborns were better. My 1st was 9 lbs so I bought size 1, but with those skinny newborn baby legs I had constant leaks. I learned my lesson, and used newborns for the first month or so with my 2nd - and he was born at 8 lbs and gained fast, and they were fine.

It is hard to say, my daughter was early by a few weeks and was 7.7lbs and in the Nicu, lost weight and had a hard time gaining. she was in newborn for a while. then I switched to cloth. But like you I used sposies when my son was born. I had a pack of newborns for him and he was 10 lbs at birth, had already gained weight before we left the hospital, but I still managed to use most of the pack of newborn on him. Size 1 would have been better for his size, but the newborns were okay. that is my experience. Hope it helps.

I thought newborn diapers were for small babies. My girls were 5.5 and 6.4 pounds and we used newborns for them as the size 1 was too big.
