Night Potty Training

When my daughter was 30 months I trained her to go potty. We would make a big deal when we heard it hit the water and she would just beam - this was long after the peanut m&m's were gone. If I was going out, I would tell her if she wanted to come along she would have to go potty first.

We kept her in her pretty panties and put her to bed the first day she'd gone without an accident - which was the first day she was trained - and she was fine overnight. Now I know all kids are different, but she's never had an accident in bed. She has had accidents when she would get too busy playing with other kids to get to the potty in time.

Hope this helps. I'd put a waterproof cover on the mattress (they have plastic ones you can zip around the entire mattress) and give it a shot. J.

If she's okay at home in the daytime, it should be fine to go out. Just make sure to carry a spare pair of everything for a little while and remind her to go when you are near bathrooms.

For nighttime, the following worked for us, a few months after my daughter had been successful all day during the day, we would wake her up to go potty right before we went to bed. Then put a little potty by her bed. If I woke up in the night, I would get her up again to potty. After a few days, she would get herself up to potty and not long after that she stopped needing to get up and started sleeping through the night dry.

I don't know how to potty train at night either. Could you put a pull-up on her and take her potty before bed and then just see if she wets the pull up? If she doesn't, then maybe just try it with nothing one night. A friend of mine has a little boy and when he potty trained in the day he just automatically was trained at night too! It was awesome! He had maybe a handful of accidents over a year or so and that's it! My oldest son has a lot of trouble with wetting the bed so he sleeps in a pull-up.

Oh and if your youngest is showing signs of being interested in the potty then go for it! But if not, I think 14 months is really early, just let her take her time. My little one loves to go potty on the big potty like his daddy and big brother. Let her watch you and her sister and she'll probably start doing it on her own or asking you to take her.

We did the pull ups and made them go before they went to bed and then would take them before we went to bed, they were usually sleeping, but would go. After the accidents start decreasing try the training pants, they are cloth but more absorbant than regular underwear. I also let then know if they had accidents at night it was ok, because sometimes our bodies don't arent always able to wake us up when we have to go.

We've just started this process ourselves, so no advice, but I'll share what we are trying. We have extra clothes with us at all times. We take frequent potty breaks - my husband or I will go too, so he sees it's a "cool" thing to do. We try not to make him self conscious about the whole thing, but state matter of factly we all make mistakes, but isn't it wonderful when we do well? No more accidents during the day as a result. Night-time we wear pull ups over our undees just in case and go before bed and no juice an hour or so beforehand too. Good luck!

It sounds like she is ready to go out in public. Just bring extra undies and pants :). Our daughter stayed in diapers at night until about 3 years 4 months and once she woke up 5 days in a row with a dry diaper we told her that it was time to give them up. She was so excited and has only had 1 accident at night so far.

I just potty trained my third child and I have always found that it's best to just bite the bullet and take them out without a diaper on. I think the consistency is important. Yes, they may have accidents out so be prepared with extra clothes. I recently bought a travel toilet for the car since we are in it all day and it's been great. We use it at least once a day.

As for night time, I know several people who do wake the child up and take them to the bathroom but honestly, I've always felt it was unnecessary. I have always left a diaper on at night time until they are consistently waking up with a dry diaper. I think when they are little they just don't wake up naturally when they have to go and it stinks changing sheets in the middle of the night!

At 14 months he/she may not be physically ready but if he/she is interested go for it. My oldest started around 18 months but it was a long process for him since physically I don't think he was ready.

If she is potty trained at home she should be ready to go out in the public. Make sure she goes before you leave home and
while out take her to the bathroom. You might want to limit what she is drinking the first time out. Yes, start training your 14 month old. I had my 4th child potty trained at 17 mos. old it took two days at home and we were ready to go. I always used m&m candies for a reward if they went. Only a couple at a time but it does the trick.
