Hello there ladies....I am wondering how you go about night time potty training. My daughter is two and a half she will be 3 in October, and she has been potty trained since about March. For the past two nights, she has been pulling her pull up off, sometime I guess in the middle of the night, and I wake up to a wet bed..Yesterday I told her it was ok, accidents happen but today I was a little upset, I told her that if she has to go to the potty during night night time, to come get mommy ro daddy and we will take her, but I don't think she understands that. So my question is, how do you get your kiddos potty trained a night?? Thanks for all your help in advance....

What can I do next?

If you have a little potty-training chair, put it next to her bed so she doesn't have to go so far. Just until she gets a little older. If she gets up to take the pull-up off, maybe she'll sit down and potty. Just an idea.

When I potty trained my 2 year old I never put her in pull ups so you might want to let her pick out her favorite panties and have her wear them at night. My daughter loves Diego so we went out and bought boys underwear for her to wear. We told her not to pee or poop on Diego because he did not like that and she never did. It is worth a try. Also give her a couple of nights she will probably pee in bed, but soon she will realize she needs to get up and go potty. Try not to give her anything to drink at least one hour before she goes to bed.

i went out and got two water proof mattress covers and got one of the flat mattress sheets thats water proof I cut that one in half so I had two of them. My kids dont drink after 700 and they get woken up at least once during the night! I have also gotten thicker towels to go underneth them and they wear their underware and panties only! It has helped alot!

Hey there. I have a 3 year old daughter and she was a tough one to potty train. It took a little while for her to get the hang of things. She use to wear pull ups and I think with pull ups they get confused on when they are really wet. I took my daughter to the store and let her pick out her own big girl panties and told her if she peas in them you have to throw them away just like she does with the pull ups. but you just wash the ones she pea's in. She wet her self a little bit but she new that she did after wards. At night time I dont let her go to bed with a sippy cup at all. When they drink alot of juice or water they need to go pea more. So through out the day she can have a sippy cup. When its nap time no drink take a sip of water and time for bed. She doesnt wet her bed at night. When its bed time same thing No sippy cup and after dinner she is cut off to drinks. She can have a drink here or there if she is thirsty and i ask her do you need to go potty. Now she can just get up and go by her self. Good luck. Some can be easy and some are just not fully ready. Good luck try it out for a little bit and see how it works.

If she is pulling them off at night, they maybe starting to feel uncomfortable to her. Have you started letting her wear panties yet? If so, tell her she can wear her panties to bed, only if she promise to keep them dry. I would also limit water after a certain hour, or only give her a few sips before she go to bed.

I am going through the night time pt right now too! I have a three year old and a four year old that are training at the same time. I cut off liquids at 6 p.m. and then get up at 2 am and take them potty. we're going on a month now and they are doing well.Last night was the first night I did not get up with them at 2 am and one was dry the other wasn't. It takes a lot of time and patience and washing but we're getting there!

We do no liquids after 6p (I encourage a lot of drinking during the day) and I wake him up usually 1.5-2 hours after falling asleep (which is way before I go to bed, he's asleep by 8p). Going on 3 weeks or so and the accidents are becoming fewer and farther in between.

Chances are she doesn't understand so I woudlnt' push it personally. She's very young and, while it's great that she has the day time potty down, she's probably too young to go all night without an accident.

Night potty "training" has nothing to do with training but is a physical developmental milestone. The ability to hold it over night comes from the release of a hormone in the child's body. It happens at some point in a child's development typically before the age of 5. You can google this to learn more. Most peds won't even consider it an issue until after the child is 6.

Rather than drive yourself nuts with waking up the child (and messing with everyone's sleep) and possibly putting her though some unneeded shame, put her in a pull up or diaper and call it a day. When she gets to the point where she can go several weeks (even a month) with a dry morning diaper, then you can try going without to see what happens. Accidents will happen along the way, so take heart.

Hi A.,

I'm not sure what to tell you about her taking off her pull-up at night but I think it's very rare for a child that young to be completely potty trained during the night. You may have noticed from the many other posts on this site about PT that it can take several years after daytime training for nighttime dryness to be 100% complete. Honestly, if it were me, I'd probably get really firm about not taking off the pull-up. Other than that, all you can do is just keep changing sheets. Even if you go to regular underwear, you'll still have the same problem, just worse because then her clothes will be soaked as well. I know how desperate you can feel to get this fixed but again, she's still really young to have that kind of nighttime consistency. But I do feel your pain, I'm potty training my just turned three year old boys, they are in underwear all day and then a diaper for nighttime. They do pull ups at nap time and more often than not wake up dry - but definitely not nightime till morning. Anyway, good luck!

I agree with DR. My daughter would cry when I'd make her wear pull ups to bed because they made her feel like a baby. My coworker told me to just not make her wear them anymore. I put her in panties to sleep all night. I got Dora panties and we talked about not peeing on Dora because it would make her sad. I put a couple of thick towels under her and let her be. She did very well. There were accidents occasionally. However, the towels might keep the pee-pee from soaking the sheets. You've got to trust her and I know that's hard but it's worth a try! Good Luck!
