Is a 5 pound weight gain in less than 2 months ok for a newborn? Baby was born 9lbs 2oz; doc weighed him at 14 lbs at his 2 month checkup.

What can I do next?

My son was 9lbs 8oz 21in at birth - at 2.5 mths was 14lbs 9oz 26in - at 4mths is 19lbs 14oz 28in. My Pedi said they are suppose to double their weight by 5-6 mths and triple by year. I am bf...he was off the charts with his height and in 95% with weight...LOL My Pedi is fine with it because he was big to begin with and is nice & healthy! No worries!

Babies are supposed to double their weight in the first 6 months and triple their birth weight at one year.

Babies grow really fast in the beginning and then they slow down..

He is normal.. my son was a chunker at that age but one he started walking he go so skinny..

My son was 9lbs 1oz at birth and gained weight rapidly. He was 12lbs at 2 months and 15lbs at 3 months. He was just a big boy and he loved to eat!

He's now 2 1/2 and he's a shrimp!! He's 26lbs soaking wet :)

Both of my boys gained weight very rapidly the first year of life.. they were always off the charts, but very healthy. They are now still very healthy and normal in size. No worries.

Hi C..
Both of my kids gained between 4 and 5 pounds in the first two months and at 4 and 2, they are on the smaller side.

Do not worry about it. My daughter was a 10lb 2oz baby and by the time she was 2 months had totally outgrown her bassinette. As long as the peditrician is happy with it, don't fret about it. Bigger babies are going to have higher weight gain numbers just because they started out bigger. According to the charts they are supposed to double their weight by 6 months. You will see a slow down in the weight gian around the 6-9 month mark.

If the baby is being breastfed, is happy and fairly content, a 5 pound weight gain sounds great. Keep up the good work.

Sounds fine to me, my daughter wasn't that much of a weight gain (9#14oz at birth, I think 13#8oz at 2 month) but she has always been in the 80-95th percentile for weight and 95th-100th percentile for height, so I am used to seeing unusually high numbers, and there has never been any concern from the doctor.

I would just be glad you have a healthy child. :-) A friend of mine has a 7 month old that only weighs 12 pounds, he just won't gain weight, the poor thing.

Well, it depends. Is he bottlefed or breastfed? It's nearly impossible to overfeed a breastfed baby but it is easy with one who is bottlefed (either breastmilk or formula). Just be sure you (and his other caregivers) are not confusing other signals for his hunger cues and he should be fine. Also, take a look at what you and your son's father weighed at birth if possible. If you were both on the chunky side chances are he's just keeping up tradition!

That sounds typical. My sons gained quickly, and weighed 24lbs by the time they were 6-7 months old. Then they maintained that weight for a very long time as they got moving and thinned out. Your baby sounds healthy!

My first son was born at 8 lbs and at his 2 month he was 15 lbs 8 oz. At almost 6 years, he is now 64 lbs and 4'3" tall. He sounds heavy, but he is really a twig, just thick twig. I call him my little linebacker. He is in size 7 pants that have to have the elastic pulled in to the 4th button. The doctor is guessing he'll be over 6'5" as an adult. I was always told that as long as they are in the same category for both height and weight, they are fine. For example, mine was always over the 100th percentile for both height and weight. My second son is not as big, but is still in the 75th for weight and the 95th for height. I may be biased, but I like big babies!

C.,

Yes, it is ok for your baby to gain 5 lbs in less than 2 months. It means that he is getting enough calories everyday. His weight gain will be steady and may even slow down in the next couple of months. J.

Wow you have a big healthy boy! As long as he's happy, eats, poops and has lots of wet diapers he sounds good to go. All babies are different and don't have to stay on the charts every month. He may have some months that he gains alot and some none at all. My first only weighed 5.5 at birth (2 weeks early) and at a year weighed 16# and is still petite. #2 weighed 6.12 at birth and at 10 weeks she was 16.4 she is normal now. Congrats!
